Climate change could have large impacts on food production across the world. Rising temperatures might boost crop production in cold regions but negatively impact production in warmer areas. Farmers can adjust their practices to a warmer climate in four key ways:

Farmers can change WHAT they plant. This could be an entirely different type of crop: corn instead of wheat. Or a different variety of a specific crop.

Experts modeled many possible adaptation methods — changing one or more than one. The chart below shows the impacts on the output of rice, corn, soybean, sorghum (高粱) and wheat by changing both HOW and WHEN.
These adaptation methods can already go some way to relieve climate pressures in some countries. But, of course, we don’t only care about crop production at the global level. If farmers in particular regions — especially those that are most food-insecure — cannot adapt to climate change, this is still a major problem. So there is more we can do in the future.

I served as a police officer for 20 years, and “protect and serve” was not just a motto but the very core of my identity. Every day brought unpredictable challenges — traffic accidents, missing children cases and community crises — and I thrived on being the person people turned to in their darkest hours. As retirement approached, however, I was consumed by fear. I couldn’t picture who I would be without my badge (警徽) and uniform, or how I would find purpose outside the force.

Microplastics are tiny particles found almost everywhere on the Earth. They exist in rivers, oceans, farm soil, food, drinking water and human bodies. Scientists have long studied their harm to wildlife, nature and human health. However, their influence on global warming has been a less studied question.
A new study in Nature Climate Change shows microplastics in the atmosphere can warm the Earth. Overall, these plastics absorb more heat instead of reflecting it, making them a cause of global warming.
Researchers from Fudan University and Duke University carried out the study. They analysed how microplastics of different colours and sizes interact with sunlight, and used computer simulations (模拟) to track these particles in the air. Colored microplastics absorb far more sunlight than white ones. Their heat absorption rate is nearly 75 times higher than that of plain, colorless particles. The size and age of microplastics also change their ability to take in heat.
Scientists point out microplastics might not be an enormous source of warming compared with cars and trucks, but it’s not trivial either. The yearly warming impact of global microplastic emissions equals the operation of 200 coal-fired power plants for a year. Worse, microplastics can stay in the environment for decades, so their long-term warming influence cannot be ignored.
Researchers stress this study is just a starting point. There are many uncertainties. It is hard to calculate the exact warming effect because microplastics have countless sizes, shapes and colors. Current technology to measure them is still new. Although the findings are reliable, scientists say they need more years of research to draw firm conclusions. Even so, cutting plastic waste is still necessary, as microplastics already damage ecosystems and human health. Their warming effect is another important reason to reduce plastic use worldwide.

In early 2025, a New York auction (拍卖) house sold a large collection of AI-created artworks for over $ 700,000, which was far higher than expected. However, this successful sale caused huge public criticism. More than 6,000 professional artists protested against this event. While the auction house claimed the works showed human creativity in the AI era, critics argued it was an unfair commercial profit based on unpaid human creative work.
Such worries are common among creative workers. A recent UK survey showed over half of novelists fear AI may ruin their careers. Many writers believe their published works have been used illegally to train AI tools, and low-quality AI writing has crowded the creative market. Ordinary audiences also hold mixed opinions: they accept AI as a helpful tool for artists, but refuse to let it replace human creative work entirely.
To further explore people’s attitudes, a neuroaesthetic (神经美学的) researcher carried out three simple experiments with 100 participants each. The research aimed to find out whether people’s knowledge of AI working principles influences their judgment on AI art’s morality and beauty.
In the first experiment, participants viewed AI paintings copied from a famous artist’s impressionist style. Half of them learned the basic AI working process, while the other half received no related information. The results were clear: people who understood AI’s operation thought the profitable AI art was morally wrong, yet they still appreciated its visual beauty. This means technical knowledge affects people’s ethical (伦理的) judgment rather than aesthetic feelings.
The second experiment tested the influence of reputation and success. Even after being told some AI artworks were exhibited and praised, informed participants still did not improve their moral views of AI art. In the final test, researchers measured people’s instant, automatic opinions. The result showed people have no natural bias against AI art.
In conclusion, people’s moral doubt about AI art is learned instead of innate. Transparent (透明的) information about AI’s creation process can help the public, artists and policy makers judge AI art rationally. Though full transparency may bring criticism, it helps build trust and promote the healthy development of AI in the art industry.
