Each country has many good people who help to take care of others. For example, some high school and college students in the United States often spend many hours as volunteers in hospitals, orphanages (孤儿院) or homes for the old. They read books to the people in these places, or they just visit them and play games with them or listen to their problems.
Other young volunteers go and work in the homes of people who are sick or old. They paint, clean up, or repair their houses or do their shopping. For boys who no longer have fathers, there is an organization called Big Brothers. College students and other men take them to baseball games or on fishing trips and help them to get to know things that boys usually learn from their fathers. Each city has a number of clubs where boys and girls can go to play games or learn skills. Some of these clubs show movies or organize short trips to the mountains, the beaches, museums or other places of interest. Most of these clubs use a lot of high school and college students as volunteers because they are young enough to remember the problems of younger boys and girls. Bottle gourd pyrography (葫芦烙画) is an art of burning pictures on the surface of the gourds (葫芦). The skill known as pyrography dates back more than 2,200 years ago to the Qin Dynasty.
The gourd has long been considered to bring good luck, because in Chinese the word for “gourd” sounds like the words for “blessing and wealth”. It was often used to store food, ladle water or hold water when people went out. Its shape made it a perfect tool in the past. In ancient times, many doctors used it to hold medicine and hung it in front of their clinics (诊所).
Skilled artists can turn common gourds into artworks. The first step is to pick a golden gourd. Then the artist draws a creative picture on the gourd. Finally, he usually takes advantage of (利用) the natural shape of the gourd, burning the pictures with electric category pens. This is the most difficult step. If there is any mistake in this step, all the work will go back to the beginning.
Zheng Xiaoliang from Anhui has been working on the gourd art for more than 40 years. “The gourd pyrography is difficult with a pyrography brush to create a wonderful picture and it requires skills in painting,” Zheng said. “If you want to learn this kind of art, you need to...”
46. What does the underlined word “it” in Paragraph 2 refer to
A.The medicine. B.The bottle gourd. C.The clinic. D.The picture.
47. Which step might be the most difficult to finish a gourd pyrography
A.Picking. B.Drawing. C.Burning. D.Copying.

A.The future of the bottle gourd pyrography.

C.How to spread the bottle gourd pyrography.

During the last summer vacation, I went to Qingdao, Shandong Province, with my parents and my sister. We went there by high-speed train. It took us only three hours and a half to get there because the train ran very fast. It could run about 250 kilometers an hour.

On the third day, it was rainy. We went to the Qingdao Museum by taxi. We learned about the local (当地的) history and culture there. It was the last stop, but it was my favorite part of the trip.
We stayed in a clean and tidy hotel when we were in Qingdao. Its price wasn’t high. It was close to the night market. After a day’s activities, we went to the market to have seafood. It was really delicious!

It was March 2023. I was finishing off high school. While I was looking forward to my college years, I also felt a strong wish to volunteer abroad. So I took a gap year (间隔年) and went to volunteer in South Africa. I took part in the Child Care Project. We worked in a foster care home and spent time with a group of orphans (孤儿) between the ages of 0 and 3. There was nothing as exciting as seeing a baby taking her first steps, hearing a two-year-old girl repeat all of the letters in the alphabet after I said them, seeing a little boy kick or catch balls of different sizes, and watching all of the kids carefully wash their hands as it became a habit. These were the skills that I watched the children develop during my time there. My heart was filled with pride. I also took part in the Teaching Project and worked in a preschool. Teaching was more tiring. Some children were naughty. They didn't always listen to me. But it's hard to describe the joy I felt when the kids finally understood what I was trying to teach them. Volunteering in South Africa changed my life. It changed who I am as a person. I cannot be more thankful for this amazing experience.
