A 13-year-old boy, Jonathan Werner, is breaking a new path when it comes to the Scout slogan “Do a Good Turn Daily”. The boy in Troop 506 has got an unusual high rank for someone of that age.
Like many troops, 506 sells popcorn each fall to raise money. In 2019, Jonathan watched as kids who’d made $1,800 or more in sales received a Lego set as a reward. “I really wanted that Lego set,” he says.
The next year, he earned his Lego set. But Troop 506 doesn’t just give out Lego sets. Under its generous reward program, scouts receive a percentage of their sales in gift cards and cash points. Inspired, Jonathan spent the next few years developing some astonishing tricks for selling.
Popcorn too expensive A simple donation would do. No cash Credit cards were acceptable. He set up in front of local stores, working 12 hours a day. He even struck a deal with a car dealer: In all his sales efforts, he’d wear a mask with the company’s logo if the owner would buy popcorn for all his employees.
Jonathan started pulling down jaw-dropping numbers. In 2021, he earned $46,193.75 in sales. He might have spent much on himself, but he had other ideas. The popcorn season closes in late November, and the holidays were on his mind — particularly the stories his father, Steve Kolk, had told him about his own days in foster care.
“They didn’t really have New Year.” Jonathan says. With $5,000, he could bring New Year to a lot of kids. He shifted from a big seller to a big spender, hand-selecting $5,000 worth of gifts for dozens of kids according to their personal details. Each present must be hand-wrapped. And no kid should get just one gift. If you weren’t unwrapping at least two packages, you weren’t getting the real New Year morning experience that his father never had.
The next year he strengthened his efforts, achieving a higher aim in sales and spending more on gifts. “It really makes me happy,” he says, “the feeling that I’m making those kids happy on New Year.”

We often think about relationships on a scale from positive to negative. We are drawn to loving family members, caring classmates and supportive mentors. We do our best to avoid the cruel uncle, the playground bully and the jerk boss.
But the most harmful relationships aren’t the purely negative ones. They’re the ones that are a mix of positive and negative. We often call them frenemies, supposed friends who sometimes help you and sometimes hurt you. But it’s not just friends. It’s the in-laws who volunteer to watch your kids but devalue your parenting. The manager who praises your work but denies you a promotion.
Groundbreaking research led by the psychologists Bert Uchino and Julianne Holt Lunstad shows that ambivalent relationships can be damaging to your health — even more than purely negative relationships.
Even a single ambivalent interaction can cause harm. In one experiment, people talked about controversial topics in front of a friend who offered feedback. The researchers had randomly assigned the friend to give ambivalent or negative comments. Receiving mixed feedback caused higher blood pressure than pure criticism. “I would have gone about the topic differently, but you’re doing fine” proved to be more distressing than “I totally disagree with everything you’ve said.”
The evidence that ambivalent relationships can be bad for us is obvious, but the reasons can be harder to read — just like the relationships themselves.
One reason is that ambivalent relationships are unpredictable. With a clear enemy, you put up a shield when you cross paths. With a frenemy, you never know whether Dr. Jekyll or Mr. Hyde is going to show up. Feeling unsure can break the body’s calming system and activate a fight-or-flight response. It’s unsettling to hope for a hug while also preparing for a likely quarrel.
Another factor is that unpleasant interactions are more painful in an ambivalent relationship. It’s more distressing to be let down by people you like sometimes than by people you dislike all the time. When someone stabs you in the back, it stings more if he’s been friendly to your face.

Chinese scientists have developed a new refrigeration method that solves a long-standing challenge in cooling technology. Published in Nature, the study responds to rising energy demands in applications ranging from food preservation to data center cooling.
Traditional vapor-compression systems consume vast amounts of electricity and rely on harmful refrigerants. In China, refrigeration accounts for nearly 20% of the nation’s electricity use and 7.8% of its carbon emissions. While solid-state cooling avoids harmful gases, it suffers from poor heat transfer, limiting its real-world application.
Led by Professor Li Bing from the Chinese Academy of Sciences, the research team overcame this by combining solid cooling effects with liquid flow. They used a common, non-toxic salt whose dissolution in water absorbs large amounts of heat. Conversely, applying pressure causes the salt to come out and release heat. Cycling this pressure achieves continuous cooling.
“Unlike traditional solid methods, where heat moves slowly, our system integrates the refrigerant and heat-transfer medium into a single liquid,” Li said. “This solves the ‘impossible triangle’ — achieving low pollution, strong cooling, and fast heat transfer all at once.”
Lab tests showed a temperature drop of nearly 30°C in just 20 seconds at room temperature, and up to 54°C at higher temperatures — significantly outperforming existing solid coolers. A prototype cycle achieved a cooling capacity of 67 joules per gram with nearly 77% efficiency. The system also proved stable, reversible, and instantly responsive to pressure changes.
“This technology moves beyond traditional refrigeration principles,” Li added. “By turning the coolant into a fluid, it opens the door to high-performance, zero-emission cooling for homes and industry.”
He noted the method’s strong high-temperature performance makes it an ideal candidate for heat management in next-generation AI computing facilities. While engineering challenges remain, especially in achieving rapidly switchable pressure cycles, the principle could be adapted to other materials for diverse cooling needs.
