When we look up, we see soft, light clouds in the sky. But here’s something interesting: clouds are very heavy!
A normal cloud can be as heavy as 500,000 kilograms—that is as heavy as 100 elephants! So, why don’t they fall
down
The reason (理由) is what clouds are made of (组成的). A cloud isn’t one solid (固体的) thing. It is made of
lots and lots of very small water drops or small pieces of ice. Each of these drops is too small for our eyes to see.
Because they are so small and light, they fall through the air very, very slowly.
There’s another big reason. When something falls, the air around it pushes (推) up. We call this air resistance
(空气阻力). For small water drops, this push is strong enough to slow them down a lot. At the same time, warm air
moves up from the ground. This moving air, called an updraft, keeps pushing the little water drops up. So, because
the drops fall so slowly and the air keeps pushing them up, they can stay high in the sky.
All of this is part of the water cycle. When many small water drops in a cloud join together and become big
and heavy, they finally fall as rain or snow. This water returns to the land and rivers. Later, the sun warms the water,
and it turns into very small drops of water in the air, ready to form new clouds again. This wonderful cycle never
stops, giving us water and keeping our Earth full of life.
21. Why do the small water drops in a cloud fall very slowly
A. Because they are too small and light.
B. Because the sun is warming them up.
C. Because they are turning into clouds.
D. Because the air around them is very cold.
第 7页/共 12页
22. What does “air resistance” do to the small water drops
A. It makes them move down. B. It helps them join together.
C. It slows down their falling. D. It turns them into clouds.
23. What does the word “updraft” mean in the text
A. Moving air that goes up. B. Moving air that goes down.
C. Moving air that goes around. D. Moving air that stops falling.
24. ________ work together to keep clouds in the sky.
A. The warm sun and the cold air
B. The water cycle and the warm sun
C. The cloud’s light color and its big size
D. The fall of water drops and the push of the air
25. What is the main idea of the text
A. What clouds are made of. B. Why clouds stay in the sky.
C. How the water cycle works. D. How air changes small drops.

Guo Shanqiuyun made a big choice at 15—she went to study in the US. Eight years later, she made an even
bigger one: she came back to China and started her work in a village.
Different from her parents’ generation (一代人), who wanted to move to big cities or go abroad (出国), Guo
chose (choose 的过去式) to build her future in Tangjiazhuang, a beautiful village in Anhui. She thought there were
more chances (机会) in villages.
After Guo studied business and art in the US, she went to Tangjiazhuang with her father at the end of 2014.
The trip changed Guo’s life. She saw the village as a piece of “blank paper” and had an idea. She hoped to turn it
into a place with food, fun, and places to stay—bring in visitors and better the lives of the people in the village. She
began by turning old houses into coffee shops and homestays.
Her hard work paid off. In 2023, the village got 897,000 yuan and over 30,000 visitors came—30% more than
the year before.
Guo is one of many young Chinese who return from abroad after their studies to follow their goals. With
China growing fast, more and more students who studied abroad are coming back to help their hometowns become
better and more beautiful.

Hello, everyone. Our school held a theme activity called “Unity and Cooperation, Striving Together” on June
5th.
First, we watched an exciting basketball match video. We learned that a team wins not only by skills but by
united hearts. Then we acted on this great idea: we made lovely group blackboard newspapers. We shared ideas,
drew pictures and wrote articles, each doing our own part and helping teammates around us.
This activity told us teamwork matters most. Mutual support and trust bring much better results. We’ll keep
this warm spirit in our future study and life.
