Liang Kaiyu, a 30-year-old engineer, lived a happy life with his family before an accident.
As an engineer, he loved building things in his free time. When he saw that a foreign engineer had developed an e-bike, he decided to build one himself. It took him more than a year to finally make it, but he still tried hard to make it as good as it could be. But one mistake during the work cost him his left leg.
After being in hospital for more than 20 days, he went back home and was ready for the real test—life without his left leg. Going through the darkness was difficult for him. “It is my wife and my two sons who keep telling me not to give up,” Liang said.
About two months after the accident, he got his prosthetic limb (假肢). And on the 100th day, he could walk with it. What’s more, he used his engineering skills to make it more comfortable and stronger than a real leg.
On the Internet, Liang saw many people ride bikes, dance and even ski by using their prosthetic limbs. A mental health hospital in Chengdu welcomes two dogs to work with psychological assistance therapy (心理辅助治疗).
The dogs are part of the animals-assisted therapy (AAT) in the treatment project for depressed (抑郁的) people. According to Chen Jiajia, who works with the hospital, “AAT is a useful method for treating depression, and it helps a lot in treatment projects”. The two dogs, “Lidabao” and “Xuegao”, once worked in hospitals for children.
Chen said that earlier in January, a depressed boy called Jack, who didn’t talk to anyone and even tried to kill himself, took part in the project. When they met for the first time, the dogs seemed to feel Jack’s depression and sat next to him quietly. Jack couldn’t hide his surprise, and later shared his story about himself and his own pet.
Staying with the dogs helped Jack a lot. Then the boy became better and left the hospital with a new feeling of hope.
