Math is everywhere in our daily life. But where exactly does math work The following examples show how math helps in different fields.
Traffic Solutions
How do we set traffic lights to avoid traffic jams Traffic engineers use math models called traffic flow models. They think about the number of cars, crosswalks, time of day, and special events. With these models, engineers can find the best timings for traffic lights. Researchers are also working to make these models better to stop traffic jams more effectively.
Literature
UK mathematician Sarah says that the number “three” is special in Western literature and languages. Three sticks can make a triangle, the most basic stable shape, which gives a feeling of strength and completeness. That is why many common English phrases have three words, such as “ready, set, go.” Some nursery rhymes repeat a word three times, like “row, row, row your boat.” Stories often have three main characters, such as Harry, Ron, and Hermione in the Harry Potter series. Many book series have three books instead of four.
Weather Forecasting
As we learn more about nature, we see that math can explain it. Math plays an important part in weather forecasting. Every day, big computers process thousands of data points from Earth, including air pressure, water levels, temperature, and wind speed. These data points are numbers. Using different math methods, the computers study the numbers to understand the state of the atmosphere and predict weather around the world.

One night when they were near Treasure Island, Jim wanted an apple from the large barrel (桶) on the deck. There were only a few apples left, so he climbed inside the barrel and sat in the dark, eating. Suddenly somebody sat down beside the barrel. Jim was going to jump out but he heard Long John Silver speaking.
“Flint was the captain,” said Long John Silver, “and I was like him. The cannon (大炮) took away my leg and blinded old Pew as well. But we came home with a ship full of gold. I always did well with Flint. Most of his men are with me.”
“Well, I’m with you, too, John,” answered a young voice. It was Dick, the youngest sailor on board.
Jim understood immediately that most of the ship’s crew (船员) were pirates. They planned to take the treasure. And now the new boy Dick was one of them, too.
“I told you that Dick was a good boy,” said another voice. It was Israel Hands, another sailor and a good friend of Long John Silver.
“But how long are we going to wait ”
“Well, we can kill them now,” said Long John Silver.
“Or we can do it on the island, when treasure is safely on the ship. Or we can wait until Captain Smollett has set the course for home, because none of us know how to do that.”
Jim jumped out of the barrel as no one was looking, and ran over to Dr Livesey. He found a chance to tell the doctor, the captain and the squire (乡绅) everything.
“It’s strange,” said the captain, “This crew seems fine. Listen, this is what I think: first, we must go on, because if we turn back now, the crew will fight against us immediately; second, we have time to think of a plan until we find the treasure; third, there are still some honest men on our side. We have your servants, Mr Trelawney, and ourselves, so that is seven out of twenty-six.”
Jim began to feel worried. There were only seven honest sailors out of twenty-six.

Although the 2026 Shanghai International Flower Show ended on May 10, one popular artwork continues to bring joy to people. In Suhewan Central Green Space, a 5.2-meter plant sculpture of a dog, nicknamed the “scruffy puppy (潦草小狗),” has won people’s hearts. Its soft and messy look gives it a relaxed charm, making it a popular place for spring photos.
Unlike traditional tidy displays, this sculpture’s natural style connects well with visitors. Many office workers say its tired look reminds them of their own feelings after a busy day. The public successfully asked for a longer display, and local officers said the puppy will stay for at least three more months.
As summer heat arrives, the plant sculpture needs special care. Workers will tidy up its shape and change some leaves in late May or June to help it get through the hot season.
The puppy’s popularity shows a change in Shanghai’s flower show. It has turned into a citywide celebration that brings riversides, shopping areas, parks, and neighborhoods together. By putting art in daily places, organizers let people enjoy beauty naturally while walking or shopping. This ability to mix art with daily life helps both locals and tourists. According to local feedback, if people do not visit in time, they will lose the chance to enjoy the joy.
