For the upcoming school year, Mira Costa High School offers students a wide variety of educational travel experiences. These trips aim to broaden students’ global views and provide meaningful learning chances outside the classroom. Organized by school departments, these trips take place throughout the year and are supported by academic teachers and extracurricular programs.
Spring Break in Japan
Scheduled from April 4 to 11, 2026, this trip is led by Spanish teacher Nancy Geczi, who has offered international student programs since the early 1990s. The detailed plan covers Tokyo, Kyoto, Kamakura, Nara, and Osaka. Students will deeply experience Japanese culture by learning about local traditions. Geczi points out the importance of experiencing a new culture using all five senses. There are only 20 places left for this trip. Students who are interested should go to Room 72 to get registration brochures.
Model United Nations (MUN)
Under the guidance of Annie Choi, the MUN program continues its tradition of competitive travel. While the exact destinations for the coming year are being decided, common places for delegates include Washington D. C., New York, and many other international cities. These experiences help students move beyond their comfort zones and greatly improve their ability to speak in public.
Winter Eco-Adventure in Central America
Happening from December 27 to January 4, this trip to Panama and Costa Rica is led by math teacher Nick Scheftic. It combines natural eco-sights with physical activities, such as swimming in the sea, surfing, and climbing through the rainforest. Importantly, students on this trip have a special chance to get both high school and college credits.
Students who want to take part in these global trips are encouraged to attend information meetings and plan early, because many students are interested and the number of places is limited.

I was standing in line at the grocery store, scrolling through my phone, impatient to get home after a long day of teaching. Ahead of me stood an elderly man in a faded grey coat. His hands trembled slightly as he counted out coins onto the counter.
“I’m sorry,” he whispered to the cashier, his voice thin and shaky. “I thought I had enough.”
The cashier, a young woman who looked equally tired, sighed. “You’re short by five dollars, sir. Do you want to put something back ”
People behind me became impatient. The old man looked at his things: a carton of milk, a loaf of bread, a dozen eggs, and a small box of chocolate cookies. He slowly reached for the cookies. “I... I don’t need these. They were for my grandson, but...”
I could see how embarrassed he was. Without thinking twice, I walked forward and paid with my card. “I’ll pay for it,” I said. “Please keep the cookies.”
The man froze. He looked at me, his watery blue eyes wide with shock. “No, Miss, I couldn’t...”
“It’s fine,” I smiled, hoping to ease his worry. “Consider it a gift for your grandson.”
He tried to speak but choked up. He simply nodded, took his bag, and waited for me outside. When I walked out, he grabbed my hand. “You don’t know what this means. My pension (养老金) hasn’t arrived yet, and tomorrow is his birthday. Thank you.”
A week later, I was back at the same store. As I walked down the passage, a little boy ran up to me, holding a familiar box of chocolate cookies. Behind him was the old man, smiling happily. “He wanted to share one with you,” the man said.
That chocolate cookie tasted better than any fancy dessert I’d ever had. It tasted like connection. It tasted like hope.

You can’t help waking up your teenagers for fear of them wasting their day, but allowing them to sleep longer on weekends may actually be of benefit to their mental health. This is the conclusion of a study by researchers at the University of Oregon and the State University of New York Upstate Medical University, which found that young people aged 16-24 who caught up on lost sleep during the weekend had a significantly lower risk of being depressive.
In the study, participants reported their usual bedtimes and wake-up times on both weekdays and weekends, allowing researchers to work out their “weekend catch-up sleep” — the difference between average weekend sleep and weekday sleep. Each subject was also asked about their emotional well-being. Researchers found teenagers and young adults who made up for lost sleep on weekends showed a lower risk of being depressive.
The scientists recommend that teenagers get between 8 and 10 hours of sleep every night, but agree that perfect sleep schedules are often unrealistic for teens considering school, homework, extracurricular activities, social lives and — for many — part-time jobs. Biology plays a major role in the problem of lack of sleep among teenagers. During the teenage years, circadian rhythms — the body’s internal clock — move later, making it harder for teens to fall asleep early. “Instead of getting up early in the morning, you’re going to become more of a night owl,” Casement, the lead author of the study, explained. “And sleep onset keeps holding over until age 18 to 20. After that, you will get up early as usual again.”
“Depression is one of the leading causes of disability among people aged 16 to 24,” Casement noted. In this context, disability refers broadly to damaged daily functioning, including difficulty in attending school or work, frequent absences or lateness. “It makes that age range of particular interest in trying to understand risk factors for being depressive and how those might relate to delivery of interventions (干预措施),” Casement added.
8. How did the researchers measure “weekend catch-up sleep”
A.By emotional asking.
B.By direct comparison.
C.By habit observation.
D.By time management.
9. What prevents teenagers from getting enough sleep on weekdays
A.Lack of awareness.
B.Early parent waking.
C.Late night preference.
D.Body clock change.
10. What can we learn from Casement’s opinion from the last paragraph
A.Body clock worsens depression.
B.Depression is common in young adults.
C.Young depression needs targeted help.
D.Weekend sleep cures depression.
11. Which of the following is the best title for the text
A.Sleep Loss: A Hidden Risk for Teenagers
B.Tough Choice: Studying or Weekend Sleep
C.Body Clock: Teen Sleep Patterns Explained
D.Weekend Sleep: A Benefit for Mental Health

