I teach biology at the University of Washington, and I’ve lost count of how many times students come to me with textbooks highlighted in four different colors. “I can tell you’ve done a lot of work,” I say. “You really want to succeed.” Then I have to tell them the hard truth: any more time spent on this after the first time was a waste. They’re shocked. “How is that possible ”
Students have been trained for years to keep reading and rereading, to mark every page until it glows (变得鲜亮). But research on the testing effect shows that people learn more by testing themselves than by rereading. The idea is simple: read a little, then test yourself. The problem is that many students don’t know how to study this way.
So I model it in class. Every five minutes I throw out a question on the material we have just talked about, and I can see them start to look through their notes. I say, “Stop. Do not look at your notes. Take a minute to think about it yourself.” I tell them our brains are like a forest, and your memory is in there somewhere. You’re here, and the memory is over there. The more times you make a path to that memory, the better the path is, so that the next time you need the memory, it’s going to be easier to find it. But as soon as you get your notes out, you have short-circuited the path. You are not exploring for the path anymore, someone has told you the way.
At other times, I pose a question and have students write three possible answers on the board. They vote by raising fingers, then find someone with a different answer and figure out who is correct. This transforms how they see their own learning. When students trip over an exam question, they’ll commonly accuse the test of containing trick questions. But now they come to me after a disappointing exam and say, “I have the illusion (错觉) of knowing. How do I get better ”
24. Why are the students shocked by the author’s comment on their textbooks
A.They consider the teacher too critical.
B.They find their study method questioned.
C.They regard reading as effective learning.
D.They view highlighting as a waste of time.
25. What problem do many students face
A.They depend on frequent tests.
B.They lack self-testing skills.
C.They spend little time in reading.
D.They object to page marking.
26. What does the author mean by comparing the brain to a forest
A.Memory disappears without regular use.
B.Memories exist in fixed locations.
C.Memory training means making paths.
D.Note consultation helps recall.
27. What do students’ words imply in paragraph 4
A.They are disappointed at the exam result.
B.They regret not testing themselves earlier.
C.They prefer solving problems independently.
D.They are ready to improve their learning methods.

People in the US throw away at least 17 million tons of textiles (纺织品) every year—about 100 pounds of clothing per person. At the same time, unsold blouses, jackets, and other fashion-industry leftovers end up in landfills (垃圾填埋场) such as the one in Chile’s Atacama Desert, so vast as to be visible from space. Many of these items are fast fashion—made quickly, sold cheaply, and in style for too short a time because the industry relies on novelty to keep consumers buying.
Every year the global fashion industry gives off up to 10 percent of the world’s greenhouse gas. Growing cotton involves large quantities of harmful chemicals, and coloring clothes pollutes rivers with dangerous waste. Man-made materials like nylon are made with fossil (化石) fuels and release microfibers with every wash.
To address these problems, it’s time to build a recycling system in fashion — one that reuses clothes, cloth and threads, recycles whenever possible and encourages producers and sellers to choose textiles and processes that minimize the use of raw resources such as cotton.
As awareness increases, many people are donating to or buying from second-hand stores or, when they shop new, looking for “certified organic” labels. Consumers should be aware that they can prod authorities and brands to take action by deciding which brands to support. Under such pressure, many companies are trying to figure out how to remain profitable while producing less and ensuring that what they do make does less harm to people and the planet. Consumers and companies alone can’t solve such a vast ecological and climate problem, however. Last year California rolled out an extended producer responsibility (EPR) law for textiles, which requires brands with more than $ 1 million in global sales to pay for reuse, repair or recycling of their products.
“We are watching closely,” says Rachel Van Metre Kibbe, founder and CEO of advisory firm Circular Services Group. “What I have in mind is a recycling economy, which begins with designing products for lasting use rather than quick replacement.”
28. Why do people throw away so many clothes each year
A.Many items are cheaply sold.
B.Fashion trends change quickly.
C.Most clothes are poorly made.
D.People tend to follow the crowd.
29. What does the fashion recycling system advocate doing
A.Cutting the share of fast fashion.
B.Making better use of existing resources.
C.Lowering prices for used clothes.
D.Limiting the need for processed products.
30. What does the underlined word “prod” in paragraph 4 mean
A.Urge.
B.Support.
C.Follow.
D.Accept.
31. What does Rachel value in products
A.Low costs.
B.Attractive designs.
C.Long-term use.
D.Regular replacement.

