Dear Sun Meng,
In your last email, you asked me how to deal with stress and worries. One good way that many students in my country find helpful is using a worry box. Let me explain how to make and use one.
Try using a worry box Make a special box Use colourful things and pictures to make your worry box. Here is a picture of my worry-eating monster (怪兽) box! Write down your worries. Take some pieces of paper and write down your worries. Rate (评价) your worries and store them in the box. If you like, place each worry on a scale (等级) from 1 to 10. 1 means“a little worried” and 10 means “the most worried”. For example, today I put two worries into the box. I rated “losing my new bike” as a 7 and “worrying about the maths exam” as a 4. Talk it out. Make sure to make some time every day or week to talk about your worries with your parents. Together, you can find ways to deal with them.
Remember, it’s not healthy to carry worries around in your head. The worry box provides a safe place to “share” your worries. By using it, you’ll learn to deal with your worries.
Take care!
Yours,
Anna

Deyu wangquan, one of my favorite Chinese idioms (习语), means “catch the fish and then forget the net”. It comes from Zhuangzi, and the meaning of it is that you don’t show your thanks to others after getting help from them.
When I studied this idiom in the United States, I read traditional (传统的) Chinese characters (汉字). The character for “fish” has four dots (点) at the bottom. But when today’s Chinese students study this idiom, they read simplified (简化的) characters. Now the character for “fish” only has a line at the bottom, which is easier to write. In fact, most Chinese people use simplified characters now.
However, some Chinese fear that if students overuse (过度使用) simplified Chinese characters, it may cause some cultural treasures to be lost. They suggest that schools should teach traditional characters. But the fact is that Chinese is already among the most difficult languages to read and write. To save time, perhaps students will still learn and use simplified characters. At the same time, traditional Chinese characters are valuable and should stay, too. You need to take some time to learn about them and the stories behind. In this way, you will help pass down Chinese culture and also have some fun.
62. Which kind of person can be described by the idiom deyu wangquan
A.Linda, who is warm-hearted and always ready to help others.
B.Cindy, who always forgets things and makes everything a mess.
C.John, who is interested in fishing but not very good at it.
D.Bob, who is successful but not thankful to those who helped him.
63. Which of the following is the traditional character for “fish” mentioned in the passage
64. Which of the following is wrong
A.Some Chinese are worried students may overuse simplified Chinese characters.
B.Chinese is already among the most difficult languages to read and write.
C.To save time, perhaps students will still learn and use simplified characters.
D.It’s not necessary for us to learn about traditional Chinese characters.
65. What is the main idea of the passage
A.Chinese history.
B.Chinese idioms.
C.Chinese characters.
D.Chinese teachers.

California had bad wildfires in Southern California in January 2025. Strong winds and dry conditions caused the fires. They spread fast and changed quickly, putting many communities in danger. To protect people and their homes, Governor Gavin Newsom said that over 7,500 firefighters and emergency workers were sent to fight the fires.
The state government did a lot to help with the problem. Governor Newsom made a special rule to support communities affected (影响) by the fires that are still happening. He also said the state was in a state of emergency to make rescue (营救) work faster. The government got help from the federal government to support the work of dealing with the fires, including support for fighting three big fires: the Hurst, Eaton, and Palisades fires.
California used all the resources they had for the fight. Local fire departments, state offices, and federal teams worked closely together. Other states also gave help: Oregon sent 75 fire engines, Washington sent 45, and smaller numbers were sent from New Mexico, Utah, and Idaho. This brought hundreds more firefighters. Before the strong winds came, the state’s emergency office had already put 65 fire engines, 7 helicopters, and over 105 special workers in dangerous places. CAL FIRE, the state’s forest fire department, sent over 4,700 workers, 31 helicopters, and more than 1,000 fire engines. Four shelters were opened to give safe places to live and basic things for about 500 people.
“We are trying our best to protect our communities,” said Governor Gavin Newsom. For more information on staying safe during emergencies, people could visit the official web page: ready.ca.gov.

Science and technology are developing at lightning speed. Here are four new inventions that are making a difference right now.
Quantum (量子) Computers: Nowadays, new quantum computers are getting powerful (强大的) and more trusted. They could change how we do things. For example, they are great at solving math problems that would take common computers a super long time.
Generative AI: It is Artificial Intelligence that can create things. It is becoming really good at making text and pictures. Tools like ERNIE Bot can produce text that looks like it is written by humans and pictures that look very real.
Clean Energy: We’re finding new ways to use the sun, wind, and other kinds of clean energy. For example, solar panels (太阳能电池板) are collecting energy from the sun to power homes and wind machines are turning the wind into electricity. These green energy choices are not just getting better, but they’re also becoming cheaper.
CRISPR: CRISPR is like a cool science tool that scientists use (使用) to edit (编辑) DNA inside living things. Imagine DNA as a book with instructions for everything that makes up a plant, an animal, or even you and me. Sometimes, there are mistakes in the instructions, and that’s where CRISPR comes in to fix those mistakes. This can help us in many ways, like making people healthier and growing better fruit and vegetables.

Are kids too young to volunteer 11-year-old American girl Josephine Lavoie shows us that kids can make a difference to the lives of others.
Five years ago, Josephine started volunteering by organizing an activity. She collected toys and sent them to kids in a children’s hospital. From then on, Josephine began to look for ways to help others. She organized beach or waterway clean-up activities. She also made cards for the old people in the old people’s homes to cheer them up, she even started a little free library in her town.
Josephine gets her ideas of volunteering from things she learns and people she meets. One recent idea came from her friends. “I have a few friends from foster homes (收养所),” she said.
“Foster kids often don’t have much. So I collected clothes, school things and books and put them in nice bags. In this way, the kids will have both new things and bags.” Josephine gave the filled bags to at least 400 foster kids. “Although we are young, we need to give back to the world. Dear Jake,
Summer vacation is coming soon. It is the best time for us to read books. I have read and kept many books from childhood. Among them, my favourite book is The Adventures of Tom Sawyer. It is written by Mark Twain.
The book is about a smart boy, Tom Sawyer and his unusual childhood. He takes some unbelievable adventures with his friends. However, he doesn't fear in the face of difficulties.
I got this book on my 7th birthday and I have had it for seven years. It is special to me because it's my birthday gift from my dear father. What's more, I like it because I learnt a lot from Tom Sawyer. I will keep the book forever.
Yours,
Li Hua
