Imagine staying in the icy wilderness of Antarctica, cut off from the rest of the world, with only a small group of scientists. Such a group might be expected to develop a culture of its own, but would that develop a new shared accent
As part of the project to explain the spoken accent development, a group of researchers led by Jonathan Harrington, professor of phonetics and speech processing at the Ludwig-Maximilian University of Munich, started the study. The researchers studied a group of 11 scientists spending six months on an island just west of the Antarctic Peninsula.
The scientists were from several countries, including the US, the UK, Iceland and Germany. As part of the study, they had to record themselves reading a list of vocabularies from a computer screen every few weeks. The list included words with vowel (元音) sounds /i:/, /u:/ and / / that have been found to change over time in different English accents.
The recordings were then sent to researchers. When the recordings were studied, the researchers found that the pronunciation of words with an / / sound— such as “flow,”“code” and “sew”— had changed a little over the six months. The scientists began to pronounce it more toward the front of their mouths than toward the back. (British pronunciations are already typically fronter than American / /.)
The researchers believe it shows the development of a new accent among the scientists. Harrington said, “When we speak to each other, we remember that speech, and then that has an influence on our own speech production.”
While only small changes were recorded, the researchers believe the experiment helps to explain how different accents are created among enclosed (封闭的) communities — and may help us know why American and British English have developed as they have.
24.What were the scientists expected to do during the study
A.Tell stories. B.Show pictures.
C.Make sentences. D.Read and record words.
25.Which word’s pronunciation may change in the enclosed community in the study
A.show. B.sheep.
C.tube. D.adult.
26.Which of the following do the researchers agree with concerning the finding
A.It proves life in Antarctica is difficult.
B.It uncovers the connection of vowel sounds.
C.It helps build communications among people with different accents.
D.It may explain American and British English’s development.
27.What is the best title for the text
A.Different Accents Around the World.
B.The Development of English Language.
C.Does a New Accent Form Among Enclosed Communities
D.What Would Scientists’ Daily Life Be Like in Antarctica

Few of us haven’t read Cinderella, the story of a young woman living in poverty who meets the prince of her dreams. Some might not want to admit it, but there is a hidden Cinderella in everyone’s heart—we all wish we could achieve recognition or success after a period of obscurity or neglect.
Mary Santiago has that secret dream, too. Her story is featured in Another Cinderella Story, a film set in a US high school.
Mary is shy but loves to pared with other girls, she is invisible. However, her world changes completely when a famous teenager pop singer, Joey Parker, appears.
Joey is everything that the rest of the boys in her class are not — kind, handsome and desirable. Mary and Joey’s paths cross at a ball. They meet and fall in love with each other. But when Mary has to rush back home, she leaves behind her MP3 player, which becomes the only clue Joey has to find the girl of his dreams. Of course, there is a wicked (邪恶的) stepmother, who turns out to be Dominique Blatt and she takes in Mary after her dancer mother dies. Dominique treats Mary like a maid and does everything she can to make sure Mary doesn’t get into the top dance school. Her two daughters are equally determined to stop Joey falling for Mary, even if that means embarrassing her.
The story, though it mostly follows Cinderella, does add a few modern day twists to the classic fairy tale. Refreshingly, the film, unlike many high school films, does not focus on looks, although the actors are all beautiful. There is also a lot less materialism in Another Cinderella Story than in many similar movies.
“The movie takes the Cinderella fairytale as its jumping off point,” writes the movie critic Amber Wilkinson. “The focus is firmly on following your dream.”

