The Mogao Caves in Dunhuang, China, are like a magic art museum hidden in the desert. They sit right on the ancient Silk Road. For more than 1,000 years, these caves have kept beautiful paintings and sculptures. They tell stories about ancient China's culture, ideas, and daily life.
In 1900, a significant discovery surprised the whole world. More than 60,000 important things were found in a small cave. In 1987, UNESCO(联合国教科文组织) named the Mogao Caves a World Heritage Site. The murals(壁画) there show everything from ancient music performances to how people dressed.“They' re like a time machine.” says Fan Jinshi, a Dunhuang expert(专家).
To protect the easy-to-break artworks, teams from the Dunhuang Study Centre scan(扫描) the wall paintings. They also restore the murals with the latest technology! Up to now, they have turned 295 caves into digital versions(数字版本) and repaired many broken artworks. The“Digital Dunhuang” project even lets foreign people visit the caves online!
Dunhuang's success has encouraged teamwork around the world. At a recent meeting, experts from India,Cambodia, and France spoke highly of China's ways. A foreign expert said,“We want to learn from China to save our own treasures.”
