New Zealand (新西兰) is famous for sheep. People often say the number of sheep in the country is larger than that of people.
This is true! New Zealand is one of the few countries where sheep are more than humans. Up to June, 2024, there had been about 23. 6 million sheep and about 5. 3 million people. That means there were about 4. 5 sheep for each person.
In 1982, there were about 22 sheep for each person. At that time, farming sheep for meat and wool (羊毛) was very important to New Zealand’s economy (经济).
New Zealand is about the size of the UK, but it has far fewer people. This leaves plenty of space for sheep.
However, sheep numbers are dropping over the years. Wool prices are falling because many people now use synthetic fibres (合成纤维) instead of wool. Farmers are changing how they use their land and are focusing on things like dairy (乳品的) farming and forestry (林业) to make more money.
In 2022, there were fewer than five sheep per person, the lowest number ever.
Some farmers worry that New Zealand could lose its wool industry (工业) completely. The government is trying to help by encouraging people to use wool products, but farmers think this might not be enough.
Other countries, like Australia, also have more sheep than people. Their sheep numbers are falling too.
New Zealand and Sheep

Sheep population Up to June, 2024, each person has 46 sheep on average (平均)
