László Krasznahorkai, a Hungarian writer, is the winner of the 2025 Nobel Prize in Literature. He was awarded the prize in recognition of his literary works that explore the depth of human nature. Krasznahorkai’s unique writing style makes his works stand out. Ocean litter is a major environmental problem around the world. To rise to this challenge, a research team at the Technical University of Munich (TUM) has now developed an autonomous (自动) diving robot that can discover and collect litter. It uses an AI system to analyze objects with ultrasound (超声波) and cameras, picks them up and brings them to the surface.
The entire system consists of an unmanned service boat with a small underwater search robot and the diving robot. The service boat supplies the underwater robots with power and data by cable (电缆) and uses ultrasound to map the seabed. After a search robot scans the seabed, the diving robot dives to the rubbish, collects it and puts it into a floating waste container.
Equipped with a camera and sonar, the system can identify rubbish even in dark and unclear water. Since hardly any image material is available for underwater objects that could help to train the search robot, the team labeled (标记) more than 7,000 pictures to teach the AI to tell rubbish from natural objects. After recognizing waste, the AI displays it in 3D to determine how to grasp (抓取) the object safely and firmly.
The diving robot’s four-fingered hand can use a force of 4,000 newtons when grasping objects weighing up to 250 kg. However, special sensors enable it to gauge how much force it can use without causing damage. For example, this prevents glass bottles from breaking into pieces.
Tested in the Port of Marseille in France and the Port of Hamburg in Germany, the system is expected to be widely used between 2030 and 2033. Project manager Bart De Schutter believes this technology could be game-changing in addressing ocean litter.

In Japan, AI systems check early signs of earthquakes and give warnings seconds before shaking arrives, enough time for people to take cover. Google’s Crisis Response uses AI to map damaged areas and direct aid within hours of a disaster.
Drones fly into dangerous areas — burning forests, flooded cities, broken buildings — to take clear images, locate survivors, and check damage without risking human lives. Robotic dogs and snake-like robots move through the remains to find trapped people. Underwater drones examine damaged ports and oil rigs after storms.
Modern warning systems push real-time warnings to smartphones, radios, and TVs. In the U.S., the Wireless Emergency Alerts (WEA) system sends tsunami, hurricane, and wildfire warnings to every mobile phone in a danger area. In India, the National Disaster Management Authority uses SMS and app warnings to reach remote villages, cutting the warning delays (延误) from hours to minutes.
Scientists agree technology cannot stop natural disasters — but it can significantly reduce their impact. “We used to react to disasters; now we predict and prepare,” says Dr. Elena, a climate scientist at the University of California. “Technology gives us the time to act.” As climate change increases disaster frequency, these tools will become even more important for protecting lives and livelihoods worldwide.
