Nature’s Warnings
When the sky suddenly turns dark and the wind is strong, watch out! A dangerous storm might be coming.Storms are frightening.Watch for flashes of lightning.Listen for thunder. If nature sends these warnings, don’t wait for rain.Act right away to keep safe.
Safety Steps
At the first flash of lightning, quickly get inside a building or a car.Do not go into a shed for protection. It is not closed like a building,so it is not safe.
Even after you are indoors,be careful. It is not smart to go near doors or windows. They can blow in or break.A room with no windows is the safest place to stay.Do not wash your hands during a storm.Do not use anything that runs on electricity, either.Water and electrical lines are like roads for lightning.Even if you really want to play computer games, don’t! It is better to be bored than to get hurt.Try reading a book instead.Reading is more fun than playing computer games during a storm.
If you can’t get to somewhere safe, stay out in the open. You may feel safe under a tree, but that is not a good place to stay.Lightning is pulling toward tall poles and trees.Stay down in an open space and cover your ears to protect them.Loud thunder can damage your hearing.

A tsunami is a huge ocean wave (浪).An earthquake usually causes a tsunami. The biggest tsunami ever hit land on July 9,1958.It happened when an earthquake shook the undersea floor. The 8.0 earthquake shook 40 million cubic yards (立方码) of rocks and ice from a mountain. The landslide (滑坡) fell 3,000 feet and hit the water with terrible force. It caused the huge wave. The wave was more than 1,640 feet (500 meters) high and hit over five square miles of land.It also destroyed millions of trees.
TSUNAMI
There were no towns in the area,so it is different from the terrible tsunami in 2004.More than 200,000 people lost their lives in 2004. ▲ These two unlucky people were on a fishing boat in the bay when the wave arrived.Another boat was carrying Peter and his wife. They jumped into a small boat and some people saved them a few hours later.Jack and his seven-year-old son were on the third boat.Luckily, both of them didn’t die.
For many years, scientists discussed the reasons for the tsunami in 1958.Some scientists said lots of rocks fell into the bay,but it was not enough to cause such a huge wave. They thought that the earthquake itself caused the wave. However,as our understanding of earthquakes and tsunamis improved, most scientists now regard the landslide as the true reason for the wave. But no one argues that the wave is the largest in the world and will keep a long time in the future.

In recent years, there have been many natural disasters caused by human activities, such as floods, earthquakes, forest fires, sandstorms and so on.
When there is a flood, we should get to the high ground and make sure not to walk through the flood water. If an earthquake happens, we can hide under a strong desk and stay away from a window. If a fire happens, we can use a wet towel to cover our mouth and nose. Of course, we should take action to prevent future disasters. We can plant more trees and protect wild animals. We can also share some related information with others.
Hope we can have a better world in the future.
