Most people agree that honesty is a good thing. Many kinds of birds are very successful at fooling other animals. For example, a bird called the plover sometimes pretends (假装) to be hurt in order to protect its young. Birds called cuckoos have found a way to have babies without doing much work. How They don’t make nests. Instead, they get into other birds’ nests secretly. Then they lay their eggs and fly away. When the baby birds come out, their adoptive parents feed them.
Chimpanzees, also called chimps, can be sneaky (狡诈的) as well. After a fight, the losing chimp will put out its hand to the other chimp. Jin Hongjun is a tree healer who has devoted (奉献) his life to saving ancient trees in China. Twenty years ago, he helped rescue a 4,500-year-old cypress tree, known as the “General Cypress (将军柏)”, in Dengfeng, Henan Province. This tree is very special because it was given a title by Emperor Wu of the Han Dynasty over 2,000 years ago.
The General Cypress was in bad shape because of years of poor care. Under the guidance of a tree expert, Jin and his team worked hard to save it. They removed rotten parts, cleaned it, made it stronger and improved the soil around it. It was a big job because they had to dig out lots of old stone slabs and replace the soil.
Taking care of ancient trees is a continuous job. Jin went on to protect many other old trees. He led the protection work of 878 ancient trees in “The Centre of Heaven and Earth” of Dengfeng. The centre was on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2010. He even worked through a fever and spent nights in a tent to get the job done.
Jin faced many challenges, like digging through hard clay by hand and stopping tourists from burning incense near the trees. He explains that these ancient cypresses grow very slowly, and some might be even older than people think.
Jin is now a national expert on tree protection and has helped over 20,000 ancient trees across China.
