Mount Qomolangma is the tallest mountain in the world. So climbing it is difficult and even deadly. One of the dangers is altitude sickness (高原病). It makes climbers feel sick as they move higher. Altitude sickness happens because oxygen (氧气) in the air gets less as people climb up. Even at the bottom of the mountain, some people really have trouble with the low level of oxygen. Many climbers have made it to the top of Qomolangma, but some couldn’t get back down safely. There are lots of other dangers to climbers. Avalanches (雪崩) can sweep down the mountain almost daily. Storms and high winds may blow climbers off the mountain.
It would be almost impossible to climb Mount Qomolangma without the help of the Sherpas—the people who live in the mountains near Qomolangma. Their ancestors (祖先) have lived there for hundreds of years. And they have special red blood cells (红细胞). These cells carry more oxygen than other people’s cells. This helps them a lot in Mount Qomolangma’s low-oxygen conditions. The Sherpas are excellent climbers and have great power and strength. They often carry heavy things for climbing teams and get paid. For the Sherpas, Qomolangma is a very special place.
People have climbed Mount Qomolangma about 6,000 times. But hundreds of people have died trying to reach the top. Although some people are not mountain climbers, they still find this amazing mountain fascinating.
