Chinese chess
Chinese chess, also called Xiangqi, is a famous two-player game in China. It has been played for more than 2, 000 years. The game is fun and shows Chinese ways of thinking. Each player has 16 pieces in either red or black, like two armies fighting each other. The key is to catch the other player’s King, the most important piece.
The board (棋盘) of Chinese chess is special. It has nine lines across and ten lines up and down, with a river in the middle. The river stops some pieces, like the elephant, which cannot cross it. Every piece has its own way of moving. The horse moves in an “L” shape, but if any other piece is in its way, it can’t move forward. The chariot moves straight, and the cannon can jump over one piece to take another. The soldiers can only move one step each time and can walk to the left or the right after crossing the river. The guards protect the King inside the palace. If the King is caught, the game ends.
Today, Chinese chess is famous not only in China but also in other countries. Many people enjoy playing it because it helps them think better and solve problems. You can find people playing Chinese chess in parks or online. It is a game that is both fun and meaningful for all ages.

Scientists have been studying an iceberg called A23a for many years. It was once the largest iceberg in the world, but now it has completely broken up in the Southern Ocean. A23a lost about 99 percent of its area and was less than 50 square kilometers in April 2026.
Antarctica is covered with thick ice and snow. Over time, snow builds up and forms large moving rivers of ice, called “glaciers (冰川)”. These glaciers move slowly toward the sea and form large ice shelves near the sea. Sometimes huge blocks of ice calve from ice shelves and fall into the sea. In this way, new icebergs are created, just like A23a in 1986.
In 1986, A23a broke away from the Filchner Ice Shelf. At that time, it was about 4,170 square kilometers in size. For over 30 years, A23a was stuck in the Weddell Sea. In 2020, it finally broke free and began moving to the north. As it moved into warmer waters, the iceberg slowly started to melt (融化) and break into smaller pieces. In January 2026, its main part was around 503 square kilometers.
Now A23a is too small to keep its name as an iceberg. However, its breakup has already had a great influence on the ocean environment and shipping safety.
46. How large was A23a in April 2026
A.Less than 50 square kilometers.
B.More than 99 square kilometers.

The 2026 Beijing E-Town Half Marathon for people and human-like robots took place on April 19. It started in 2025, and this was the second race. As the world’s first famous half marathon for human-like robots, it has become an important global place to test and improve robot technologies.
A robot named Lightning (Shandian) from the Honor Company created a miracle. It finished the 21.0975-kilometer race in just 50 minutes and 26 seconds. This amazing time is even faster than the human world record of 57 minutes and 20 seconds.
This is a huge improvement from last year’s first robot race. In 2025, the fastest robot took 2 hours and 40 minutes to finish. Most robots couldn’t even finish. This year, several robots ran faster than professional runners. Nearly 40% of the robots could run on their own without a remote control. The race tested their speed, balance, and intelligence.
The audiences were impressed. Sun Zhigang said, “This is the first time robots have beaten humans. I never imagined that. Robots might bring new possibilities.” However, there were small problems.
