Feasts for Museum-goers
Museums have become the latest must-see destinations for both locals and tourists alike all over China and let’s take a quick look at what some of them have in store for enthusiastic museum-goers.
Gentle View
Paintings and sculptures from across the country are on display at the ongoing exhibition, Colors, at the Shandong Art Museum in Jinan, Shandong province. The event is held in celebration of International Women’s Day, which falls on Friday. The Shandong Artists Association launched the annual exhibition in 2017 to encourage women artists and to offer them a platform for their talents and their unique ways of viewing the world.
Cultural Peak
Ink artist Huang Binhong (1865 — 1955), considered one of the major figures of modern Chinese art, spent a lifetime carrying on his country’s cultural heritage while also maintaining a modern spirit and a universal outlook. Immortal Legacy is an ongoing exhibition at the Art Museum of Beijing Fine Art Academy that sheds light on Huang’s belief in cultural tradition. Timeless Beauty
In celebration of Chinese New Year, Immortal Brushwork of Danqing, the Tianjin Museum staged a long-term exhibition starting in early February, bringing together dozens of paintings ranging from the Song (960 — 1279) to Qing (1644 — 1911) dynasties. Examples include a portrait of an aristocratic woman by Leng Mei, a pioneering figure of Chinese portraiture in the 17th and 18th centuries. Leng’s paintings successfully convey the atmosphere and situations his subjects experienced, revealing their moods and emotions.
Calligraphic Sage
Hailed as the “modern sage of caoshu script”, Lin Sanzhi is recognized as one of the leading calligraphers of the 20th century. My Admiration of Ancient Masters, an exhibition at the Anhui Art Museum, reviews Lin’s efforts in calligraphy, poetry and Chinese painting through which he built a connection with the spiritual worlds of past artists and sought new dimensions for the art form. A woman in Brazil kept awake during brain surgery moved doctors to tears when she began to sing a song she wrote herself. And the moment is unlike anything we’ve seen before!
Doctors diagnosed (诊断) 45-year-old Maria Filomena da Costa with a brain tumor (肿瘤). It needed to be removed, but the location of the mass made things tricky. Removing the tumor without impacting Maria’s speech and cognition wouldn’t be easy. As a result, doctors determined Maria would need to be kept awake during the brain surgery! “There was a big risk Maria would lose her speech and it was important that she talked to the team during the surgery,” neurosurgeon Carlos Rocha explained.
Brain surgery is scary enough. But needless to say, this particular operation was terrifying. And Maria admits she found the idea of surgeons working on her brain while she was awake was frightening. So, the team delayed the operation until Maria was psychologically prepared for everything involved.
When it came time to operate, doctors used anesthesia to keep Maria “slightly sleepy,” but still able to speak and respond. The team planned to quiz her on colors, names, etc. “We had prearranged to do speech mapping with electrical stimuli (刺激物) to the brain and tests during surgery asking her to name objects and colors, read and talk,” Carlos said. But Maria surprised everyone when she started singing a song written by herself as doctors began removing the tumor!
Maria’s actions completely stunned the doctors. Not only did it provide guarantee for the doctors that Maria’s speech would be just fine, but it moved the team in a powerful way. “There were a number of professionals involved in this procedure and it was an emotional experience. Everyone couldn’t stop talking about her courage,” anesthesiologist Paula Fialho said. The 8-hour surgery went well, and within only 4 days, Maria headed home from the hospital. She’s walking, talking, and is well on her way to a full recovery!

There’s a continuing controversy (争议) over whether electric vehicles should produce sounds to let the blind and other pedestrians (行人) know they’re on the scene. Some think those sounds should be standardized — like the “beep, beep, beep” of heavy machinery backing up, so you’ll think “something heavy is coming this way” when you hear it — and some think any sound will do.
This is a serious subject. Plug-in hybrid cars (电混动力车) and battery electric vehicles are super-quiet, and a study at the University of California, Riverside concludes that people listening to recordings on headphones can hear a regular gas car coming from 28 feet away, but a hybrid in battery mode only when it’s 7 feet away.
In response, the European Union has put new rules into play: all new electric vehicle models must have a sound-producing device, which sounds like a traditional engine. Starting in 2021, all new electric vehicles of any model will need the Acoustic Vehicle Alerting System or AVAS. That sound will come into play when the car is traveling backwards or when it’s traveling at less than 12 miles an hour — speeds at which cars are more likely to be mixing with pedestrians .
That’s a nice start, say representatives for the blind, but more is needed. “We’re calling on the government to take this announcement further by requiring AVAS on all existing electric and hybrid vehicles and ensuring drivers have them switched on,” John Welsman, guide dog owner and Guide Dogs staff member, said in a statement.
Drivers in most cases have the ability to shut off the device when needed. My guess is that they will eventually be standardized so your mind will automatically register “electric car” when you hear it. And that’s probably a good thing to reduce the mayhem (混乱) on the roads.

Cats aren’t known for their sensitivity. But a new study published in the journal Applied Animal Behaviour Science suggests that our feline friends may care more about us and other pets than we give them credit for. What it found was that cats responded to the loss in a way that looked strikingly similar to mourning.
To dig deeper into this phenomenon, a team led by psychologist Jennifer Vonk and her co-author Brittany Greene embarked on a comprehensive investigation. They surveyed 412 cat owners or caregivers, asking them how their cat reacted after the death of another pet in the house. Participants used a five-point scale to indicate changes in the cats’ behaviours in the days and weeks after the death. The recorded behaviours were numerous: altered sleep, eating and playing habits, increased vocalisation, spending more time alone, seeking human attention by sitting or lying near them, showing fear or curiosity, interacting with remaining pets, grooming changes, and even searching for the lost pet by sniffing its usual spots.
Respondents were also asked to describe the relationships between the cat and the deceased pet, as well as their own bonds and grief. This indicated that cats form connections and respond emotionally to loss.
It seems cats get sad when a companion dies, though it’s hard to prove this. Some cats changed their eating and playing habits. Others sought more human interaction. And some even searched the house for their missing family members, lingering around the places where they used to play or sleep. Still, Jennifer cautions that there could be other reasons for the changes in the behaviour besides cats’ grief. They might be eating more because they now have more access to the food bowl, or they might be playing less because they no longer have a playmate.
But, she says, even if they do experience grief, it’s probably different from the kind that humans feel. It’s more likely they’re noticing that something has changed in their social environment, and they are responding to the change with feelings of fear or anxiety.