As the world’s need for electronics grows ever bigger, the other side of the coin — e-waste — is raising alarms. Most of the e-waste was sent to landfills or burned, with possible negative influences on the environment and human health. There’s also an amazing economic loss, as $ 62 billion-worth of recoverable resources are lost.
With e-waste rising five times faster than recycling rates, new solutions to the problem can’t come soon enough. Aquafade could be one — a fully water-dissolving plastic (可溶于水的塑料) that dissolves completely in about six hours when placed in water. It could be used to pack electronics and dissolved when the electronic is no longer wanted, making it easier to recycle the most valuable parts and reducing the amount of e-waste. “For most electronic products, when they’re being recycled, it’s the disassembly (拆卸) that’s the real trouble, and really needs a large amount of human resources,” said Samuel Wangsaputra, one of the inventors of Aquafade.
“One night I was doing the dishes, and I was looking at a dishwasher bag,” Wangsaputra said, attracted by the water-dissolving film. “And I thought, where does the film go So I tried one, just in water, and it fully disappeared.” And now Wangsaputra has found a material called Aquafade. It is only applied to the outer shell, making the product water resistant (有抵抗力的) up to five meters for 30 minutes. “But once you take off just one part from the product and you put it in water. Five to six hours later, it will dilute, and what’s left is milky water and the most valuable parts of the electronics,” said Wangsaputra.
The first commercial application for Aquafade is likely to be as the casing for LED wristbands worn at concerts. While they are currently more focused on single-use electronics, they would eventually like to see Aquafade shells used on all kinds of devices. For now, Aquafade is double the cost of regular plastics, but Wangsaputra said wholesale production will make it cheaper.
12. What does the author mainly discuss in the first paragraph
A.The new solution to e-waste.
B.The recycling process of electronics.
C.Different types of plastics.
D.The economic loss caused by e-waste.
13. What does Aquafade help save in the recycling process of electronics
A.The labor.
B.The cost.
C.The time.
D.The material.
14. What does the underlined word “dilute” in paragraph 3 probably mean
A.Spread out.
B.Break down.
C.Hold off.
D.Mix up.
15. What is Samuel Wangsaputra’s attitude toward the future of Aquafade
A.Doubtful.
B.Cautious.
C.Positive.
D.Hopeless.

I work in a foreign capital company. Although the company is a little far from my home, I have my own car, so I drive myself to and from work every day. Tom is my good colleague. Sometimes we work overtime in the company and get off work together. He often goes home by bus.
One day, it was cold outside. It seemed that a snowstorm would be coming. As usual, Tom and I worked overtime in the company. After finishing the work, we were ready to go home together. Tom went to wait for the bus, and I went to drive, but today it snowed harder and harder, and the bus stopped. So I was going to give Tom a lift.
I was heading home after giving Tom a lift. I took a shortcut to get home early as the snowstorm was coming.
Then the snowstorm started and was coming down fast, within minutes I was in a white out. The windows were frozen and getting covered with snow, so I slowed down and rolled down my driver’s side window, thinking I could better follow the road edge and keep to a straight line. But really, I had no clue where I was. I was confused and didn’t know what to do.
At that time, I stopped and kept the car running to stay warm. I took a deep breath and was deep in thought. Later I called 911 and asked them for help. However, the operator told me that the weather was too bad to do me a favor and asked me to wait things out for the night.
The call left me in panic. “Breathe,” I told myself. Tom knew what happened to me. Suddenly, an idea occurred to him. “Maybe you could ask for help online and there must be some people living nearby your location and they can show you the right direction,” he told me on the phone.

Dear Chris,
I’m glad you’re curious about Chinese festival customs.
Take the Spring Festival for example. Instead of visiting relatives door to door, many people send online greetings now.
This change mainly comes from fast Internet development and busy daily work. It saves time and keeps contact.
In my opinion, new ways don’t kill traditions. We can enjoy both convenience and festival warmth.
Yours,
Li Hua