A.a fairy tale B.an essay about dreams

When Alex Lin was 11 years old, he read an alarming article in the newspaper about e-waste. The article said that people were throwing away their e-waste in places it should never go. This was dangerous, the article said, because e-waste contains poisonous chemicals and metals like lead. These harmful substances (物质) can leak into the environment, getting into crops, animals, water supplies — and people.
Alex showed the article to a few of his classmates. They were worried too. But what could they do about this problem with e-waste How would they even start “The first thing we did,” Alex says, “was to learn more about the problem.” Alex and his friends spent several weeks gathering information about the chemicals in e-waste and their effects on humans. They learned how to dispose (处理) of e-waste properly and how it could be recycled. “Then,” he says, “we had to find out what the situation was in our town. So we sent out a survey.”
What they found shocked them: Of the people who answered the survey, only one in eight even knew what e-waste was, let alone how to properly dispose of it. Alex and his friends went into action. They advertised in the local newspaper and distributed notices to students, asking residents to bring their unwanted electronics to the school parking lot. The drive lasted two days, and they collected over 21,000 pounds of e-waste.
The next step was to set up an e-waste drop-off center for the town and to find a responsible company to recycle the waste. That was when Alex and his friends learned another scary fact about e-waste — some irresponsible recycling companies don’t break down the e-waste and dispose of it safely themselves. Instead, they ship it overseas to countries such as China and Nigeria, where local environmental laws are not applied. “We checked carefully online to make sure the company we chose didn’t do this,” Alex says.
Because of the work of people like Alex and his team, more and more people are getting the message about safe disposal of e-waste. As Alex says, “Today’s technology should not become tomorrow’s poisonous trash.”
32.What can we learn about Alex from paragraph 1 and paragraph 2
A.He was curious about chemistry experiments.
B.He possessed a strong sense of responsibility.
C.He set out to solve the problem individually.
D.He formed the habit of reading newspapers.
33.What does the underlined word “drive” mean
A.Campaign. B.Imagination. C.Performance. D.Technology.
34.Why did some companies transport the e-waste to other countries
A.Lack of available space was the reason for shipping.
B.Recycling was totally banned in their own country.
C.They were running their companies on a tight budget.
D.They were not charged with insecurely disposing it.
35.What’s the suitable title for the text
A.Reusing School Computers B.Recycling Electronic Waste
C.Meeting a challenge D.Doing Scientific Experiment

In the 1960s and 1970s, the greatest fear was that the human race, and possibly all advanced life forms on the planet, could be wiped out by nuclear missiles. 36 Scientists are thinking of ways to lower this risk, such as replacing coal and oil with forms of renewable energy. But they are also preparing for the worst: what can we do if the earth can no longer sustain us
37 The most likely choice is Mars, which is relatively close to Earth and has an environment more friendly than that of other planets. Mars has fascinated people since ancient times, and today our interest in Martian exploration is greater than ever before. Since the 1960s, we have been sending unmanned spacecraft to Mars. 38 Our robots have explored the Martian surface, testing the soil and searching for resources, water and signs of life.
However, sending people there will require all the skill, courage and intelligence of the human race. While the Moon can be reached within days, it would take months to reach Mars, travelling through dangerous solar radiation. And even if the first settlers do reach Mars safely, they may not be able to return to Earth — ever. 39 As early as the 1980s, scientists were building Biosphere 2 in the Arizona desert, consisting of a closed space in which people, animals and plants could live together. Although the two-year experiment was a failure, it did provide us with a better understanding of how humans might be able to live on another planet.
Anyway, human settlement of Mars is still decades away. In the meantime, scientific research shows that the planet Earth is getting warmer. This change is being caused by human activity and is having a terrible effect on the globe. 40
A.That definitely is a big step forward.
B.Right now, it’s the only one we have.
C.One option is to explore other planets to see if we could live on them.
D.Staying alive will be a daily challenge, but isn’t impossible, as proved by scientists.
E.Our probes have orbited the planet, sending back valuable data and stunning images.
F.Today, however, environmental problems have taken over as the greatest risk to life on Earth.
G.Until we are finally able to live on another planet, we need to take far better care of our own.

Ricky had finished school in his small hometown. Although his father hoped he would go on to study for a Master’s degree, Ricky was determined to learn computer skills. At school, he had once watched a computer demonstration and was deeply impressed. From then on, he made up his mind to leave the town and go to the city.
Life in the city was far from easy. Ricky’s troubles began with finding a place to live. He looked at several rooms, but either the rent was too high or the place was too far from his training institute. At last, an elderly couple agreed to take him in. The room was small and poorly ventilated, but Ricky felt thankful because they also provided him with meals.
Ricky attended classes regularly, yet he found it hard to follow the instructor. He sat at the back of the classroom, kept his eyes on his notebook, and wrote down whatever he could understand. As soon as class was over, he would leave quietly without speaking to anyone. Later, he would borrow the books recommended by the instructor from the library and spend the evening trying to understand them. While his classmates relaxed and enjoyed themselves after class, Ricky stayed by himself. Though he longed to join them, he lacked the courage. As the days went by, he began to doubt his decision. More than once, he wished he had listened to his father and chosen further study instead.
One day, his father came to see him and found him looking miserable. Ricky could no longer hold back his feelings. He told his father that he wanted to give up and return home. After listening patiently, his father suggested that he talk to the instructor about his difficulties and try reading books written by local authors or in a language he could understand more easily.