People’s views are becoming increasingly polarized, with social bubbles (茧房) deepening existing beliefs and widening opinion gaps. This polarization doesn’t just apply to political opinions; it also touches on factual topics, from climate change to disease prevention. According to a recent study, people use search engines in ways that confirm their existing beliefs, potentially expanding polarization. A simple adjustment to search algorithms (算法), the researchers propose, could help deliver a broader range of perspectives.
Online participants were asked to rate their beliefs on six topics, such as nuclear energy and the health effects of caffeine. They then chose search terms to learn more about each topic. The researchers rated the terms’ scope (范围) and found that between 9 and 34 percent were “narrow”. For example, when researching the health effects of caffeine, one participant used “caffeine negative effects” while others used “benefits of caffeine”. These narrow terms tended to match participants’ existing beliefs, and generally fewer than 10 percent did this knowingly.
“Search algorithms are designed to give the most relevant answers for whatever we type, which ends up strengthening what we already thought,” says Eugina Leung from Tulane University, who led the study. Similar results appeared when participants used ChatGPT. When researchers randomly assigned participants to view different results, they found that the results affected people’s opinions and even behavior. For example, participants who saw results about “caffeine (咖啡因) health benefits”, rather than “risks”, were more likely to choose a caffeinated drink afterward.
Pointing out biases in the search terms had only a small effect on people’s final opinions. However, changing the search algorithm to provide broader results helped reduce the effects of narrow searches. “People are able to bring in different perspectives when they’re exposed to them, which is encouraging,” Leung says. The researchers recommend applying such strategies, possibly as “search broadly” buttons. “This would be really helpful,” Leung says, but whether it will ever happen “is hard to predict.”
32. What phenomenon does the author point out in paragraph 1
A.Search engines create social bubbles.
B.Public debates on factual topics become heated.
C.Opinions are increasingly divided on political issues.
D.Search habits are unknowingly expanding opinion gaps.
33. What is the feature of “narrow” search terms
A.They involve broader ideas.
B.They follow social trends.
C.They match popular beliefs.
D.They strengthen established views.
34. What can we learn from the example given in paragraph 3
A.Caffeine benefits people’s health.
B.ChatGPT provides objective information.
C.Search results may influence users’ choices.
D.Online searches reflect personal interests.
35. What is the researchers’ suggestion about
A.Approaches to broadening search results.
B.Choice of new research methods.
C.Techniques for identifying search biases.
D.Necessity to involve more participants.

Deep in a small and peaceful village called Willowbrook, between wide sunflower fields and quiet woods, lived a boy named Thomas. He loved exploring the woods around the village more than anything, always looking for new paths, interesting stones, or hidden spots.
Thomas met Sebastian one day during his exploration. He was walking through the woods when he saw a boy sitting on a fallen tree by the stream. It was Sebastian, who was deeply absorbed in a book—he loved reading so much that he often borrowed books from the village library and lost himself in the wonderful stories inside. Thomas greeted him warmly, and they soon got to know each other. The stream side became their favorite meeting place, where Thomas would take Sebastian to explore new parts of the woods, and Sebastian would sometimes read interesting stories to Thomas. Day by day, their friendship grew, and they even built a secret hideout in a tree trunk, making it their little adventure base.
However, before the annual village fair, a serious situation arose when Sebastian was informed by the kind village librarian who had always encouraged his reading that the library’s rare and valuable books would be sold unless enough money could be raised during the fair. Hearing this, Sebastian felt extremely worried, because those books had accompanied him through many happy days.
Thomas had been excitedly preparing for the kite-flying competition for months. He had made his kite carefully and dreamed of winning first prize, which meant a lot to him. As it happened, the village was alive with excitement on the big day. Colourful stands lined the streets, music filled the air, and everyone was in high spirits. Thomas watched the beautiful kites flying high in the blue sky, but he also saw Sebastian working hard at the donation stand, enthusiastically asking for support for the library. His eyes moved between the colorful kites floating in the skies and the modest donation stand where Sebastian obviously needed help.

第二节 范文
Thomas was torn, caught between his personal desire and the support for his friend. He stared at his handmade kite for a while and made up his mind. He walked straight to Sebastian’s stand and put his competition prize money into the donation box. Then he helped Sebastian introduce the library’s precious old books to passers-by. Many villagers were moved by their friendship and donated money generously. Though he missed the kite contest, Thomas felt warm inside.
When the day ended, the librarian announced that they had saved the books. Sebastian jumped with joy and gave Thomas a tight hug. The librarian thanked them sincerely and promised to hold more reading activities for kids. Later, the two boys returned to their tree hideout, talking happily about the library’s bright future. Thomas realized true friendship meant putting friends’ needs before his own little dreams.
