“Every life is a boat, the dream is the boat sail.” Every child has a dream of what they want to be. When Renee Butts was little, her dream was to become a volunteer fire fighter because her father was one. Sadly, when she was 14, her beloved father died and she was never able to do volunteer work with him. However, Renee’s story didn’t end there. She was determined and never gave up, which makes for a good firefighter.
Now Renee is a member of the Carmel Fire Department, where she is required to be an Emergency Medical Technician. She should also be ready to deal with any emergency, like fighting a fire, dealing with a car accident or helping someone who’s sick. Sometimes she is in the driver’s seat or using the water pump. Renee works nine to eleven days a month on 24-hour shifts. She also has a family to care for, as her husband is also a busy fire fighter. Dealing with housework and working so much can show her great determination.
When I asked Renee what the best part of her job was, she replied, “Helping people and saving lives.” I think that shows signs of being a true hero. She’s always willing to do anything for anyone in need. Renee says that her job is frightening at times, but extremely exciting. “The worst part of my job is that I see death. Actually, sometimes people die in the accident, for which I am very sorry.” With 140 people in her station, Renee is one of the only three women, but that doesn’t bother her. She says everyone can get a fair shot and do the same jobs.
I was inspired by this because I knew I would be very scared to do her job and didn’t know if I could handle seeing people die. We would never live without people like her who have the courage to risk their lives. Renee’s determination rubs off on me and makes me believe that I can do anything.

Cats, unlike dogs, can be prickly (易怒的) characters that often seem cold, distant and sometimes even totally rude. But new research from animal behaviour scientists in the UK has found the blame can fall on the person not the animal.
While most dogs will shower any person with warmth, cats are harder to please and have a few more rules before they warm to a person. For example, cats have “red areas” where they hate to be touched, which include the base of their tail and the stomach. Attempts to stroke (轻抚) these regions will immediately get their back up. However, they have “green areas” too, such as the regions at the base of the ears and under the chin.
The new study, published in the journal Scientific Reports, found that self-appointed “cat people” are more likely to touch the red areas, making the animal feel uncomfortable. And people who had lived with cats for several years were also found to not give cats enough independence, with their “hand-on” way robbing the pets of their freedom.
Some 120 people of varying cat exposure (暴露) were gathered for the study. A person was left in a room and three cats, one after another, were let in to play for five minutes each. The person was told to wait for the cat to come to them but was then left to their own devices when it came to fussing over (过于体贴), engaging with or cuddling (搂抱) the cat.
Researchers found that participants who had lived with cats were likely to be overbearing (专横的) while the most experienced owners also were more likely to stroke cats in “yellow areas”, such as the tail, legs and along their backs, which are less preferred areas than the face, for example.
Lead researcher Dr. Lauren Finka, a cat behavioral expert, said, “Shelters should avoid discriminating against potential adopters with no previous cat ownership experience, because they may make fantastic cat guardians.”
28. What can be learned from the new research in paragraph 1
A.Cats tend to be not as warm as dogs.
B.Dogs tend to be prickly characters.
C.The animal itself is to blame for its bad behavior.
D.Humans should be blamed for cats’ unfriendly behavior.
29. Which areas of cats will probably make them uncomfortable when touched
A.Green areas
B.Red areas.
C.Yellow areas.
D.White areas.
30. What did the researchers find about the most experienced owners in the study
A.They gave the pets enough freedom.
B.They were more likely to stroke cats’ tail.
C.They disliked stroking the cats’ face gently.
D.They realized their pets likes and dislikes.
31. What would be the best title for the text
A.Why Cats Hate People Who Love Them
B.Why Cats Like Independence and Freedom
C.Why People Take Interest in Adopting Cats
D.Why People Are Fond of Petting Cats

Artificial intelligence (AI) is playing an increasingly important role in the restoration of Dunhuang murals (壁画). Dunhuang Mogao Grottoes, located in Gansu Province, are home to more than 45,000 square meters of murals, some of which date back over 1,600 years. However, these precious artworks are facing threats from natural aging, climate change, and human activities.
A team of researchers from Tsinghua University has developed an AI-based system to assist in mural restoration. The system first uses high-resolution cameras to capture detailed images of the murals. Then, AI algorithms analyze the images to identify damaged areas, such as cracks, fading, and peeling. “AI can quickly and accurately detect even the smallest damages that are difficult for human eyes to spot,” said Professor Chen, the leader of the research team.
After identifying the damaged areas, the AI system provides restoration suggestions based on historical data and the style of the murals. For example, if a color has faded, the AI can recommend the most appropriate color to match the original. The system also helps restorers simulate the restoration effect before actual work begins, which reduces the risk of mistakes.
“The AI system has greatly improved the efficiency and accuracy of mural restoration,” Professor Chen said. “What used to take restorers months to complete can now be done in a few weeks with the help of AI.” However, Professor Chen also pointed out that AI is only an assistant tool. “Human restorers still play a crucial role in making final decisions, as restoration requires not only technical skills but also a deep understanding of the cultural and historical background of the murals.”
Some experts are concerned about the over-reliance on AI in cultural heritage restoration. “We should not let AI replace human judgment,” said Dr. Li, a cultural heritage expert. “The value of cultural heritage lies not only in its appearance but also in the human emotions and craftsmanship behind it.”
32. What is the main threat to Dunhuang murals mentioned in the text
A.Lack of research funds.
B.Insufficient restoration technology.
C.Natural aging and human activities.
D.Lack of professional restorers.
33. What is the first step of the AI-based restoration system
A.Analyzing the damaged areas.
B.Capturing detailed images of the murals.
C.Providing restoration suggestions.
D.Simulating the restoration effect.
34. Why is human involvement still crucial in mural restoration
A.AI cannot detect small damages.
B.AI is too expensive to use widely.
C.Restoration requires cultural and historical understanding.
D.Human restorers work faster than AI.
35. What is Dr. Li’s attitude towards the use of AI in mural restoration
A.Fully supportive.
B.Strongly opposed.
C.Cautious.
D.Indifferent.

An Amazing Chinese Festival
My favourite traditional Chinese festival is the Mid-Autumn Festival, which falls on the 15th day of the eighth lunar month.
On that day, families gather together for a big dinner. After the meal, we sit outdoors, admire the bright full moon and enjoy delicious mooncakes. Mooncakes stand for family reunion.
The festival carries great meaning. It reminds us to value family love and cherish the time spent with relatives. Whenever I celebrate it, I feel warm and peaceful. It is truly an amazing Chinese festival full of love.