根据第一段“When Alex Lin was 11 years old, he read an alarming article in the newspaper about e-waste. The article said that people were throwing away their e-waste in places it should never go. This was dangerous, the article said, because e-waste contains poisonous chemicals and metals like lead. These harmful substances (物质) can leak into the environment, getting into crops, animals, water supplies—and people.(当Alex Lin 11岁的时候,他在报纸上读到一篇关于电子垃圾的令人震惊的文章。这篇文章说,人们把电子垃圾扔到不该去的地方。这篇文章说,这很危险,因为电子垃圾含有有毒化学物质和铅等金属。这些有害物质会泄漏到环境中,进入农作物、动物、供水系统和人体内)”以及第二段“Alex showed the article to a few of his classmates. So we sent out a survey.”(亚历克斯把这篇文章拿给几个同学看。
根据前文“Alex and his friends went into action. They advertised in the local newspaper and distributed notices to students, asking residents to bring their unwanted electronics to the school parking lot.(亚历克斯和他的朋友们开始行动起来。他们在当地报纸上登广告,并向学生分发通知,要求居民把他们不需要的电子产品带到学校的停车场)”可知,他们在当地报纸打广告,并把通知发给学生,要求居民把不要的电子垃圾产品带到学校停车场,所以这是一次运动,推知drive意为“活动,运动”,和A项意思相近。故选A项。
根据第四段“That was when Alex and his friends learned another scary fact about e-waste—some irresponsible recycling companies don’t break down the e-waste and dispose of it safely themselves. Instead, they ship it overseas to countries such as China and Nigeria, where local environmental laws are not applied.(就在那时,亚历克斯和他的朋友们了解到另一个关于电子垃圾的可怕事实——一些不负责任的回收公司不分解电子垃圾,也不自己安全处理。相反,他们将其运往中国和尼日利亚等不适用当地环境法的国家)”可知,一些不负责的公司会将垃圾运到其它国家,是因为这些国家环保法不健全,在这里不安全的处理垃圾并不会被指控。故选D项。
35.主旨大意题。根据第一段“When Alex Lin was 11 years old, he read an alarming article in the newspaper about e-waste. The article said that people were throwing away their e-waste in places it should never go. This was dangerous, the article said, because e-waste contains poisonous chemicals and metals like lead. These harmful substances (物质) can leak into the environment, getting into crops, animals, water supplies—and people.(当Alex Lin 11岁的时候,他在报纸上读到一篇关于电子垃圾的令人震惊的文章。这篇文章说,人们把电子垃圾扔到不该去的地方。这篇文章说,这很危险,因为电子垃圾含有有毒化学物质和铅等金属。这些有害物质会泄漏到环境中,进入农作物、动物、供水系统和人体内)”以及最后一段“Because of the work of people like Alex and his team, more and more people are getting the message about safe disposal of e-waste. As Alex says, “Today’s technology should not become tomorrow’s poisonous trash.”(由于像亚历克斯和他的团队这样的人的工作,越来越多的人得到了安全处理电子垃圾的信息。正如亚历克斯所说,“今天的技术不应该成为明天的有毒垃圾。”)”可知,本文主要讲述了Alex为解决电子垃圾污染问题,所做出的一系列努力,所以B项“Recycling Electronic Waste(回收电子废物)”是本文最好的标题。故选B项。

40.上文“In the meantime, scientific research shows that the planet Earth is getting warmer. This change is being caused by human activity and is having a terrible effect on the globe.(与此同时,科学研究表明,地球正在变暖。这种变化是由人类活动引起的,正在对地球造成可怕的影响)”指出人类活动对地球造成了不良影响。G选项“Until we are finally able to live on another planet, we need to take far better care of our own.(在我们最终能够在另一个星球上生活之前,我们需要更好地爱护我们自己的星球)”基于上文的问题,提出在能移居其他星球前要爱护地球的建议,与上文逻辑一致,总结全文。故选G项。

故填a。

continue to do sth.或continue doing sth. 故填to attract/attracting。
