When it rains heavily, we can say, “It’s raining cats and dogs.” Well, on 29 December, 2021, the people in Texarkana, the US were experiencing the animal rain. It was raining fish.
On that day, a storm hit the place. The storm left a lot of small fish on the ground. “Fish falling from the sky is an example of the animal rain,” explained the city experts. “Although it’s not common, it can happen in certain weather if the fish are light enough.”
In fact, there have been similar reports of such strange weather throughout history. In 2017, people in California saw fish fall from the clouds over a primary school. In 1921, frogs fell from the sky over a city in Canada. Fish have also fallen from the sky at least three times in the last 30 years in Lajamanu, Australia.
Of course, the animals were not in the sky before it started raining but powerful waterspouts(水龙卷) swept them up. Waterspouts are tornadoes that form or travel over open water. The fast wind inside them lifts water up into the clouds. At the same time, some light fish or frogs are lifted up too. The wind carries the animals and water over the land. When the energy of the wind starts to fall, so do the animals and water. As a result, it “rains” animals.

Natural disasters like earthquakes, floods and typhoons can happen suddenly. They may destroy houses and hurt people. So it’s very important to learn some safety tips to protect ourselves.
When an earthquake happens, if you are indoors, don’t panic. Hide under a strong table or desk right away. Cover your head and neck with your hands to keep safe from falling objects. Stay away from windows, tall furniture and lifts. If you are outdoors, move to an open place quickly, such as a playground. Stay away from tall buildings, trees and power lines.
If you meet a flood, you must move to higher ground at once. Don’t walk or drive through floodwater. Even water that looks shallow may be deeper than you think. The fast-moving water can easily carry you or your car away.
Typhoons often bring strong winds and heavy rain. During a typhoon, stay indoors and close all the windows and doors. Don’t go outside, especially near the sea or rivers. If you are outside, find a safe shelter and wait for the typhoon to pass.

In August, 2022, Chongqing had a very hard time. The city suffered record-breaking heat, with the highest temperature above 40℃ for weeks. Because of the hot and dry weather, large forest fires swept through many parts of the city.
Firefighters worked hard to put out the fires, but they were not the only heroes. In Beibei District, a large number of motorcyclists (摩托车手) played an important role in fire control.
Li Xin is the owner of a motorcycle club in Beibei District. He organized a team of 15 club members as volunteers. They transported supplies for the firefighters in Xiema Town, the centre of the local fires. “It is my honour and duty to guard my hometown,” he said.
The team members took turns using nine motorcycles to carry food, water and whatever firefighters needed. They also helped transport firefighters to certain places.
There were hundreds of motorcyclists like Li. Most of them were in their twenties. They rode on the poor mountain roads and carried a large basket full of supplies on their back. Some fell and got hurt even though they had the best motorcycle skills. Some got heatstroke (中暑) after working long hours. They didn’t have much time for sleep, but they were in high spirits at all times.
Besides riding on the difficult roads, these motorcyclists also helped cut wood and put out fires. They stayed and helped till the fires were finally put out. Without them the fires couldn’t be put out so quickly.
