Anyone who knows me will tell you I struggle with waiting. My impatience might explain why I’ve never seen the appeal of gardening. I always thought it was an activity for kids or retirees, and I never understood the passion for growing things — it seemed like the most uninteresting hobby imaginable.
For a time, I felt stuck in a never-ending waiting game, frustrated (沮丧的) by all the parts of life I couldn’t rush. I’d simply tried my hand at growing some young plants despite my dislike for gardening, and I’d held onto them during a busy time in my life. With more time on my hands than I knew what to do with, those young plants seemed like the perfect way to mark the passing days.
During the first week of tending to them, I was troubled by their lack of obvious progress. No green shoots came up; no cuttings showed signs of taking root. Still, I watered and cared for them regularly. It took longer than I expected, but slowly my plants began to grow — not all at once, but steadily (稳定地), in their own time.
I learned not to give up on my plants just because they took time to grow, and in turn, I unfolded a new leaf of my own: patience. This willingness to wait spread to every part of my life. When I felt stressed about an unfinished to-do list, I learned to come to terms with it. My plants didn’t worry about constant (持续的) productivity; they simply responded to the sun, and I realized there would always be more work tomorrow.
I would rather be like my plants, willing to enjoy both sunshine and rain, and to find joy in the slow moments of life. Now that my days are full again, I face the familiar rush. But each morning as I water my plants, I’m reminded that nothing needs to be rushed. I can live a full, active life while still finding time to stop and smell the roses.
4. What did the author think of gardening at first
A.A boring activity.
B.A relaxing way.
C.An annoying hobby.
D.An exciting challenge.
5. How did the author feel during the first week of gardening
A.Ashamed.
B.Inspired.
C.Anxious.
D.Content.
6. What does the underlined phrase “come to terms with it” in paragraph 4 probably mean
A.Put it off with purpose.
B.Resolve it at once.
C.Fight against it bravely.
D.Accept it peacefully.
7. What message does the text deliver
A.Hard work pays off.
B.Good things take time.
C.Think twice before you act.
D.Practice makes perfect.

After a serious oil spill (泄露) near the shore, whale scientist Iain Kerr went to study its impact on sperm whales, trying to collect small tissue samples (组织样本) with specialized devices by boat. However, each time his boat approached a surfacing whale, it quickly dove away, leaving him empty-handed — he described it as “playing Whac-A-Mole”.
As darkness fell, a whale dove in front of Kerr and covered him in whale mucus (黏液), which later inspired Kerr to invent the MucusBot, a drone equipped with six sterile petri dishes (无菌培养皿). It flies low over the whale as it surfaces to breathe, and the petri dishes are activated to collect the mucus samples.
Today, such drones are used globally to collect mucus from sperm whales, blue whales, dolphins and more — mucus holds valuable data like DNA and microbiome makeup. “MucusBot can observe from a safe distance, reducing stress on the animals. It really has changed my life,” says Kerr.
Beyond collecting mucus, drones can also collect other samples to help find viruses (病毒) carried by whales like alphaherpesvirus. With clear and advanced cameras, they can follow whales’ movements and make sure sampling works, and try sampling many times on the spot.
Researchers use such drones to check humpback whales for viruses, and find different viral sequences from their samples. Without affecting the whales’ behavior, the light and cheap sampling tool is a useful way to monitor the health of humpback whales.
Despite their short battery lives and limited flight ranges, drones are proving highly promising for whale research. They will be widely used to rescue whales involved in fishing nets and monitor the long-term impact of environmental changes on sea creatures.
8. What can we infer about the MucusBot
A.It works best in a dark environment.
B.It was designed to replace research boats.
C.It can remove mucus directly from whales.
D.It was created based on an unpleasant experience.
9. For what purpose does the author mention humpback whales in paragraph 5
A.To introduce the living habits of whales.
B.To clearly explain why whales are endangered.
C.To further show drones’ role in studying whales.
D.To explain how drones help whales resist viruses.
10. What is the last paragraph mainly about
A.The drones’ future applications.
B.The drones’ possible effects on sea life.
C.The limitations of drone flights.
D.The ways to monitor environmental changes.
11. What can be the best title of the text
A.Drones: Strengths and Challenges
B.Iain Kerr: Inventor of the MucusBot
C.MucusBot: Saving Whales from Fishing Nets
D.Drone Tech: A New Tool for Whale Research

