时文阅读理解1 计算机先驱Grace Murray Hopper(2026原创)
Grace Murray Hopper was an important figure in the early years of computer development. Her work strongly influenced the technology we use today. During World War Ⅱ, she supported the US Navy by doing secret calculations on the IBM Mark Ⅰ, one of the first electromechanical computers in the country.
Hopper was born in 1906 in New York. She studied mathematics at Yale University and received advanced degrees while also teaching at Vassar College. After the attack on Pearl Harbour, she decided to join the Navy because she wanted to serve her country. However, she was first refused because she was too small and older than many new officers. Hopper did not give up, and she later received special permission to join the Naval Reserve. She was then sent to Harvard to work on computer research.
Hopper soon became a leading figure in computer science. She created the first compiler, a tool that changed mathematical instructions into language that computers could understand. She also suggested using everyday English words in programmes instead of symbols. This idea helped her team develop the first word-based programming language, making computers easier for more people to use.
Later, Hopper returned to help organize and standardize many of the Navy’s computer programmes. During her life, she received more than 40 honorary degrees and major awards such as the Presidential Medal of Freedom and the National Medal of Technology.

Zhou Lei is a researcher at the Hubei Academy of Agricultural (农业的) Sciences. He won the China Youth May Fourth Medal. He also has made great progress in the improvement of rice over the years. So far he has bred (培育) 16 new kinds of rice, increasing grain production by more than 1.5 billion kilograms. This makes sure China has enough grain to feed its people.
Zhou has been offered chances to go abroad and exchange experience with others. One of the visits to the United States made Zhou realize that even though China was playing a leading role in rice research in the world, its agricultural industry was still behind other developed countries. After returning to China, Zhou began using his skills to help the country in agriculture. Instead of staying in an air-conditioned office, Zhou spent most of his time in the field. Breeding is hard, as it is heavily affected by sunlight and temperature. So Zhou always took care of his crops 24 hours a day.
Things don’t always run smoothly. In August, southern China experienced very high temperatures. This had a serious influence on the crops in Zhou’s field. However, Zhou never got downhearted. Zhou believed it opened a window for him to do further study. He said, “Sometimes we just need to find ways to overcome high temperatures, and this also helps us choose the rice.”
After going through tens of thousands of tries, Zhou and his team succeeded in creating new kinds of rice to meet the needs of people.
