On a quiet summer morning at Mares Pond in Cape Cod, something unusual is happening. Fifteen women in their sixties and seventies are putting on swimming suit and preparing to dive (潜水). But they’re not here just to swim-they’re on a special mission to clean the pond.
One by one, they jump into the water. Soon, shouts of “Found something!” break the silence. A swimmer surfaces holding bright blue children’s goggles (护目镜). Another pulls up a fishing line. The most exciting find is a long piece of metal that takes several women to lift. By lunchtime, their collection includes beer cans, plastic items, and even a brick.
They belong to the Old Ladies Against Underwater Garbage (OLAUG), a non-profit organization started in 2017 by Susan Baur, a 67-year-old retired professor. Susan first noticed the waste while swimming in ponds for exercise. “I used to follow the beer cans as my targets to add meaning to my exercise, ” she laughs. What began as a personal project soon grew when friends asked to join.
The women say cleaning ponds is more than just good exercise. “It’s like discovering a secret world,” says Robin Melavalin. “We see fish, turtles, and beautiful plants — things most people never notice. While some question why they call themselves “old ladies” or don’t include men, Susan explains, “We want to show what older women can do. Age doesn’t have to stop you from helping the environment.”
New members are often surprised by what they achieve. Many swim further or lift heavier objects than they thought possible. “You should see their faces when they come back,” Susan says. “They’re tired but so proud.” For these women, cleaning ponds has become about more than cleaning waste — it’s about friendship, purpose, and proving you’re never too old to make a difference.
4. What are the seniors doing in the pond
A.They are teaching others to swim.
B.They are removing rubbish from ponds.
C.They are studying underwater plants.
D.They are competing in swimming races.
5. Why was OLAUG set up

Scientists in Australia thought they had developed a new tracking device (追踪设备) to help them monitor magpies (喜鹊), but these birds had other ideas.
Australian magpies are medium-sized black and white birds from the same bird “family” as crows and bluejays. They are known to be quite clever. They live in groups of up to 12 birds and work together to defend the area they live in.
The purpose of the scientists’ experiment was to learn more about how far they travel each day and how their social behaviors are influenced by sex, age, and rank. Besides, the scientists were eager to test the newly developed tracking device.
Most trackers are too big to fit on small and medium sized birds, and small trackers tend to be limited when it comes to data storage, battery life, and reusability. The new tracker, weighing less than 1 gram, was designed to overcome these problems. Attached to a backpack-like harness (背带) which could not be removed easily, the device can re-charge wirelessly and transmit (传输) data wirelessly.
The scientists placed trackers on five magpies using their special harnesses. Things started to fall apart almost immediately. Within 10 minutes of fitting the final tracker, an adult female without a tracker tried to remove the harness from a younger bird and eventually succeeded. This pattern was repeated in the following hours, and by the third day none of the birds had trackers anymore.
Scientists refer to this as “rescue behavior,” and it happens when a helper tries to free another individual in trouble and with no obvious direct benefit to the rescuing individual. They think this is the first time rescue behavior has been reported for Australian magpies. However, they aren’t sure if the same individual removed all of the harnesses or if others offered help.
The team didn’t get the data they wanted, but their experiment still produced interesting results. That’s how science works sometimes. The scientists need to try again to figure out a good way to track these clever birds.
8. What can we learn about Australian magpies from paragraph 2
A.They have good team spirit.
B.They are smarter than crows.
C.They are hardly found.
D.They learn from each other.
9. What is a big advantage of the new tracking device
A.It doesn’t need to be re-charged.
B.It can be applied to all birds.
C.It has limited data storage.
D.It is lighter in weight.
10. What happened to the magpies after the trackers were attached to them
A.They couldn’t fly as normal.
B.They were warned by other magpies.
C.They helped each other to remove the trackers.
D.They were driven out of their home by other adult magpies.
11. Which can be the best title for the text
A.Climate Change Makes Magpies More Difficult
B.Magpies Teach Scientists an Unexpected Lesson
C.The Trackers Help Magpies Get Used to Nature
D.Magpies Are Adjusting to the Trackers on Their Bodies
D
Most people visit national parks expecting to see natural wonders like forests, waterfalls, and animals. What they don’t expect are piles of trash left by tourists who don’t think about how such waste hurts the environment. Now, there’s an app to not only track this waste but also get rid of it.
According to Travel + Leisure, the community group 5 Gyres Institute has developed an app called TrashBlitz that will record trash thrown away in national parks. By noting what kinds of trash are found, the goal is to encourage people to cut down on waste that pollutes the parks.
If you’re walking through Yellowstone and find a place with lots of empty bottles or wrappers, you can use the TrashBlitz app to write down where the trash is and any clean-up work you do. This data can then be used to create plans for policy changes, including possible laws and activities to tell visitors to clean up and use things that can be recycled or used again.
The group’s 2024 clean-up effort had 259 events at 58 sites, like Olympic National Park. The group collected information as well as reports from volunteers. Based on the data, they found the biggest problem is plastic, which makes up about 77% of all reported trash. Food wrappers are the most common type of plastic litter, but soda bottles, wet wipes, and bottle caps are also usual. Paper is the second most found trash, and metals and fabrics make up the rest.
“I found small colorful pieces of plastic in Biscayne National Park,” a volunteer said. “I also saw lots of bags, cups, and takeout boxes broken into tiny pieces along the roads to Everglades National Park. The smaller plastic gets, the more easily it can enter the food chain and the harder it is to remove from nature.”
TrashBlitz isn’t just for parks: It works for local clean-ups in communities too. Recent reports include surveys in Los Angeles, Denver, and Austin. Their work is supported by laws: In 2024, the U. S. Department of the Interior said it would not allow people to use single-use plastics in parks.
12. Why was the app invented
A.To help reuse trash in national parks.
B.To solve trash problems in national parks.
C.To find volunteers to clean national parks.
D.To punish those who litter in national parks.
13. What is the data collected by the app used for
A.Helping make new rules.
B.Educating volunteers.
C.Creating plans for volunteers.
D.Deciding where to put trash.
14. What does the data from the group’s 2024 clean-up effort show
A.The challenges of cleaning up trash.
B.The increase of all kinds of trash.
C.The effects and reuse of trash.
D.The types and percentages of trash.
15. What does the last paragraph say about the app
A.It has improved its system recently.
B.It often surveys user’s experiences.
C.It functions well in many places.
D.It is waiting for laws to recognize it.

