Boyan Slat spent his early childhood in Delft, a historic university town known for its creative atmosphere. From the age of two, he showed a natural talent for invention, engaging in projects like building tree houses in his backyard. This early creativity was probably influenced by his father’s artistic career.
His multicultural background — combining Dutch, British, and Croatian influences — exposed him to different ways of thinking from a young age, shaping a wide worldview that focused on problem-solving and global awareness. During his teenage years, this foundation began to connect with his interests in oceanic environments, giving him the key insight that large-scale technological solutions might be possible.
While on vacation in Greece at 16 years old, Boyan went scuba diving and saw more plastic bags than fish in the sea, which left him thinking, “Why can’t we just clean this up ” He started looking further into the problem, considered possible technological solutions to ocean plastic pollution, and worked hard to obtain practical knowledge through a school project that helped develop his ideas. In late 2012, he presented these ideas at a TEDx conference.
At first, armed with only ?300 of saved pocket money, he struggled to make progress. However, everything changed in February 2013 when his TEDx video suddenly became popular online, and the attention that followed allowed Boyan to found The Ocean Cleanup. Boyan then gathered a team of volunteers and launched a crowdfunding campaign, which funded a year-long feasibility study (可行性研究) — the first real step in bringing Boyan’s technological solutions to life. That is how Boyan turned his dream into reality.
Today, The Ocean Cleanup is actively cleaning up the Great Pacific Garbage Patch and has been using interceptors (拦截器) in some of the world’s most polluted rivers to prevent plastic from reaching the ocean in the first place.

On a recent trip through the Himalayas, my bruises (淤伤)became the truest souvenirs. More personal than anything bought, they carry a unique memory. Over time, my desire for typical souvenirs has faded; I now value experiences over objects. But maybe that’s just me. Two out of three Americans bring back a souvenir from their travels, with US sales topping $21bn in 2022.
Humans have long collected objects to remember experiences. With the rise of industrialization and tourism, souvenirs became more common. Souvenirs bring back happy memories, serving as a simple way to say, “I was there.” “At the heart of our actions is a desire to feel heard, seen and connected,” explains Madarkal, a professor in India.
Travellers today are more aware of their impact on local communities, but the problems caused by travel souvenirs are often overlooked. In a 2022 Australian report, up to 75% of souvenirs marketed as “local” are made overseas. Real goods are expensive due to time-consuming labour involved, so some shops sell cheap fakes (假货)with most customers giving little regard to their origins. While buying fakes may seem to support local sellers, it often minimizes the profit of the traditional handicrafts, creating a negative cycle.
So, how can you buy meaningful souvenirs “Be curious...it’s not just about buying or choosing carefully, it’s about rejecting and explaining why,” said Madarkal. Asking where an item comes from and how it is made is a good first step. Choosing unique designs over mass-produced goods at fair-trade markets helps support local communities. Intentions also matter, as souvenirs should be chosen for personal meaning rather than habit. And souvenirs don’t always have to be objects — journals or skills gained can become lasting reminders.
Ultimately, there’s no universal rule for a “meaningful” souvenir. But next time you’re grabbing a quick airport souvenir, pause and reflect.

It is widely acknowledged that crows (乌鸦) are highly intelligent with cognitive abilities similar to those of 5- to 7-year-old children. Past research has shown that they can count to four and distinguish human voices and faces, and some species can even create tools for future use. Lately, a special study has expanded this list further, revealing that crows can recognize basic geometric features, such as side lengths, parallel lines, and right angles, and shapes like stars, crescents, squares, and irregular four-sided figures.
With the purpose of testing the crows’ geometric skills, scientists showed two crows six shapes on a digital screen and trained them to peck (啄) at the outlier — the shape that looked different from the rest. When the birds chose correctly, they were rewarded with a tasty snack. At first, the researchers made the outlier obvious, such as one flower among five crescents. As the birds got used to the task, the shapes became more similar including squares and irregular four-sided figures. Despite the increasing difficulty, the crows continued to identify the outlier correctly.
The shape recognition ability of crows remains a topic of interest for researchers. They suspect this ability may help them with navigation as they fly around. The birds may have also developed this ability to help them search for food or identify other individual crows — including potential mates — based on their facial features. “All these abilities, at the end of the day, from a biological point of view, have evolved because they provide a survival advantage or a reproductive advantage,” says the study senior author Andreas Nieder, a neurophysiologist at the University of Tübingen in Germany.
In the future, researchers hope to explore which areas of the birds’ brains are responsible for their exceptional ability in geometry. Birds don’t have a cerebral cortex (大脑皮层) — at least, not in the same way that humans do. But for us, that part of the brain is responsible for thinking and other complex functions. Crows still have these abilities, so the researchers assume there must be something else going on inside their heads. “Obviously, evolution found two different ways of giving rise to behaviorally flexible animals,” Nieder says.

Our first game began and I played with full attention. I carefully moved each piece, recalling Grandpa’s instructions, and even tried to trap his king. Grandpa smiled gently, sometimes nodding in approval when I made a good move. When I accidentally moved a pawn wrong, he didn’t blame me but pointed it out softly and guided me to correct it. The room was no longer silent — we chatted quietly about the game, and I even heard Grandpa laugh for the first time that afternoon. I forgot my initial unwillingness and got totally absorbed in the chessboard.
We were really enjoying ourselves when Mum returned. She stood at the door, smiling in surprise as she saw us leaning over the chessboard, talking and laughing. “I see you two have made friends,” she said. Grandpa looked at me warmly and patted my shoulder: “This kid is a quick learner.” I grinned, feeling a warm connection with him. As we left, I told Grandpa I would come back to play chess with him again. For the first time, I realized that Grandpa wasn’t unfriendly — he just needed someone to share his time with, and that someone could be me.
