Brush in Hand, Beauty in Mind
To enrich students’ after-school life and help them appreciate the beauty of traditional Chinese culture, our school held a Chinese painting experience activity themed “Brush in Hand, Beauty in Mind” last week.

M: Diana, how did you first become interested in creating paintings on buildings
W: Well, I read a story in a magazine about a guy who added art to buildings, making it possible to see art without having to go to an exhibition. Just recently, I saw a documentary about the same guy.
M: So where did you create your first painting on a wall
W: Most of my paintings so far have been in schools, but the first one was actually in a hospital. The one I’m most pleased with is in a station, though.
M: Wow! Is there a color you like to use more than any others
W: Well, dark blue’s no good, and paintings with too much green can be a bit boring. Yellow’s perfect, so I use plenty of that.
M: Great. You’ve painted in lots of different cities now.
W: Yeah. I particularly enjoy painting in New York, but people in Mexico City seem to really like my works, so I paint things there more than anywhere else. One day, I’d really like to create something in Paris — it’s a fantastic city.

Bird-watching is my hobby. It’s a great way to enjoy the natural world and appreciate some of the most fascinating creatures on the planet. I know a few bird-watchers who enjoy watching butterflies at the same time, but I don’t do that very often because there are only a few species in this town. My telescope gives good views of birds, but it’s not always easy to identify all the birds I see. I have a field guide at home for reference. I start with the obvious features such as size and color. Some more experienced birdwatchers can recognize the songs and calls birds produce. I can gain lots of clues from observing their behaviors. That’s often the deciding factor. Birds can be found everywhere. If you want to see some really unusual birds, visit the wetlands. Then there are forests — though the birds tend to hide themselves in the trees. For me, I frequently walk along the beaches to see different species. Bird-watching is always a challenge with no guarantees of what you may encounter. So you need a bit of good fortune to see what you are desperate to see.
