It was a Christmas night. I was an unlucky nurse who had to work on such a beautiful festival. When I was so tired that I didn’t want to work any longer, three people came to my desk—a tired woman and two children. “Are you all sick ” I asked. “Yes,” the woman answered and lowered her head.
But when they started to tell their problems, things became unclear. One child had a fever, but his temperature was OK. The other child had an earache, but she could not tell me which ear hurt. It seemed that the mother was trying to cough.
Something was wrong. But I only explained that it might take a while (需要一段时间) before a doctor could meet them. “Take your time, please,” said the mother. I checked their information-no address. Suddenly I knew, they were homeless (无家可归) and the hospital was warm.
The family stayed together under the Christmas tree, smiling and talking with each other sweetly. Quietly, I went back to the nurses’ station and told them what happened in the waiting room. It was just like the God sending us a gift on Christmas Day. The nurses’ station suddenly came back to life. All the nurses went into action for “a Christmas emergency (急诊).” We took out our meals for our Christmas “sick people”. We also put oranges and apples together as presents.

When planning for your future, are you more interested in getting a job or having a career (事业) There is a difference between the two. A job is something that will provide you with money. A career, however, is perhaps more satisfying because you will be able to follow your interests.
Zhong Fangrong, from a poor family in Hunan, is now a Beijing University student. She was once faced with this choice. Many people advised her to study economics (经济学) or business. A degree in these subjects would lead to a good job and good pay. It would make her be able to help her poor parents. But Zhong has decided to study archaeology (考古学). She wants to choose a career that she is fond of.
Making a lot of money is good. However, I think being happy in your work is even better. Money, as it is said, can’t buy happiness, so it makes no sense to spend your life doing work that makes you unhappy.
If you are not sure about your future work, you should ask your parents and teachers for advice. You should also look for role models. In Zhong’s case, it is the famous archaeologist Fan Jinshi. Fan has studied the Mogao Caves in Dunhuang for more than fifty years. When Zhong wrote to Fan about her interest in archaeology, Fan replied with some advice. I think all of you should follow it: “Don’t forget your dreams. Keep them alive and focus on your studies.

A.Developing a great career. B.Studying economics or business.

A.The influence of role models is powerful.
B.An archaeologist’s work is hard and boring.
C.Studies are important, so we should work hard.

C.The difference between a job and a career is huge.
D.Choosing a career can be a very difficult decision.

No matter what kinds of dangers he met, he always tried his best to fight against them. This story teaches me to be brave and never give up when facing difficulties.