Looking through social platforms after dinner and suddenly feeling a strong desire for the pizza in an ad is by no means a personal failing or lack of self-control. Research suggests it may have something to do with how the human brain works, and raises fresh questions about what frequent contact with food images is actually doing to us.
Researchers from the University of East Anglia conducted an experiment to test the effect of food images on the brain. Ninety students volunteered to take part in the study. Participants arrived at the laboratory in a state of hunger, and their brain electrical activity was continuously monitored with professional equipment throughout the process. They first rated their current level of hunger and the appeal of various foods presented to them. Then each participant ate one of their chosen foods until full.
After the meal, ratings of the food the participants had eaten dropped sharply, and they turned to the uneaten food. But researchers compared the brain electrical activity recorded before and after the meal to identify any changes related to appetite (食欲) and observed that an electrical wave appeared when a person saw food images, showing no corresponding weakening after the meal. Even in the brain regions most closely associated with appetite, the response to food images remained unchanged — despite the participants’ sense of fullness.
This phenomenon can be explained by the brain’s two decision-making systems: a conscious (有意识的), goal-directed system that adjusts behavior based on current fullness, and an unconscious, habit-driven system. Years of repeated contact has deeply programmed food images into the second system, which operates independently of whether the body needs more food.
The finding helps raise public awareness of the hidden impact of food images and control unreasonable eating urges. It offers a scientific basis for adjusting food advertising rules, such as limiting the display of high-fat food images during evening hours or requiring health warnings on ads for unhealthy foods.
12. What does the research focus on
A.Hidden power of dieting.
B.Brain’s response to food images.
C.Social concerns about eating habits.
D.Advertising effects on food choices.
13. What did the researchers find about the brain’s reaction after participants were full
A.It focused more on eaten food.
B.It showed reduced interest in all foods.
C.It remained active for food images.
D.It completely ignored food-related signals.
14. What does the habit-driven system in paragraph 4 do
A.It functions regardless of bodily needs.
B.It controls how much food the body needs.
C.It adjusts food intake based on hunger levels.
D.It depends on the goal-directed system to activate.
15. What is the last paragraph mainly about
A.Practical uses of the research discovery.
B.Scientific guidance of public eating habits.
C.Reasons to improve food advertising rules.
D.Harmful influences of high-fat food images.

Last winter, I planned to keep exercising through the holiday. I signed up for an online fitness class and followed the videos on my phone. Halfway through the holiday, the fitness app crashed for two days. ___16___ Luckily, the gym pass I bought earlier helped me continue my exercise plan.
Online exercise is convenient with flexible time. It can show you professional workout plans from excellent coaches around the world. ___17___ For example, you can choose one that fits your free time and even rewatch the videos to correct your moves at any moment, creating a convenient exercise experience.
However, online exercise has some limitations. Working out alone at home means you miss the collective energy and peer (同伴) encouragement found in a gym. ___18___ In comparison, the gym training fills the gap. You can make friends with other gym members, who can inspire you to keep working out.
Personally, I prefer to work out in the gym. As I’m overweight, online exercise that offers one-size-fits-all fitness courses can’t provide targeted guidance for my body condition. Improper workout moves, if not corrected in time, may cause joint or other injuries, which is especially risky for me. ___19___ This helps me avoid injury and exercise more effectively.
However, when necessary — such as when I am on a business trip — I will choose online fitness to continue my exercise plan. Online workouts, with their flexibility and convenience, allow me to keep exercising even when I can’t go to the gym, ensuring that my fitness plan is not broken by business trips or other outings. ___20___
A.I had to stop exercising for a while.
B.It’s more inexpensive than going to a gym.
C.So it’s smart to keep both options in the fitness plan.
D.The fitness classes with a wide selection are available.
E.It is the most practical method to improve mental health.
F.The gym offers professional personalized guidance, though.
G.Without the social atmosphere, it’s easy to lose interest over time.

As the New Year approached, ten-year-old Martin was very cheerful. This lively, playful kid always tilted (倾斜) his head when listening to what others said, for he was deaf in the left ear — but he never let it stop him from running and playing with his best friend Kenny.
Kenny’s family lived just a small pasture (牧场) away from Martin’s, separated by a fence. The two boys were never apart. They loved exploring the woods, but they worried about getting lost. Kenny had always dreamed of owning a compass, which would help them explore farther safely. However, his family was poor, so he could never ask for one. The small wish remained in his heart for a long time.
For weeks, Martin had been quietly saving up his pocket money. A few days before New Year, Martin walked up to his mom Mary, glowing with pride, “Mom, I got Kenny a New Year’s gift. Wanna take a look ” He carefully took out a beautiful pocket compass.
“It’s lovely, Martin,” Mary said softly. “Kenny’s family can’t give you a gift in return, and we don’t want him to feel uncomfortable.” Martin nodded, his eyes firm, “I understand, Mom… but what if we make it our secret ”
On New Year’s Eve, a cold and rainy night, Martin slipped (溜) out of the house, holding the small box tightly. He crossed the wet pasture, ducked under the fence, and slipped into Kenny’s yard. He tiptoed to the door, gently placed the gift in the mailbox and then hurried away. Suddenly, he lost his balance and fell onto the wet ground, his shoulder hitting a stone. A wave of pain shot through him, but he didn’t make a sound. He slowly got up and dragged himself home, his lips trembling and eyes wet. “I fell on the way back… and my shoulder hurts,” he whispered to his mom.
Mary treated his injury right away. He looked up at her seriously, “Kenny didn’t see me, Mom. I’m sure of it. He’ll be happy when he finds the gift.”

The next day, Kenny knocked at Martin’s door. He held the compass tightly in his hand, eyes bright with excitement.
