Twenty-five students from Blackawton Primary School in Devon,UK are the authors of a new study on how bees perceive color and patterns.In fact,the children designed the research,conducted the experiments,analyzed the data and wrote up the results.Led by bee scientist Beau Lotto,the students found that bees can use both color and spatial signals to remember where honey-producing flowers are.
Lotto began the study by asking his 25 eight- to 10-year-old co-workers what questions they would like to ask of a buff-tailed bumblebee (黄尾熊蜂).The students discussed these questions with Lotto and collectively refined the questions they would like to ask the species.One of their questions—Do bumblebees use heat to help find honey —was the subject of a paper in Nature.
In the end the group decided to try and figure out whether the bees homed in on honey-producing flowers using color or spatial signals.The students developed a series of games and puzzles for the bees.Seeing how well the animals followed the “rules” of the game would tell the students what clues the bees used to find food.Eventually,the students found that some bees used flower color to find honey,whereas some used the location of the flower.Together,the group wrote up their findings in “kidspeak”,which was ultimately published in the December 22 issue of Biology Letters.
This study,Lotto admitted,was not advanced enough to be published in a highly regarded journal.But as someone who had previously studied perception in bees,he knew that it was original,high-quality research.It also,Lotto added,flew in the face of some funding agencies that had turned down the project based on the idea young people cannot do real science.
With the success of the bee study,Lotto launched the “I,scientist” program.This program actively engages people ranging from the elderly to those still young in the act of doing science and“the process of discovery”,Lotto says.

Ancient builders across the world created structures that are still standing today,thousands of years later.Roman engineers built thick concrete sea barriers,for example.And Chinese builders raised walls against invaders.But there are many recent structures that are already starting to fail.The concrete that makes up much of our modern world lasts around 50 to 100 years.
A growing number of scientists have been studying materials from long ago.They are breaking apart pieces of buildings and reading historical texts hoping to learn how they have stood for thousands of years.The research has turned up a surprising list of materials that were mixed into old buildings.They include tree bark,volcanic ash,rice,beer and even urine (尿液).These unexpected materials could have the ability to get stronger over time and “heal” cracks when they form.
Figuring out how to copy these features could have real impacts today.While our modern concrete has the strength to hold up very tall buildings and heavy infrastructure (基础结构),it cannot compete with the endurance of these ancient materials.With the rising threats of climate change,there is a growing call to make construction more sustainable.A recent UN report estimates that the built environment is responsible for more than a third of carbon dioxide emissions worldwide.Cement (水泥) production alone makes up more than 7 percent of those emissions.
Is ancient Roman concrete better In places where seawater has been hitting structures for ages,you will find concrete “basically the way it was when it was poured 2,000 years ago,” said John Oleson,an archaeologist at the University of Victoria in Canada.
Most modern concrete starts with Portland cement,a powder made by heating limestone (石灰岩) and clay to super-high temperatures and breaking them up.That cement is mixed with water to create a paste.Then,materials like rock and gravel are added.Records from ancient builders show the Roman process was similar.The ancient builders mixed materials like burnt limestone and volcanic sand with water and rocks,creating chemical reactions to tie everything together.
Now,scientists think they have found an important reason why some Roman concrete has held up structures for thousands of years.The ancient material has an unusual power to repair itself.Exactly how is not yet clear,so scientists are starting to find reasons why.
28.What is the purpose of the comparison in paragraph 1
A.To introduce a topic.

C.To give a definition.
D.To present an argument.
29.Which aspect of ancient Roman building materials surprises scientists

