I saw an old man lying on the floor. His hands and feet were tied up. There were two men standing beside him. One of them held a lantern, and the other held a gun.
The man on the floor kept begging, “Please! I won’t tell anyone!”
Each time he said that, the man with the lantern smiled evilly and said, “Indeed, you won’t have any chance to tell anyone!”

I quickly ran away and hid behind some boxes. After that, the two men stood by the deck (甲板) railing and talked.
“Let’s just put the stolen things in our boat and leave,” the man with the lantern said. “Soon, this steamboat will be washed back into the river and sink (沉没). When that happens, old Jim Turner inside will surely die in the water.”

“And then what, Huck ”
“What do you think We’ll get back on the raft (木筏) and sail away from here.”
Jim gave a big sigh and said, “We can’t, Huck. The raft is gone. It came loose and sailed away by itself. We’re stuck here.”

①Have you ever seen photos of students holding their middle school English textbooks at famous landmarks around the world Recently, a warm and creative trend (趋势) called the “Chinese Textbook Relay (接力)” has become popular online. It started with young Chinese people sharing photos of their textbooks at the exact places shown on the covers, and it has quickly spread across the globe.
②The trend first began in London. A Chinese overseas student took her English textbook, which had Big Ben on the cover, to the real landmark. She invited other Chinese visitors to take photos there, write their true feelings in the book, and pass it on. Soon, similar activities appeared at the Pyramids, the Sydney Opera House, and the Roman Colosseum. This simple idea quickly won the hearts of young people.
③Why has this trend become so popular For Chinese teenagers, textbooks are often their first “window to the world”. Many grew up reading about these faraway places in books, but never thought they would see them in person. Standing at these landmarks with the textbook turns childhood dreams into reality. It is more than just a fun activity; it is a special coming-of-age journey.
④This relay also shows the quiet pride of today’s Chinese youth. They see the world with calmness and equality, and share their gentle warmth with people around them. For overseas students, the textbooks are not just study tools. They act as emotional ties, helping them feel less homesick and even connecting them with strangers in foreign countries. Besides, the activity reminds people of the true meaning of learning: connecting book knowledge with real-life experience.
⑤As more people join the relay, the books travel further and collect more stories. Each photo, each note, and each shared moment carries the sincerity of Chinese young people. This trend is not just about taking photos. It is a way to bring textbook knowledge to life, build cultural confidence, and spread warm, youthful energy across the world.

44. What does Paragraph 4 mainly tell us

Kurtz is the manager of Rust Belt Riders in Cleveland, Ohio. His company started a project of composting (制作堆肥) with waste food. Its goal is to fight against climate change by recycling food waste.
“If we want to meet the climate goals that have been set by our leaders and scientists, we’re going to have to deal with food waste, which is a huge part of the problem of climate change,” Kurtz said.
Wasted food usually ends up in landfills. As it breaks down, it creates a gas called methane (甲烷). Methane traps heat in the atmosphere, which makes climate worse.
Every day, Kurtz connects with grocery stores, restaurants, and other food-service businesses. He educates them about the harmful effects of food waste. Then he asks if they’re willing to change the way they deal with their extra food. So far, Rust Belt Riders has called on 300 companies and 2,800 families to do something different with their food waste. With seven trucks and 30 workers, the company picks up their clients’ extra food, composts it and turns it into soil.
Composted soil is much more than just dirt. It consists of (由……组成) five ingredients that help plants grow. That’s why Kurtz and his workmates sell the composted soil to people and businesses that need it, which has become a second service at Rust Belt Riders.
In addition to partnering with businesses and families, Rust Belt Riders has teamed up with local schools. At Dentzler Elementary, Rust Belt Riders helps the kitchen staff compost its leftover food. The students place their food waste into bins during lunch periods. The bins are then collected by Rust Belt Riders. “This program has created a space for all students to become environmental caretakers in their own cafeteria,” Emily Cass, a farm-to-school coordinator (协调员) at Dentzler says, “when they might not have other opportunity to help with climate change.”
