When I was young, flowers filled my mom’s garden each spring. I never thought that Mom had done much about them behind the scenes (在幕后), until she shared her secret with me.
One day last November, Mom and I spent a whole morning planting flower bulbs (球茎). I dropped one in each hole (坑) and covered it over with earth. My fingers were terribly cold by the time we finished. However, the ground looked just as flower bulb empty and flat (平的) as it had been before. Then Mom told me to wait. I didn’t only wait—I watched. I watched hopefully all through the winter…
On the last day of April, I went outside to find the garden full of colorful flowers. Our hard work paid off.
“My boy, tomorrow morning,” Mom said, “we will walk the neighborhood and leave a basket of flowers on each front door.”
“What ” I almost cried. “Are we selling our flowers ”
“Of course not,” she said excitedly. “In fact, nobody will even know they’re from us. We’ll leave them at our neighbors’ as a surprise. Doesn’t that sound fun ”
“To me, it doesn’t sound fun at all!” I replied unhappily. “They’re our flowers. We should keep them for ourselves!”
“Flowers are like kindness.” Mom said. “Their beauty is meant to be shared.”
Early the next morning, Mom woke me up. We brought the baskets and stopped near the first house. I took one basket, set it by the front door and rang the bell. Then we quickly ran away, hid behind the trees and waited.
Finally, the door opened. A man came out, looking surprised. He picked up the flower basket and then smiled. Mom hugged me. I got a good feeling inside. Now I knew what she meant about beauty sharing. I couldn’t wait to get to the next house.
By the time we got home, I was having a big smile. The garden was empty, but my heart was full.

27. After they finished planting the bulbs, the ground looked completely different from before. (A正确/B错误)
28. At first, the writer didn’t agree with his mom’s idea of giving flowers to the neighbors. (A正确/B错误)
29. When they left flower baskets, they waited in front of the trees to see what would happen. (A正确/B错误)

Lightning strikes (袭击) kill millions of trees each year—but it is found that some large tropical (热带的) trees can not only stay alive after they’re hit by a strike, but also benefit from its effects, according to a recent study.
Some trees are getting hit by lightning many times over their lifetime. But why can they survive Researchers don’t know for sure. However, they think that trees will be heated less if they’re more conductive (导电的). That means the energy from lightning is just moving to their neighbors, instead of staying in them. The lightning’s strong power kills the parasitic vines (寄生藤蔓) on the trees. It also kills some other trees nearby and they don’t need to fight for food and water.
Dipteryx oleifera (油桃木), a tree in Panama’s forests, has maybe experienced 10 lightning strikes so far. It stays safe and sound, while most of the neighboring trees were killed. If you are in the forest where it is, you’ll know what it is—its huge size and height. “We believe the trees in Panama’s forests have five strikes on average (平均). But, you know, some of them surely get far more times.” Evan Gora, a forest expert said.
How long do these trees live in the forests People can’t know how old these trees are in tropical forests because they don’t form rings that keep growing. Researchers guess many of the trees would be hundreds, or maybe even more than 1,000 years old.
What can we learn from the study The hardest things can turn into good things, can they

A.They’re not often hit by lightning.

A.They win better living conditions.

In Harbin, China, the Snow and Ice Festival starts in January and lasts until March. Artists cut ice from the Songhua River and build tall sculptures (雕塑) that are lit with colorful lights. By late December, visitors come to see this icy world filled with ice works of art and shining buildings. The beauty surprises them, although it’s very cold!
In Quebec, Canada, there’s an amazing Ice Hotel that is made of 2,300 ice pieces and 15,000 tons of snow! People love staying in its icy rooms for a special winter experience.
Even kids in Sweden can enjoy making snow lanterns (灯笼). They first make large snowballs and then put candles (蜡烛) inside to create warm lights. These simple lanterns light up the dark winter nights.