Eight-year-old Xiao Ming sat with his head in his hands,muttering to himself as he tried to beat an AI-powered robot at a game of chess.But this was not in an AI showroom or lab—the robot was living on a coffee table in a Beijing apartment,along with Xiao Ming.“It’s like a little teacher or a little friend,” the boy said,as he showed his mum the next move he was considering on the chessboard.
China is actively employing AI in its bid to become a tech superpower by 2030.DeepSeek,the breakthrough Chinese chatbot that caught the world’s attention in January,was just the first shot of that ambition.Beijing plans to invest 100 billion Chinese yuan ($13.7 billion;12.9 billion) over the next 15 years as it competes with Washington to gain the edge in advanced tech.AI funding got yet another boost at the government’s annual political gathering,which is currently underway.
This comes on the heels of a 60-billion-yuan AI investment fund created in January,just days after the US further tightened export controls for advanced chips and placed more Chinese firms on a trade blacklist.
But DeepSeek has shown that Chinese companies can overcome these barriers.And that’s what has surprised Silicon Valley and industry experts—they did not expect China to catch up so soon.
“DeepSeek’s rapid rise has caused hostile reactions from some in the West,” a commentary in the state-run Beijing Daily noted,adding that “the development environment for China’s AI models remains highly uncertain.”
But China’s AI firms are not discouraged.Rather,they believe thrifty innovation (节俭创新) will win them an undeniable advantage—because it was DeepSeek’s claim that it could rival ChatGPT for a tiny amount of the cost that shocked the AI industry.
32.Why is Xiao Ming mentioned in paragraph 1
A.To provide an argument.
B.To present detailed information.
C.To lead in the topic.
D.To illustrate China’s AI firms.
33.What can be inferred from paragraph 2 and paragraph 3
A.China has already had many successful AI achievements.
B.DeepSeek was just the first step for China to become a tech giant.
C.DeepSeek has suggested China’s determination to cooperate with others.
D.China invested 100-billion-yuan investment fund in January.
34.What is the attitude of some Western countries towards DeepSeek’s booming
A.Unfriendly. B.Supportive.
C.Indifferent. D.Admiring.
35.What do we know from the passage
A.All countries are making joint efforts in the development of AI.
B.The cost of DeepSeek is much higher than that of ChatGPT.
C.China’s AI development will face no difficulty in the future.
D.Chinese AI firms could outweigh due to its less expense.
第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)
阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
What is the most important thing a scientist needs 36 So I’m going to talk about three important things.
Asking questions
Most scientists are inspired by wanting to understand how things in the world work. 37 The questions might be driven by curiosity about something amazing in nature,like “Why do these birds have such fancy feathers (羽毛) ”Or they might be driven by wanting to help communities or even the whole world with a problem,like “What can we do about climate change ”
Finding answers
How do scientists investigate the world to find answers It often takes a lot of training and some creativity. 38 It goes like this:
1.Ask a question;
2.Come up with a guess or hypothesis (假设) to answer your question;
3.Do an experiment to test your hypothesis;
4.Report what you learned,so others can learn from it too.
 39 But many others don’t.Some scientists do experiments.Some make observations instead,or create models of the things they want to learn about.
There is always more to learn
Becoming a scientist takes a lot of learning.But it is important for scientists to keep in mind they don’t know everything.The relationship between science and truth is complicated (复杂的).Scientists work hard to learn true things about the world. 40 A few hundred years ago,people thought that when we get sick it’s because of some sort of poison in the air.Then we learned about bacteria and viruses,and figured out they can make us sick.But we still haven’t figured out how everything works.
A.That means they start by asking questions.
B.There is a thing called the scientific method.
C.Science doesn’t have to involve experiments.
D.But the things we think are true change over time.
E.Unfortunately,there’s not really one simple answer.
F.Also,not all scientific projects start with a hypothesis and then test it.
G.This is a good way to do science,and many scientists always follow these steps.

I used to be a lonely girl sitting at the back of the classroom.Having failed the college entrance exams and changed schools twice,I seldom smiled.Every day I would sit at the desk,staring into textbooks and exercises,motionless and heavy-hearted.However,my classmates were in a different picture.They were playing,laughing and chatting delightedly.Besides,I hated it when they were always answering the teachers’ questions,loudly and confidently.Obviously,I had no friends in this fiercely competitive class.
Life is harder for senior students.Hardly does a day go by without exercises or tests.Every time the scores came out,mine wouldn’t be the first or second but last.I was especially tired of the endless exercises and exams,which I seemingly would never do well in.I was under a lot of pressure,feeling like a fish being fried in a pan.
Hanging over me was a dark cloud.The only dim light came from Mr.Smith.Every time I stepped into the classroom,he welcomed me with a warm smile;every time my gaze began to wander over the classroom or stare out of the window,his caring eyes would draw me back to his class.Besides,he was the only teacher who invited me to the office,talking about my studies and scores.I remembered when I came out of his office,I felt refreshed believing that I could work harder.
I was feeling everything was changing for the better.I prepared hard for the final exam of the first semester,desiring to prove that I was not the last one.So before Mr.Smith told us the test result,I was expecting something good in store for me.
But I was still the last one in the class.A burst of sadness and shame consuming me,I was heartbroken.
注意:续写词数应为150个左右。
Right at that moment,Mr.Smith invited me to his office.

Finally,the college admission letter came.

1.Ask a question;
2.Come up with a guess or hypothesis (假设) to answer your question;
3.Do an experiment to test your hypothesis;

阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

【参考范文】
Right at that moment,Mr.Smith invited me to his office.Hesitantly,I walked into the office.Mr.Smith greeted me with a smile.As he began talking,not about my grades or mistakes,but about my potential and perseverance,it became apparent that this talk was totally a different one.He didn’t blame me.Instead,he praised my resilience and determination.He encouraged me to embrace my struggles,reminding me that success was never a straight path.In his eyes,I could see his belief in me,and I knew I should never quit.
Finally,the college admission letter came.I held it in my shaking hands,doubting whether I was in a world of fantasy.But as I opened the envelope,I couldn’t believe my eyes.Despite all the odds,I got admitted! I stared at the letter in disbelief for a long time.It felt like the dawn after a seemingly endless night,a reward for the perseverance I didn’t know I had until Mr.Smith showed me.Tears welling up in my eyes,Mr.Smith might never know how much his encouragement might mean to me in my toughest time.
