Scientists in Australia have used Artificial Intelligence (AI) to help them locate (定位) a rare bird called the Plains-wanderer (领鹑). This new information will help scientists protect the birds, which are endangered.
The Plains-wanderer is a small bird that lives in Australia’s grasslands. Not just any grasslands. Plains-wanderers are picky. There can’t be too much grass or too little. They were once everywhere in Eastern Australia. But that has changed, because people have turned many grasslands into farms and cities. Scientists believe there are now only 250 to 1,000 of the birds left in the wild.
To protect these rare birds, scientists first had to learn where they were. So Zoos Victoria worked with Queensland University of Technology to locate the birds. The researchers set up 35 special recording devices (录音装置) called “song meters”. Song meters record the sounds in different areas. Then the AI system used the recording to find the calls of Plains-wanderers. The system successfully discovered Plains-wanderer calls coming from two of the sites.
It’s the first time in over 30 years that people have found Plains-wanderers. Mr. Hartnett, who works with Zoos Victoria, says the discovery is “huge”.
