What is a wild island Great question! It is a piece of land with water all around. People do not change these islands much. They are natural and wild. Animals are usually the kings and queens here. But how do these islands rise in the ocean And how do animals get there
Many wild, faraway islands come from volcanoes (火山). When an underwater volcano erupts (喷发) again and again, it makes a big rock mountain. Finally, the mountain comes out of the water. These islands are just the tops of volcanoes!
Soon, living things start to arrive. Birds fly there. Good swimmers like turtles swim to the island. Crabs come when they are small babies, carried by ocean water. Some land animals float on plants. Small animals also “take a ride” on birds. Insects can come too. Imagine being blown more than 1,000 kilometres to an island! Spiders (蜘蛛) fly by letting out silk threads (线) that catch the wind. What an adventure!
In November 1963, something amazing happened near Iceland. A volcano under the sea erupted for more than three years. It made a new island called Surtsey! Life came faster than people thought. The volcano was still erupting when the first plant grew in 1965. It was a plant called sea rocket, brought by the waves. In the early 1980s, black-backed gulls (海鸥) came to the island. They made a lot of noise, and they pooed (排便), just like all birds. Their poo carried many seeds. Soon, many new plants grew. Wind and waves helped too, but seabirds were the best “gardeners” on the island.
29.What does “it” refer to in Paragraph 2
A. The sea water. B. The rising of an island.
C. The erupting of a volcano. D. The underwater volcano.
30.The writer introduces how living things arrive by ________.
A. listing numbers B. sharing ideas C. giving examples D. telling stories
31.Why were seabirds the best gardeners on Surtsey
A. Because they took good care of the plants.
B. Because they spread the seeds with their poo.
C. Because they ate the insects among the plants.
D. Because they brought wave water to the island.

José’s teacher, Ms. Gomez, stood up three dominoes (多米诺), one next to the other. José knew what she was going to do. He and his sister had stood up lines of dominoes like that. José knew what would happen next.
Ms. Gomez tapped (轻敲) the first domino. It fell and hit the second domino. It fell. That domino hit the last one. Then they were all down.
“This is cause and effect (因果关系),” said Ms. Gomez. “One thing makes another thing happen. Now I want you to imagine something. Think of the first domino as a rainstorm. What happens when it rains ”
“The plants are watered,” Jemma answered.
“Exactly right,” said Ms. Gomez. “That’s the second domino. What happens when the plants are watered ”
Michael raised his hand. “They grow leaves and flowers,” he said.
“That’s the third domino,” Ms. Gomez replied. Then she drew pictures on the board and asked the students to talk about the connection (联系) of the events. “The flower came out because it took in the rain from the rainstorm,” José answered.
“Yes,” said Ms. Gomez. “This is cause and effect. It will help you to see how things that happen go together.”
Mike raised his hand. “The ball rolled into the street. It caused the postman to fall off the bike.”
“That is a good example,” their teacher said. “Can you think of one more ”
“How about the two characters, Sondra and Mr. Sims, knowing each other ” asked Meg.
“That is different,” Ms. Gomez said. The class wondered why. “That is a coincidence (巧合).”
“A what ” José asked.
“A coincidence. That’s when things happen at the same time by accident. The events may seem to be connected. However, they really are not,” Ms. Gomez explained.
“Can you please give us a real-life example ” asked Jamal.
“Sure,” said Ms. Gomez. “You leave your house without your umbrella. Rain starts to fall. You think ‘If I had my umbrella, it wouldn’t have rained.’ Really, your not having an umbrella and it raining have nothing to do with each other. What’s another example of a coincidence ”
“__________” Sheila said.
“That’s a good one,” said Ms. Gomez. “Now this is your homework. Write about a cause-and-effect relationship and a coincidence from your life.”
