As Elizabeth Stone once said, “Making the decision to have a child is momentous. It is to decide to have your heart go walking around outside your body.” You send your child off to school and hope that the world treats the child kindly because when he or she hurt, you hurt. The mom called to inform Soogia that their kids had been sharing lunch with each other.

That may seem like a small thing to some, but the small gesture healed a little bit of Soogia’s inner child. Growing up as a Korean kid in California, Soogia had different experiences from her children.
“I guess I just never thought that my kids would be the generation of kids that could go to school and not just proudly eat, but share their food with other kids that were just so open and accepting to it,” Soogia said through tears. “They don’t sit there eating their food alone, feeling ashamed and wishing that their fried rice was a bagel instead or something like that. And I know, it sounds so small and it sounds so stupid, but knowing that their experience at school is so different from mine in such a positive way is just so hopeful.”
Soogia’s tearful video pulled at the heartstrings of her viewers who shared their thoughts in the comments.
“These Gen Alpha babies really are a different, kinder generation. I love them so much,” someone revealed.

The family, wing length and wing color of tropical butterflies all influence their ability to withstand rising temperatures, say researchers at the University of Cambridge. They believe this could help identify species whose survival is under threat from climate change.
Butterflies use two strategies to fight against changing air temperatures: thermal buffering (热缓冲) — adaptive behavior like flying to a shaded area to maintain a steady body temperature, and thermal tolerance — dependence on physiological (生理学的) mechanism to prevent overheating. Both of these strategies are needed to deal with climate change. However, deforestation leading to a potential lack of forest cover means tropical butterflies may have to rely on physiological method.
Researchers cooperated with the Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute (STRI) to study thermoregulation (体温调节) strategies of tropical butterflies. To assess thermal buffering abilities, scientists collected data from multiple habitats in Panama. Equipped with hand-held nets, they took the temperature of over 1,000 butterflies and compared each to that of the surrounding air. To assess thermal tolerance, at STRI Gamboa facilities, a few butterflies were placed in a glass jar within a water bath with a steadily increasing temperature.
The results showed butterflies with large wings tended to have higher thermal buffering ability, but a lower thermal tolerance. Butterflies with dark wings were found to tolerate heat better than those with pale wings. Notably, butterflies from the Lycaenidae family with small, bright wings had the poorest thermal buffering and thermal tolerance abilities.
Lead author Esme Ashe-Jepson said, “As temperatures continue to rise, and forests get smaller and further apart because of deforestation, butterflies which rely on their surroundings to avoid high temperatures may not be able to travel between forests, or deal with increasingly common heatwaves.” If temperatures continue to rise alongside deforestation and loss of cool microclimates, there is a very real threat that we could lose many species in this family.

We care about what other people think of us. The reality is that allowing others’ opinions to guide our choices and sense of self-worth can do us a great deal of hurt and harm.
FOPO, in short, is the fear of other people’s opinions. As human beings, we’ve been hardwired for millennia to care about what the people we care about, interact with, and seek to please think of us. Without strong social connections, our ancestors could not have survived. Today, though we no longer live with ever-present threats to our very existence, we continue to measure our capabilities and self-worth in relation to what the people in our lives — and increasingly, on our social media pages — think of us.
A June 2025 article in the New York Post described FOMO (the fear of missing out) as a hidden epidemic that “most people don’t know they’re partaking in”. Like FOMO, FOPO is a relatively new term that describes the dark side of our very human need and concern for validation (认可), inclusion, and acceptance from others. In a word, we base our self-worth on external conditions.
In the book The First Rule of Mastery: Stop Worrying About What People Think of You, Dr. Michael Gervais shared his perspectives on what makes our fear of other people’s opinions so harmful that it makes us “play it safe, and play it small, to avoid failure, rather than go for it”. Moreover, he cautions that caring too much about other people’s opinions can lead to disconnection from our inner strengths and sense of purpose.
The reality is that we all struggle to some extent with concerns and fears of negative judgments of others. It is critical that we should strive to shift our focus away from other people’s opinions to achieving our goals and realizing our own potential. We owe it to ourselves to focus on our goals and to strive to live our lives on our own terms, free of the fears of judgments of others.
