Twelve-year-old Hayden Roland from Montana has always had a special connection with animals. At home, he cares for two dogs, two rabbits, and two potbellied pigs. Some of them were meant to be temporary fosters (临时寄养) but ended up staying.
His great enthusiasm for animals drove him to act beyond his home. In February of the previous year, he founded Wagging Tails, a youth volunteer group based at the Maclean-Cameron Animal Adoption (领养) Center in Great Falls, Montana. The group recently celebrated its first anniversary (周年) of helping animals in need.
In the United States, nearly 6 million cats and dogs entered shelters (收容所) and rescue facilities in 2024. According to Shelter Animals Count, a national database, most of those animals were then adopted into new homes. Volk has known Hayden for years. Hayden has donated his birthday money to the center and done volunteer work there. In 2022, at the center's annual Fur Ball Philanthropy Award, Volk presented him with the Youth Philanthropy Award. So when Hayden wanted to start Wagging Tails and use the center as its home base, Volk was all in. "How do you make a difference You find something you're really interested in, " Volk says.
The group began with just Hayden and two friends. Now it has grown to 32 members who meet monthly after school. They do the cleaning, store pet food, and walk dogs. Last winter, they built straw-lined beds for stray cats and placed them around town to offer warmth and shelter.
"They just impress me, because they truly are out there, " says Aria Roland, Hayden's mom, who's on the center's board of trustees. "They are not scared to put their ideas out there. They're not scared to get involved. They impress me, and they give me hope for the future of animals. "

An African baobab tree has burst into blossom (开花) at the Eden Project in Cornwall, England, and experts believe this is the first time it has ever happened in the UK. Known by the scientific name Adansonia digitata, a baobab can live for more than 3, 000 years. For most of the year it has no leaves or flowers — its branches look like bare (光秃秃的) roots reaching into the sky, which is why it is also called the "upside-down tree".
In their native Africa, these remarkable trees can survive long droughts because they can store water in their huge trunks, which can grow more than 10 metres across. That's as wide as a tennis court. However, these ancient giants are under threat. Their flowers and fruit are in high demand as a superfood because they are full of nutritious vitamins and minerals. A serving of baobab fruit contains more calcium than the same amount of milk and three times as much vitamin C as oranges. However, these trees grow extremely slowly, so new trees cannot quickly replace those that are cut down, or grow more flowers and fruit to replace what is harvested.
The Eden Project's baobab tree was collected as a seed from Malawi in the project's Rainforest Biome (生物群系) in 2000. The tree, which now is almost as tall as a three-storey house, is about 27 years old. The biome is meant to copy a rainforest environment, with the temperature reaching up to 35°C, for wild baobabs grow in dry and hot conditions. The flowering tree is one of five baobabs at the project.
The blossoming baobab has had two flowers, with lots of buds promising more flowers in the coming weeks. The flowers hang upside down, with large white petals (花瓣).
