Yamilée Toussaint has always been passionate about two seemingly unrelated things: dancing and mathematics. When she studied mechanical engineering at MIT, she was also head of the dance team. It was there that she saw for the first time that black women were not pursuing education in STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics). She was one of only two black women in her major, an experience that highlighted the need for greater diversity in these career fields.
While teaching math at a high school in eastern Brooklyn in 2008, Toussaint encountered many students who had negative views of math. This motivated her to find a way to change young people’s mindset, especially for girls of color, and empower them to embrace STEM.
In 2012, she created STEM From Dance, a nonprofit program that uses dance—a confidence-building and culturally-relevant strategy—to grow the number of girls of color with STEM degrees. Most of these girls don’t dream of being scientists or engineers, not because they can’t, but because of a lack of confidence, preparation and awareness of STEM careers.
Rather than teach dance and STEM separately, the program combines the two. Through dance, the girls are able to create an atmosphere that feels comfortable. Working in small groups, the girls design dance routines that include STEM elements and also create songs through computer science. Through the hands-on projects, the girls begin to see themselves as programmers, engineers, and innovators.
On the final day of the program, the girls perform in front of family and friends. For Toussaint, this is an important day she hopes all of the girls carry with them. “We want them to remember they are capable for doing things in STEM,” Toussaint said. “So, when they face hard math problems, they’re reminded, ‘I can do hard things.’ I believe the solution to some of the world’s most pressing problems relies on these girls being in the room because they have a different set of life experiences.”

Contrails (航迹云) produced by aircraft engines are thought to cause more warming than the carbon dioxide planes emit. A trial involving thousands of flights between the US and Europe has found planes produce fewer contrails if they follow flight paths recommended by an AI to reduce their global warming impact.
Dinesh Sanekommu at Google and his colleagues have used an AI contrail-forecasting tool to give routing advice in a randomized control trial of more than 2400 real American Airlines flights. The trial involved flights heading eastward from the US to Europe and ran from January to May 2025. The direction was only one-way because these flights could take place at night, which is when contrails have a clearer warming effect. During the day, contrails can have a cooling effect because they reflect sunlight into space.
The flight routes between two cities were randomly assigned to two groups. For the first group, air traffic dispatchers (调度员) had an option in their flight-planning software to pick an AI-optimized (优化的), low-contrail route, but for the second, no alternative was suggested. Actually, only 112 out of 1232 flights took the alternative paths because of operational concerns, such as cost or safety. According to an AI analysis of satellite imagery of flight paths in the first group, there was a 62% lower amount of contrails for flights that took the contrail-optimized routes. When all flights in this group were included, the overall reduction in contrail formation was 11.6%, compared with the second group. The team estimated that the flights’ warming effect was reduced by 13.7% in the entire group given a suggested route and 69.3% in the flights that took the optimized routes.
“The 62% reduction is unlikely to have happened by chance,” says Edward Gryspeerdt at Imperial College London, “You can’t just scale this up to be a 60% reduction in contrails from every flight everywhere, but even a 10% reduction is still a non-negligible effect.”

Regular renting has become a modern ritual (习惯) for Lin Rong, a young professional in Shenzhen. Every couple of weeks, with a few taps on his smartphone, he has a DJI drone delivered to his door. Lin is not alone. In late January, newspaper China Youth Daily surveyed about 1,300 young people. More than three quarters said they now prefer flexibility over permanent ownership. Digital devices and outdoor gear (装备) were the most rented items, accounting for 42.5 percent and 38.9 percent of rentals respectively. Zhu Di, a researcher at the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, views this as a calculated departure from the traditional obsession with owning. “It is a more mature lifestyle,” said Zhu, “This generation is not just saving money; they are rewriting the rules of the marketplace to fit a life that refuses to be weighed down.”
This shift from owning to renting has been fueled by the rise of specialized online platforms and a nationwide credit system, which lowered the barrier for renters. Meanwhile, a growing number of businesses have shifted their focus from selling to renting, and the variety of rentable items is exploding. The impact was immediate. Suddenly, students could rent professional cameras for graduation photos, travelers could pick up outdoor gear without paying much deposits (押金), and tech enthusiasts could try out the latest digital devices at minimal risk.
