It was 22:21 p.m. on a cold winter night and I reached the stop after riding for 10 minutes, just in time to catch the last bus. As I showed my QR code, the driver nodded to me and said, “You again You always get home this late.”
I was surprised that he remembered me, but perhaps it wasn’t so surprising. I often took the last bus. Some nights, I was the only passenger the whole way.
“Yeah, I’ve been really busy with my work recently,” I said.
“What do you do ”
“An editor (编辑),” I replied.
“Oh, my friend is an editor, too. It’s a tiring job, isn’t it ”
“It sure is. There’s a lot to take care of before it’s printed. Driving seems less tiring. You can enjoy the landscape along the way, can’t you ”
“Landscape ” the driver laughed. “Imagine driving the same way 16 times a day. For everyone’s safety, you must pay attention to the road. And on night work, I never get home until 1 am.”
“Oh! It’s freezing this late in the season!” I said.
“It is,” the driver agreed. “But I love my job. When I was a kid, I dreamed of driving a bus. It makes me feel proud to get everyone to their destination safely!”
“I know the feeling,” I said. “Our articles are learned by thousands of children. I’m proud of my work, too.”

Can you imagine that a fish talks to you As we know, fish often swim silently in the water. However, recent research by Aaron Rice, a scientist at the Cornell Lab of Ornithology, has shown that fish can talk! Rice and his team found that many fish use sounds to communicate (交流), just like we use our voices to talk with each other.
Rice’s research has shown that fish have their language and can communicate with each other in many different ways. This communication is important to fish because it helps them share important information. Fish use different sounds for different reasons. For example, some fish use sounds to warn of danger—if a fish senses danger, it can warn other fish by making a special sound. And they can use a different sound to find other fish of their kind.
Rice’s team found that one kind of fish can make a loud sound by contracting muscles (收缩肌肉) around their swim bladders (鱼鳔). Another kind of fish that Rice studied can use their swim bladders to make a sound that is comparable to a human voice. Some scientists think that they can make that sound by rubbing (摩擦) their swim bladders together.
Now, thanks to Rice’s research, we understand more about fish and their amazing abilities. And here also comes the question: Is there something else—something more secret about fish communication that we don’t know about
26. What did Aaron Rice find in his research

Helping brings light to our lives
As we all know, helping each other is important in our daily life. Last Monday on my way to school, I saw an old grandma fall down on the road. I ran to help her stand up and sent her home safely. She thanked me again and again. Though I was a little late for class, I felt warm inside. Small kindness can bring great warmth to others. I realize giving others a hand makes our life full of light.
