It was a sunny morning in April 2026 at Lakeside Middle School. Students were busy with their lessons when a loud alarm suddenly broke the silence. “Fire drill! Everyone, line up quietly!” Mr Brown, the math teacher, shouted at once.
This was the third fire drill of the year, but students took it seriously. Following the school’s new safety rules in 2026, they covered their mouths and noses with wet cloths. “Keep low to the ground!” Ms Lee reminded her class as they walked through the smoke.
On the stairs, no one pushed or ran. They stayed on the right side, leaving space for possible rescuers. Tom, a 13-year-old in Grade 8, noticed an “injured” person lying on the floor—a teacher acted to be hurt. He remembered the first aid training, so he checked the “injured” person’s breath and called for help loudly. Soon, two student volunteers with first-aid boxes arrived to assist.
3 minutes later, all 800 students got together on the playground. The headmaster counted heads and praised everyone, “Great job! This drill helped us practice new steps—using wet cloths, helping others, and staying calm. Real fires are unpredictable, but preparation keeps us safe.”

③He checked the injured person’s breath. ④He got together with classmates on the playground.
⑤He got praised by the headmaster.

In recent years, the mysterious Ailao Mountains in Yunnan Province, southwest China, have become very popular.
It started when an online video showed the mountains looking foggy. There were warning signs saying “bears nearby”. This made people feel a bit scared but excited. Soon, lots of tourists wanted to see the mountains themselves.
The Ailao Mountains are located in the central part of Yunnan and cover three cities. Some people call these mountains the “Forest of Death” because of the deep valleys, the thick forests, and the changing weather. The mountains are known as one of the biggest and least touched parts of the world. They are so far away and natural, and there are many “mysterious stories” about them.
The government there said tourists can only visit the open areas and follow the rules to keep safe. Forests there are so beautiful that tourists will never regret visiting the mountains. But they can’t go deep inside the mountains because there are no roads. The weather there can be very bad, making people feel sick. Also, the magnetic field there makes it easy to get lost. It can be very dangerous.
So, it’s necessary to respect nature and follow the rules when visiting such places!
41. Ailao Mountains are in the northeast of China.
42. Ailao Mountains became popular because they were reported on TV.
43. There may be some bears in the forest according to the text.
44. Tourists can go anywhere in the mountains freely.
45. Respecting nature and following the rules are important when we visit Ailao Mountains.

A Chinese boy named Yue Kailang climbed a mountain to draw attention to climate change. For 14 days, Yue experienced all these like snowstorms and a freezing temperature of -20℃ while climbing Mount Muztagata in Xinjiang. The 16-year-old boy from Beijing finally reached the top of the mountain at 7,546 metres.
Yue was the youngest in the “Climate Action” climbing team. The project’s goal was to make people realize the danger of global warming by visiting snowy mountains
“I loved nature when I was a kid. I often climbed mountains in Beijing. In recent years, more and more news reports have talked about the environment being destroyed, and I feel upset about it,” said Yue.
“Mount Muztagata is an ideal place to research climate change because there are large areas of mountain glaciers,” said Yue.
Along the way, Yue collected snow samples, which was part of the project’s tasks. The samples will be given to scientists to study how air pollution forms.
“We say ‘saving Earth’ every day, but I think taking real action is more important than just talking,” said Yue. “I hope my story can draw more young people’s attention to the serious problem of global warming. What I’ve experienced has shown that global warming is really not far away.”

Growing Through Hard Times
Last term, I was bad at English speaking and feared to speak in public. Every time I spoke English, I made many mistakes and felt ashamed. I wanted to give up.
My English teacher told me mistakes are part of growth. I began to read English articles aloud every morning and talked with my classmates in English after class. When I made mistakes, I wrote them down and corrected them.
Months later, I took part in an English speech competition and won a prize. This hard experience teaches me that difficulties push us to become better. Never give up when facing trouble, and we will grow through hard times.
