Once upon a time, on a farm, there lived an old woman named Madame Frissette. She lived with her chickens, Clarice, Clara, Claudia, and Molly. One day, the tax (税) collector came to the farm. The King had decided to raise taxes. If she couldn’t pay in a week, her farm would be taken. Madame cried. Her chickens, of course, had seen the whole thing.

The chickens worked very hard for the next few days, in secret. Soon it was Friday morning. At sunrise, Madame Frissette opened the door. “Oh, my!” she shouted.