It was a sunny Saturday afternoon when a family of four decided to explore the woods near their home. With their camping equipment, they embarked on a much-anticipated trip in the nearby woods, full of excitement.
Upon arrival, the parents set up the tent while their two children, Max and Emma, wandered around and looked for fun. They were especially thrilled, laughter echoing through the woods. Max, the big brother, proposed to go deeper into the woods and explore more. Emma followed.
As they walked along the narrow path, chatting and laughing, they suddenly heard a strange noise coming from a thick bush. Feeling a little bit scared, Emma came closer to her brother. Then, they noticed another sound. Even with the scare and nervousness, curiosity got the better of them. They carefully approached the source of that sound.
To their big surprise, they found a small, injured fox lying there, making some heartbroken sounds. Taking a closer look, Max found that one of her legs was bleeding, and she looked weak and scared. Emma’ s heart ached at the sight of the poor creature. “We can’t just leave her here. Let’s do something,” she begged, looking determined. Max hesitated for a while and nodded in agreement.
Emma suggested coming back to the camping site and called their parents for help. But they worried the fox could be attacked by other bigger animals. Then Max decided to take the fox back. They knew they had to be extremely careful, not scaring the fox and not causing further injury.
Slowly, Max made his first attempt. He took off his coat and tried to gently place it over the fox. The fox, sensing Max’s approach, struggled to run away but failed due to her bleeding leg. Max did another try. This time, he succeeded. He covered the fox carefully with his coat. The fox still whined(哀鸣) sadly, but didn’t run away. With great care, they lifted the fox and carried her back.

第三部分 写作(读后续写 高分范文)
范文(152词,满分水准,贴合题意、逻辑连贯、句式丰富)
Once they arrived, they quickly called their parents. Seeing the weak and bleeding fox, the parents showed great sympathy immediately. Their father gently examined its injured leg and confirmed that the wound was not life-threatening. The family quickly cleaned the wound with clean water and covered it with simple bandages they had prepared for camping. To make the fox feel safe, they placed it in a soft box lined with their clean towel and offered it some fresh water and fruit. The fox gradually calmed down and stopped whining, looking at the family with its timid eyes.
A few days later, the fox’s leg was fully healed. It became energetic again and could jump and walk freely. The family decided to send it back to the woods where it belonged, for wild animals should live freely in nature instead of staying with humans. They returned to the forest together and put the fox down gently. The fox lingered for a moment, looking back at Max and Emma as if to express its gratitude, before disappearing into the thick woods. This warm experience taught the children to cherish every life and always be kind to nature.
范文亮点:情节贴合原文、衔接自然;使用非谓语、状语从句、固定句型;主题升华贴合人与自然、善待生命,符合高一阅卷评分标准。
