Hody Childress , a farmer from Geraldine, Alabama, lived the last 10 years of his life with a little secret.
In the small town where he lived his entire life, Childress wanted to help his community. He knew there were families in his hometown that were struggling financially. So one day he pulled his local pharmacist (药剂师), Brooke Walker, to the side and asked, “Do you ever meet anybody who can’t pay for their medicine ” “Well, yeah, unfortunately , that happens a good bit,” Walker said. So Childress donated $100 to the local pharmacy for anyone who couldn’t afford to pay for medicine and said to Walker, “Next time that happens, you can use this. Don’t tell them where it came from, and don’t tell me who needed it.”
This act of generosity continued for nearly 10 years, up until his death in January 2023. And his story only came to light at his funeral, when his daughter, Tania Nix, wanted to show what kind of man her father was.
In fact, the 80-year-old only revealed his generosity to his daughter when he was unable to get to the pharmacy himself. He asked his daughter to take a $100 bill to the drugstore on the first day of the month. Nix continued to drop off the money to the pharmacy and didn’t tell anybody about what her dad was doing.
With her brother Doug, Nix shared, “It’s really hard for us to decide whether to allow this story out to the public, but I feel like a small deed (行为) can turn into a big deed—or it can turn into something that gives people hope. If it can encourage anyone to be a better person and want to help others, it’s worth it.”
According to the BBC, since the story was first published by the Washington Post, the pharmacy has received donations from all over the country.

By 2050, London’s weather could resemble that of Barcelona, with long stretches of summer drought. These ancient trees were not designed to thrive in such conditions. Around the world, millions of creatures facing unprecedented temperatures and habitat loss are on the move.
We do not tend to think of trees as migratory: they are slow-growing and rooted to the ground. Faced with this problem, the ecologist Charlie Gardner is one of a growing number proposing a radical, controversial solution: we help the trees on their march. Some scientists advocate moving individual species hundreds of kilometres north, within the country and from abroad. Others say entire ecosystems should be translocated, moving multiple species at once.
The “assisted migration” is divisive. Conservationists have long argued against introducing non-native species. They have concerns about unintended consequences of assisted migration. “Large-scale moving of ecosystems can’t be undone (撤销), so should be very much a last choice,” said Andrew Allen from the Woodland Trust. Allen believes we should prioritise helping native trees adapt to changes by encouraging natural regeneration, expanding and connecting existing woodlands.
But others say those arguments fail to deal with speed or size of change caused by the climate crisis. “Earlier in my career the narrative was all about restoring past baselines, and then, as I got more independent in my research, I realised that’s impossible. We are changing the climate so much, so we have to be a little more inventive. When we have examples of assisted migration, it’s often with species which are absolutely on the edge of extinction and have run out of other options,” said Sarah Dalrymple, a conservation ecologist from Liverpool University, who is part of the task force. She wants to see assisted migration explored earlier, working with species before their populations become so small. “You can never get rid of all the risks, but there is also risk in inaction,” she said. “The risk of inaction is increasing every day.”

Mahjong has been a very popular game in China, but the rules of this game differ from places to places. In Chengdu-Chongqing region, people usually play the same kind of Mahjong known for interesting and exciting rules.
Mahjong uses 108 simple tiles (牌). They are divided into three suits: dots, bamboos, and characters. There are four players in a game. At the start, each player gets 13 or 14 tiles. During the game, they take turns to draw tiles (抓牌) and discard tiles (出牌) until completing a winning hand.
The key rule in this kind of Majong is “Que Yi Men”. It means that at the start of the game, each player must choose one suit to abandon. This pushes for quick decisions—do you abandon dots, bamboos, or characters
Another important rule in this game is “Xue Zhan Dao Di” (“Bloody Battle to the End”). That means even if one player wins, the game will continue until there is only one person left who doesn’t have a winning hand. This creates more than one winner and endless excitement.
The basic winning hand (“Ping Hu”) is made of 4 sets and 1 pair of tiles. There are two set types. One is “Sequence”, which is made of 3 consecutive (连续的) tiles of the same suit. The other is “Triplet”, which is made of 3 identical (相同的) tiles. “Pair” is made of 2 identical tiles.
“Ping Hu” doesn’t need much thinking to complete. More difficult is “Qing Yi Se”, where all tiles are related to only one suit. “Qi Dui” is the most difficult, where no sets are needed and all the tiles can be divided into seven pairs. ★ The more difficult the winning hand is, the more points the player will get.
Because of these fun rules, this kind of Mahjong in Chengdu and Chongqing is really popular. It brings players lots of exciting moments. Also, while playing it, people get better at thinking clearly and making smart choices.
