Sometimes, life puts us in very hard situations. We may lose almost everything or face something impossible. If so, what should we do Here are stories about two heroes.
Jingwei Tries to Fill up the Sea
Once upon a time, the youngest daughter of Emperor Yan went boating on the Eastern Sea. While she was enjoying herself, a strong wind rose on the sea, and her boat sank into the sea. Her spirit turned into a beautiful bird after she died. She cried sadly with the sound “Jingwei, Jingwei”. That was why people called her “Jingwei”. The bird lived on a mountain near the sea. She was so sad that she decided to fill up the sea. Every day, she flew between the mountain and the sea, carrying stones or branches from the mountain and dropping them into the sea. One day, the sea said to Jingwei, “Poor little bird, stop doing that meaningless thing. You’ll never fill me up.” Jingwei replied, “I’ll fill you up without doubt. I will, even if it will take me thousands of years. I’ll fight on without taking a rest.”

If you have ever swum in a swimming pool, you must have loved making waves by yourself. Unlike hard objects, water moves quite easily. The harder you push the water with your hands, the larger the waves become.
Now imagine what happens in the ocean when an earthquake happens underground. When a great earthquake happens under the ocean floor, it passes its large energy to the water. This creates water waves. We call them tsunamis.
Normal ocean waves are about 100 meters long and 2 meters high. But a tsunami can be 193 kilometers long or more. It travels up to 800 kilometers per hour in the deep ocean. At that time, its height may be only 0.9 meters. That makes it very hard to notice, even for a ship nearby.
When a tsunami comes near a coastline, it changes a lot. As it approaches shallow (浅的) water, its speed drops to below 80 kilometers per hour. The wavelength becomes much shorter, but the height of the wave becomes much greater. This creates a huge wall of water along the coastline and causes great damage to coastal areas.
About 80% of tsunamis happen in the Pacific Ocean. We can’t stop them, but the areas often hit by them have warning systems that can warn people along the coastline as early as possible.

Willing Hands, Willing Hearts
Helping people in need is a great virtue. Small warm acts can bring great warmth to others.
Last month, I saw an old grandma carrying heavy bags on the street. She walked slowly and looked tired. I ran to help her carry the things and walked her home. She thanked me again and again with a big smile.
From this experience, I learn that kindness doesn’t need big efforts. As long as we are ready to give a hand, our warm hearts will light up the world. Let’s take action and pass love around us.
