Iceland lost its distinction this month of being one of the last places in the world without a confirmed sighting of wild mosquitoes, and their presence was discovered thanks to a rope dipped in sugary red wine in a garden. The first Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area marine underwater robot application challenge was held in an active marine ranch (牧场) in Zhuhai, Guangdong Province, moving tests from labs to the open sea to explore how robots can boost the smart ocean economy.

A Shenzhen company’s cleaning robot works 24 hours, 10 times more efficient than traditional ways. Westlake University won first prize with embodied AI, multimodal perception and large language models.
Before the challenge, organizers offered a 150-million-yuan demand list, attracting over 100 million yuan in potential orders. Four winners have agreed to settle in Zhuhai.
China’s underwater robotics market exceeded 10 billion yuan in 2024 and is expected to hit 40 billion yuan by 2027.
