My Volunteer Weekend
Last weekend, I joined the school volunteer group and spent two busy but meaningful days
helping people around our neighborhood. Our teacher told us that small warm actions could bring

On Saturday morning, we went to the old people’s home at seven thirty. When we arrived,

fruit skins and waste paper everywhere on the road. We brought gloves and big rubbish bags. We
worked together for three hours, and the street became clean and tidy again. We also put up ten
posters on the street walls to tell people not to throw rubbish everywhere. Many passers-by stopped
to watch us and praised our good behavior.
When I got home on Sunday evening, I was very tired, but my heart was full of joy. I learned
that volunteering is not only about giving help to others, but also letting us learn life lessons we
cannot get from textbooks. I decide to take part in volunteer activities once a month from now on,

How to Keep Healthy as Middle School Students
Health is the most important thing for teenagers, but many seventh graders don’t have good
living habits these days. They stay up late to play mobile games, eat lots of junk food and seldom
do sports. These bad habits bring many health problems, such as headaches, weak bodies and bad
eyesight. Here are four useful ways for us to keep healthy in daily life.
First, keep a regular sleep time. Students between twelve and fourteen years old need at least
nine hours of sleep every night. If you go to bed after eleven o’clock, your brain cannot get enough
rest. You will feel sleepy in class and cannot listen to teachers carefully. You should put down your
phone one hour before sleeping, and read simple storybooks to relax yourself. Never play exciting
games at night, because they will make your brain excited and hard to fall asleep.
Second, have healthy eating habits. Breakfast is the most important meal of a day, but lots of
students skip breakfast to buy snacks on the way to school. This is very bad for your stomach. You
need to eat eggs, milk and fruit for breakfast to get enough energy for morning classes. At noon and
dinner, eat more vegetables and less fried food like French fries and fried chicken. Drink warm
water every day, and stop drinking cola or sweet juice with too much sugar. Too much sugar will
make you fat and cause tooth problems.
Third, take exercise every day. You don’t need to do difficult sports for a long time. You can
walk or ride bikes to school instead of taking cars. After school, play ball games with your
classmates for thirty minutes, such as basketball, badminton or running. Doing sports can make
your body strong and help you sleep better at night. If you stay at home all day without moving, you
will easily feel tired when you walk for a short time.
Fourth, stay happy every day. Bad feelings are also bad for your health. When you feel upset
or worried about your study or friends, talk with your parents, teachers or best friends. Don’t keep
all your sad feelings in your heart. You can also listen to soft music or take a walk alone to relax
your mood. A happy heart always brings a healthy body.
If you follow these four rules every day, you will have a strong body and full energy to study
and enjoy your school life.

Traditional Chinese Festival: Qingming Festival
Qingming Festival, also called Tomb-Sweeping Day, is one of the most important traditional
Chinese festivals. It usually comes on April 4th or 5th every year. The festival has a history of more
than 2,500 years, and it has two main meanings: to honor ancestors and to welcome the warm
spring.
On Qingming Festival morning, most Chinese families go to the tombs of their family
members. They bring paper flowers, fresh fruit and wine to the hills. First, they clean the grass and
dirt around the tombs to show their love and missing for dead relatives. Then they put fruit and
wine in front of the tombs, burn paper money and bow three times. This activity is called tomb
sweeping. It lets young kids know where their family comes from and teaches them to respect their
ancestors.

After finishing tomb sweeping, families usually take a spring outing together. At this time of
year, the weather becomes warm, trees turn green and all kinds of flowers bloom everywhere.
People walk in the mountains or parks, fly kites and have picnics on the grass. Old people say
flying kites on Qingming can take bad luck away from people’s lives. Kids love this part most,
because they can run and play outside with their cousins without much homework.
There is also special traditional food for Qingming Festival: green rice cakes (Qingtuan).
People make them with glutinous rice and green wild vegetable juice, so they look green and taste
soft with sweet bean filling. Many families make Qingtuan at home together the day before the
festival, and they share the cakes with neighbors and friends.
Nowadays, more young people work in big cities far away from their hometowns. They cannot
go back home to sweep tombs every year, so they use online tomb-sweeping ways to show their
missing for ancestors. They send virtual flowers and write warm words on online pages. This new
way is also accepted by most Chinese people, because the true love for family is the most important
part of the festival, no matter which way you choose.

A Special Gift from My Foreign Friend
I have a foreign friend called Anna. She is a fourteen-year-old girl from Australia, and she
studies in our school for one year as an exchange student. We become close friends after she came
to my class last September, and we share almost everything with each other every day.
Last month was my thirteenth birthday. Before my birthday, Anna asked me many questions
about Chinese birthday traditions. I told her that in China, families usually eat long noodles on
birthdays, which mean long life, and parents buy birthday cakes for kids to share with friends. Anna
wrote all these things down in her notebook carefully, and I didn’t think much about it at that time.
On my birthday afternoon, after the last class, Anna stopped me at the school gate and gave me
a big paper bag. I opened it and found two special gifts inside. The first gift was a hand-painted
notebook. On the cover, she drew a picture of me and her playing basketball on the school
playground, and there were many warm sentences on every page. She wrote down our interesting
stories together, such as the time I taught her to make dumplings and the day she helped me with
my English pronunciation. I was so surprised because she spent almost two weeks drawing and
