A Happy Volunteer Experience
Last month, our class took part in a volunteer activity in the old people’s home in our
neighborhood. It was my first time to be a volunteer, and I learned a lot from this meaningful
experience.
We set off at eight o’clock on Saturday morning by school bus. Before we left, our head
teacher told us some rules: we should speak softly, be polite to the elderly and never make
noisy sounds to disturb their rest. When we arrived at the old people’s home, the gatekeeper
welcomed us warmly. The building was clean and quiet, with many green plants around the
第 2页共 10页
yard. Some old people were sitting on chairs enjoying the sunshine, while others were
chatting with their partners.
We divided ourselves into three groups. Group One helped the workers clean the rooms,
sweep the floors and water the flowers. Group Two put on small shows for the elderly. My
deskmate Lily sang old popular songs that the elders loved, three boys performed short funny
sketches, and I played the guitar while one grandma sang along with me. Group Three
chatted with the lonely elders. I sat beside Grandpa Wang, who was seventy-eight years old.
He used to be a history teacher. He told us many interesting stories about his young days and
taught us some good ways to memorize historical knowledge. He said most of his children
worked in other cities, so he felt lonely sometimes.
We prepared some fruits and hand-made paper cards as small gifts. Every old person got
a card with our best wishes on it. An hour before we left, an old grandma made sweet rice
cakes for us. They tasted wonderful.
When we went back to school in the late afternoon, everyone felt tired but joyful. I
realized that the elderly need not only material care but also spiritual company. Spending
time talking with them can bring them great warmth. I decide to take part in volunteer
activities once a month from now on. Helping others really makes myself full of happiness.

How to Develop Good Reading Habits
第 3页共 10页
Reading is very important for middle school students. It can open our eyes, improve our
vocabulary and writing skills, and calm our busy minds. However, many seventh graders don’
t have good reading habits. They either read casually for several minutes every day or only
read storybooks for fun. Here are several practical suggestions to help you develop excellent
reading habits.
First, make a fixed reading timetable. You’d better choose a spare time period every
single day, such as thirty minutes after finishing homework every evening or twenty minutes
after getting up in the morning. Don’t put off reading because of tiredness or entertainment
like short videos. Fixed time can turn reading into a daily routine naturally, just like brushing
teeth and washing faces.
Second, pick suitable reading materials. Don’t choose books that are too difficult with
plenty of new words, which will make you lose confidence quickly. Meanwhile, don’t only
read comic novels. You can divide your reading list into three parts: popular storybooks to
keep interest, biographies of famous people to learn spirits, and science popularization books
to widen your knowledge. Our school library has more than 3,000 kinds of books, and you
can borrow two books each week for free.
Third, take simple notes while reading. You don’t need to write long articles. You can
underline beautiful sentences, write down new words in your notebook, or mark your feelings
beside paragraphs. These marks will help you review contents easily later. Many students
find it helpful to keep a reading diary to record book names and their short ideas.
Fourth, share reading gains with partners. You can join the school reading club or
discuss books with your classmates after class. When you explain your opinions to others,
you will understand the book more deeply. Our English teacher always holds a book sharing
meeting every two weeks in our class.
Good habits need at least twenty-one days to form. Stick to these ways, and reading will
become your lifelong hobby instead of a boring task.

Do you know about body language It is silent but powerful. It includes eye contact,
facial expressions, gestures and body postures. When we communicate with others, words
take up only 35 percent of the whole information, while body language takes up 65 percent. It
works everywhere, but some gestures have different meanings in different countries. If you
ignore cultural differences, you may make embarrassing mistakes when travelling abroad.
In most European countries and China, nodding heads up and down means agreement,
and shaking heads means disagreement. However, in Bulgaria, nodding stands for “no”, and
shaking heads means “yes”. Many tourists once misunderstood local people because of this
difference.
Making a “V” shape with index finger and middle finger is widely known as the sign of
victory or peace. But you must pay attention to your palm direction. If your palm faces
inward towards your body in Britain and Australia, this gesture is very rude and impolite, just
like saying bad words.
Putting one thumb up is a common gesture of praise in China, America and Canada. It
means “well done” or “good job”. While in Thailand and Iran, this action is extremely
disrespectful to local people. When you want to ask for a ride on the road in America,
sticking out your thumb is the standard gesture, but never do this in Middle Eastern countries.
Crossing your arms in front of your chest usually shows that you feel defensive or
disagree with others in most cultures. But in Finland, people often cross arms just because
they feel cold instead of showing bad attitudes.
Learning basic body language across cultures is necessary for modern teenagers. Before
visiting foreign countries, it is wise to look up local custom rules first. Proper body language
can help you make more friends and avoid unnecessary troubles during cross-cultural
communication.

Last summer vacation, I wasted lots of time playing games, so my study fell behind.
This time I won’t make the same 48. Plans are easy to make, but carrying them out is difficult.
I will ask my parents to supervise me. When I want to give up, I will 49 myself that a good
vacation plan can make me grow better.
I believe if I keep on doing these things day by day, I will make great 50 in both study
and personal habits when the new term begins. A good summer vacation is not about endless
fun, but about self-improvement. To make the plan clearer, I write all my daily tasks on a
