Whenever it comes to holidays, my mother makes fun of my sister and me about how we “make out like robbers”. She is referring to the fact that we are half Jewish and half Indian, so we receive gifts on both the festivals of lights, Hanukkah and Diwali. Though my mother teases us, I do not mind getting two sets of gifts!
Hanukkah is celebrated on the 25th day of the Jewish month, which is usually sometime in December. On Hanukkah, like most Jewish families, we light a menorah (大烛台) and say a prayer each night. We also say a special prayer on the first night. After that, it is a tradition for my sister and me to do “hot and cold” for our hidden Hanukkah gifts. When we walk towards the gift, our parents say “hot” and when we walk farther away, they say “cold”. We each receive one present every night of Hanukkah. Another part I like about this holiday is seeing family members who we do not see often. My aunt usually stays for a few days, and we sometimes visit other relatives.
Diwali is observed on the 13th day of the dark fortnight of the month of Ashwin (October/ November). To celebrate Diwali, my family does a pooja, or prayers, in honor of the goddess Lakshmi. Since she is the goddess of wealth and prosperity, the pooja includes washing silver coins in milk and water. In India, people decorate their houses with lamps, similar to the way you might light up your house for Christmas. My family just place a few candles outside. We also set off firecrackers, which is my favorite part. We often do this activity with friends to add to the excitement.
Both holidays have different histories and stories. We celebrate them in different ways, yet they both have the same meaning. They both translate into Festival of Lights, and they both mean family and presents for me!
4.Why does the author receive gifts on both Hanukkah and Diwali
A.She lives in a well-off family.
B.She lives in two different countries.
C.Her parents like observing their different cultures.
D.Her parents like spending money buying gifts for her.

A.They share the same history and culture.
B.They are both related to the origin of lights.
C.They get the families to do their prayers.
D.They are celebrated by both Jews and Indians.
7.What is the author’s attitude towards Hanukkah and Diwali
A.Unclear. B.Indifferent. C.Appreciative. D.Critical.
Nowadays, handwriting seems to become less necessary, for young children learn to tap and touch screens before they have even learned to pick up a pencil or tie their shoelaces. Most of our written communication is done through texting on mobile phones or typing on a keyboard. And voice recognition software is becoming more and more advanced — making even keyboard unnecessary!
So, are handwriting skills important to your child Actually, handwriting is an exercise in eye-hand coordination (手眼协调), an important part of visual-motor (视觉运动) skills, which are connected with achievements in study. Scientists found that developing fine visual-motor skills in early childhood can lead to not only writing success, but better performance in reading and math in elementary school. It was also found that kids who fail to write neatly and efficiently are often accused of being lazy, and this may affect their behavior and self-worth. Moreover, a study showed that when a group of children were asked to come up with ideas for an article, the ones with better handwriting were more active and had quicker minds. In some ways, handwriting helps their brains’ development.
The first attempts at writing can be challenging for pre-school children — whose fine motor skills are not yet fully developed. But some skills to prepare for handwriting are simple to build at home and in preschool. Parents should provide lots of opportunities for kids to copy and draw shapes and simple pictures in early childhood before letters are introduced. Let your child copy your shapes in sand, or with chalk on a board before trying to draw the shapes on their own. Encourage your child to spend less time on electronic devices and more time on activities to improve eye-hand coordination.
Let’s face it — technology is certain to continue developing and more research is needed to find the best ways to teach handwriting to young children. But, there’s plenty of evidence that the handwriting practice can provide young children with a good start in developing skills needed for a healthy and successful journey in school.

B.By giving examples of the kids around him.
C.By giving some news reports on handwriting.
D.By providing evidence about outstanding pupils.
10.What does the author suggest parents do
A.Keep young children away from electronic devices.
B.Teach pre-school children to write letters with chalk.
C.Help children get ready for handwriting before school.
D.Encourage children to face writing challenges bravely.
11.What can be the best title for the text
A.How can pre-school children learn handwriting skills
B.Should handwriting be taken seriously in children’s growth
C.How can handwriting affect children’s self-confidence
D.Should homework be done through handwriting or typewriting
If you don’t use it, you lose it. At least, that’s how the old saying goes. It refers to the idea that something that does not get used regularly quickly falls into a state of decline. For example, a hobby that you haven’t done for a few years, like playing the piano. The next time you pick it up, maybe you’ve forgotten altogether! In order to prevent this, people take regular exercise to keep their skills sharp.
Well, what about the brain As we age, our brains can naturally begin to decline (衰退). In some cases, this can lead to certain mental conditions such as dementia (痴呆). However, all is not lost because these days it’s relatively easy to train your brain. Smartphones and apps have put programmes that can test, keep and even improve our memories and a number of other mental abilities. With a little practice every day, we can keep our brains sharp, right
Well, no, actually. According to a report from the Global Council on Brain Health, even though many people think it is beneficial to play some online games that are designed to improve brain health, the evidence of the benefits is “weak to non-existent”. Playing a “brain game” may lead to improvements in game performance, but this has yet to show a convincing result in people’s daily cognitive (认知的) abilities.
Don’t lose heart, though. There are other ways to develop the brain. It recommends trying new activities that challenge the way you think and are socially engaging, while leading to a healthy lifestyle. Among their suggestions are practising tai chi, taking photography classes, learning new technologies, gardening, art projects or volunteering.
There’s more good news, too. James Goodwin, chief scientist at Age UK, has said that brain decline is not unavoidable. As long as the activities are “new to you and require your concentrated attention”, they can provide benefits for brain health. So, hurry up, get out there and try something new. Maybe it’s time to try that hobby you’ve always wanted to do.
12.Why is playing the piano mentioned in paragraph 1
A.To introduce the topic of brain decline. B.To explain how to keep physically healthy.
C.To show the importance of regular exercise. D.To illustrate the meaning of an old saying.
13.What can we infer about the effectiveness of playing online brain games from paragraph 3
A.The benefits are not obvious in terms of daily cognitive abilities.
B.Both game performance and cognitive functions are greatly improved.
C.Strong and continuous benefits have been proved.
D.The evidence of the benefits is weak to non-existent.
14.According to James Goodwin, which of the following does NOT help prevent brain decline
A.Taking part in a new cooking class that teaches techniques unknown before.
B.Playing a familiar game that does not demand much thought.
C.Participating in a photography course that challenges one’s creative skills.
D.Learning a new musical instrument that requires concentration.
15.What is the main idea of the text
A.Regular exercise and healthy lifestyle are key to keeping the brain healthy.
B.Brain decline is natural and unavoidable as people age.
C.Online brain games can improve people’s cognitive abilities.
D.Engaging in new and challenging activities can benefit brain health.

19

Stay social

I feel extremely honored to be here and to deliver my speech “My Amazing Spring Festival Experience”. The Spring Festival, which falls on the first day of the Chinese lunar New Year, is the most important traditional festival in China. It means the beginning of a new year and a farewell to the past.
During this Spring Festival, I had an amazing experience. I went to the flower market with my family. When we arrived, I saw people doing different kinds of things. Some were buying traditional handicrafts, some were tasting various local snacks, and others were watching the wonderful lion and dragon dances, cheering and clapping loudly.
Although I was tired, it was totally worth it. I can’t wait for the next Spring Festival!
That’s all! Thank you!
