He goes everywhere by bicycle, and he uses a phone that only receives incoming calls. He has solar-powered showers, and uses toothpaste that he makes himself from natural materials. When he needs clothes, he gets them for free from charity bins. Mark, who keeps a daily blog on a solar-powered laptop (笔记本电脑), does small jobs on a farm in return for free Wi-Fi access.

①A major rainstorm had been warned about for several days. Finally one afternoon, it came suddenly. Melanie had just returned home from school when the sky got unusually dark and the wind began to blow hard. She hurried to shut the windows to keep the rain from pouring in. Luckily, her parents got home from work before the weather turned terribly bad.
②Then, all of a sudden, the skies opened up. The rain poured down as if someone had overturned a huge bucket of water. It beat heavily against the roofs and rushed down the streets. It made a loud drumbeat on the window and ran like a river down driveways. It was raining so heavily that Melanie could hardly see through the windows, but she could clearly hear the wind screaming. It blew the tree branches around.
③Before long, the wind rose from a low sound to a loud cry. Then, the power went out. For a moment, everyone sat quietly. Melanie felt her way to the kitchen for flashlights. Her father got lanterns and her mother pulled some blankets from the closet. They sat comfortably in the living room, waiting for the storm to pass.
④After a while, Melanie’s family were hungry. They took flashlights to the kitchen and found potato chips and cookies. They ate sandwiches in the living room and told scary stories to calm down. Finally, everyone fell asleep.

Artificial intelligence (AI) is very useful in daily life. We use digital assistants like Alexa and Siri at home. Doctors even use AI to help find diseases like cancer early. However, not everyone is happy about a new AI invention: a digital actress named Tilly. Although Tilly has not been in any famous movies yet, her creators believe she could be a star. This raises questions. Can something that is not real show real human feelings Can it look believable on screen Many people doubt (质疑) this. There are also worries that AI actors might take jobs away from real actors. Movies and TV shows cost a lot to make. Using AI actors could save companies money because they don’t have to pay huge money to Hollywood stars. With lower costs, companies could make more films. Also, AI actors can do things real actors cannot. They can perform dangerous work without getting hurt. They never get sick, so filming is easier. Directors can change an AI actor’s face or voice to fit any role perfectly. For historical movies, an AI actor could look exactly like a real person from history. AI is powerful technology, and many people want to see what it can do. Just because we can use AI doesn’t mean we should. Real actors have natural talent and work very hard to improve. They could lose their jobs to computer programs. It is also unfair to real actors. Unions like SAG-AFTRA say AI is trained using the work of real performers without asking for permission or paying them. Furthermore, AI actors often look strange and unnatural. Knowing they have no real feelings can feel strange. This might destroy the fun of watching a movie.
12. What doubt do people have about Tilly
A.Whether she can show true human feelings.
B.Whether she will get hurt when making movies.
C.Whether her creators will stop developing her soon.
D.Whether she will get along with other actors in movies.
13. Which of the following are advantages of AI actors according to the “Yes” part
①Saving money for film production.
②Having fewer limits for filmmakers.
③Getting sick and needing a break.
④Looking exactly like certain characters.
A.①②③
B.①②④
C.①③④
D.②③④
14. Which group of people would mostly choose “NO”
A.Young movie fans.
B.Film company bosses.
C.Professional film actors.
D.Historical movie directors.
15. Which of the following best describes the structure of the passage
A.Cause-Effect-Prediction.
B.Question-Answer-Example.
C.Problem-Solution-Conclusion.
D.Introduction-Arguments-Open question.

Being conscientious (尽责的) isn’t always easy but it’s a great life skill to develop.
Have you ever heard someone being described as conscientious Conscientiousness is a skill or quality. Experts have found that conscientious people are more likely to do well in their work and have good relationships with others. 16
Know what conscientious means.
Being conscientious means wanting to do your work or duty well. You try your best and don’t give up when things get hard. You also do tasks without being asked. 17 For example, a conscientious person follows rules, does homework early and carefully, stays with difficult tasks, and helps others without being told.
18
Sticking to tasks when they get hard is a key part of being conscientious. Child expert Laura Gwilt says, “Sticking with things doesn’t mean working non-stop. It means finding ways to keep moving forward, even one small step at a time.” When things get hard, try not to stop. Gwilt adds, “When you continue instead of giving up, you show yourself that effort matters as much as the result. Mistakes are a normal part of learning. Each time you finish something challenging, you feel proud, and that builds confidence.”
Make plans and keep them.
Another step to be more conscientious is to keep your plans. If you plan to go to a new club or do your homework after school, make it happen. 19 Following through shows others that they can trust and depend on you—important skills as you grow up.
A.That is why it is a very important quality to develop.
B.Stick with tasks when they get hard.
C.There are many clear behaviors (行为) of a conscientious person.
D.It means you will keep your promise and finish what you start.
E.Learn from your mistakes bravely.
