Experience Picasso’s Works in a New Way
Pablo Picasso was fascinated by performers and their ability to transform. He was inspired by the dancers, entertainers and bullfighters he painted. To mark the 100th anniversary of his famous painting The Three Dancers, this exhibition, Theatre Picasso, staged by celebrated contemporary artist Wu Tsang and author Enrique Fuenteblanca, casts new light on Picasso’s work. They will transform the exhibition space into a theatre for displaying over 45 works by Picasso. This includes paintings, sculpture and works on paper.

When Alex Lin was 11 years old, he read an alarming article in the newspaper about electronic trash, known as e-waste. The article said that people were burying old computers in backyards, throwing TVs into streams, and throwing cell phones in the garbage. This was dangerous, because e-waste contains poisonous chemicals, which can leak into the environment, getting into crops, animals, water supplies — and people.
Alex showed the article to his friends. They spent several weeks gathering information about the chemicals in e-waste and their effects on humans. They researched how to handle e-waste properly and how it could be recycled. Then, they advertised in the local newspaper, asked residents to bring their unwanted electronics to an e-waste drop-off center they set up for the town and found a responsible company to recycle the waste.
After setting up the center, Alex’s team began to think about how to reuse some of the old computers. “If we could restore computers ourselves and distribute them to students who didn’t have their own, we could help students in our area and protect the environment at the same time,” Alex says. He persuaded his school to start teaching students how to restore donated computers. Alex is especially proud of this part of his project. He was even thanked on video by the mother of one of the students who got a free computer.
Since e-waste is a global problem, Alex and his friends are spreading their project internationally. In 2007, they shipped a fully restored media center to a school in Mexico City. During the spring break, they visited the school and helped educate the students about e-waste. They have also shipped two restored media centers to Africa — one to an Internet cafe in Cameroon and one to a cultural center in Nigeria.
Because of the work of people like Alex and his team, more and more people are getting the message about safely handling e-waste. As Alex says, “Today’s technology should not become tomorrow’s harmful trash.”

A long face is not the only sign that someone is down. A recent study found how people walk is revealing too, particularly the swing of the arms and legs.
“Walking is one of the most familiar and well-practiced whole-body movements for humans,” said Mina Wakabayashi, the lead author of the study. “Because of this, changes in emotional state may naturally appear in the way we walk. In our results, movements with larger arm and leg swings were more likely to be perceived as angry, whereas movements with smaller swings were more likely to be perceived as sad or fearful.”
During the research, the scientists asked actors to recall life events that caused anger, happiness, fear or sadness and then walk a short distance while keeping each memory in mind. The participants wore tight clothing and reflective markers, allowing the researchers to create point-light videos from the side and front which captured their way of walking without their facial expressions and other bodily cues. Volunteers then watched the videos and declared what emotion each pace brought. They recognized all of the portrayed emotions better than chance. “To some degree, the walkers’ intended emotions were indeed perceived by the observers,” the researchers wrote in Royal Society Open Science.
A second experiment tried to determine specific movements that gave away the walkers’ emotions. To do this, the researchers took walking videos from people without extreme emotions and edited the videos to increase or reduce the arm and leg swinging. Again, the observers saw more pronounced swinging as angry, with less seen as sad or fearful.
Emotions are likely to influence all manner of other ways in which people move their bodies, and researchers hope to explore these in future work. “Being able to infer emotions from body movement may help us understand others quickly during social interactions, even without words,” Wakabayashi said. That could mean spotting people’s emotions from afar and changing how we approach them, depending on whether they seem angry or sad.

Exercise is beneficial to our health in many ways, but it’s not that effective when it comes to losing weight. Now we have the best evidence explaining why this is. People who start to exercise more burn extra calories. However, the actual weight they lose is far less than the amount expected given the extra calories burned.
An analysis of 14 trials has found that our bodies burn less energy for other functions to make up for the calories used during exercise. This effect becomes even stronger when people both eat less and exercise more — and in some cases, it can completely neutralize the extra energy spent exercising. That means dieting alone leads to weight loss, but adding exercise may not help lose any more weight.
Herma Pontzer at Duke University says pairing exercise with diet makes the body compensate (补偿) more: “It’s still good for you, just not for weight loss.” When he studied Hadza hunter-gatherers in Tanzania, he was amazed they used no more total energy than desk workers. This discovery led Pontzer to propose, in 2015, that our bodies have developed to limit how much energy we burn, and compensate for greater physical activity by saving energy in other ways.
Exercise type matters pensation only occurs with aerobic exercises (有氧运动) like running. With weightlifting, energy use went up more than expected — for example, those consuming 200 extra kilocalories lifting weights saw a 250-kilocalorie rise in total consumption. Pontzer says measuring weightlifting energy use is hard, so findings need to be treated with caution (谨慎), but he guesses extra energy goes to muscle repair and building.
While Pontzer sees the findings as very clear evidence of compensation, others are still not convinced. Dylan Thompson notes study limitations, such as extra exercise replacing daily activities like gardening. He and Javier Gonzalez, another professor, at the University of Bath agree more studies are needed. “We really need carefully designed randomized controlled trials in humans,” Thompson said.
