①If you dig in a garden, you may discover much more than soil.Take a closer look, and you might find ants, plant roots and many tiny living things under the surface.Even though they are hard to see,a world of life does live in the soil.
②In fact, healthy soil is “alive” because it’s home to worms (蠕虫),insects and tiny living things.Soil is an ecosystem where earthworms (蚯蚓) play a very important part.
③Earthworms like soil for several reasons. One is that it has their food. Earthworms eat decaying (腐烂的) plant matter such as fallen leaves, fruits and vegetables,as well as dead roots and the remains of dead animals.
④Another reason earthworms like soil is that it protects them.Soil serves as a natural hiding place for earthworms, protecting them from being caught by bigger animals like birds. Also, soil protects earthworms’ soft bodies.By staying underground, earthworms avoid being dried out by the sun, which helps them keep wet and a lower body temperature.
⑤Not only is soil good for earthworms, but earthworms are also good for soil. They play an important role as decomposers in it.Earthworms eat some pieces of soil along with plant and animal matter. They break these things down into smaller and simpler pieces and then make them out of the body as casts (排泄物).The casts are full of nutrients (营养物) that are good for plants and can be taken by them more easily.
⑥Besides making soil richer with their casts, earthworms also improve soil structure. They move and dig tunnels (通道) in soil. This allows oxygen to enter and helps water go into soil better.Tunnels also create space for plant roots,so that they can grow more easily and deeper into the ground. With more nutrients, oxygen, water and space for roots, plants are able to grow better.
⑦Earthworms are necessary members living in soil. The relationship between earthworms and soil is mutually beneficial (互相有益).They depend on each other and work together to keep the balance and maintain (维持) the health of the garden ecosystem.
( )16.How does the writer develop his idea that earthworms like soil
A.By giving reasons. B.By asking questions.
C.By listing numbers. D.By comparing differences.
( )17.What does the underlined word “decomposers” in Paragraph ⑤ mean
A.生产者 B.传输者
C.分解者 D.调节者
( )18.Which is the right order to show the cycle in a soil ecosystem
a.Plants grow.
b.Earthworms produce casts and dig tunnels.
c.Nutrients, oxygen, water and space are offered to soil.
d.Earthworms eat dead plants and soil pieces. e.Plants die and fall into soil.
A. B. C. D.
( )19.Which of the following is the structure of the passage
A. B.
C. D.
( )20.What’s the best title for the passage
A.Healthy Ecosystems B.Kinds of Earthworms
C.Many Living Things in Soil D.Earthworms in a Soil Ecosystem

China’s Largest Desert gets a Green Belt
The Taklimakan Desert is China’s largest desert. It covers an area of 337,600 square kilometres.Strong winds often blow across this land. They take large amounts of sand with them. This makes the desert a big source of sandstorms.
Efforts began in 1978 to plant trees to stop the sand. One of the early pioneers,Dr.Liu Wei,an environmental scientist, led a team into that hard environment.Their task was to protect and bring new life to some areas of the desert. They had to face the burning sun,the sandstorms and the shortage of water there. They worked really hard, kept trying all the time, and came up with many new ideas.
Also, many people didn’t believe they could succeed. But they didn’t give up.Little by little, some green oases (绿洲) showed up.Now,this green belt is complete. On November 28,the last batch (批) of trees was planted in Yutian County. And the oases are really helpful for the wild animals, giving them better places to live. The green belt greatly benefits (使受益) local people. It is helpful for farming and good for the environment.

任务五 One possible version:
Keeping Ecosystems Balanced
The ecological balance is key to the survival of all living things. It provides us with clean air, fresh water, and a balanced climate. However, human activities like pollution and cutting down too many trees have broken this balance, causing problems like climate change and animals being endangered.
We must take action to protect our planet. First, we can reduce waste by practising the “3Rs”—reduce, reuse and recycle. Second, planting more trees helps improve air quality and provides homes for animals. Also, saving water and electricity in daily life is a simple but useful way.
If everyone does their part, we can keep ecosystems balanced and create a healthier world for the future.
