A Warm Summer in Mountain Village
Last summer vacation, I took part in a volunteer teaching program in a remote mountain
village in Guizhou. I stayed there for thirty days with eleven other student volunteers from different
cities. Before we set off, our teacher told us that the village school had only three classrooms and
第 2页共 12页
very few teaching supplies, so we prepared storybooks, colored pens, sports balls and new
notebooks for the local kids.
When we arrived at the village at noon on July 5th, dozens of children stood at the village gate
waiting for us. Their simple faces were full of curiosity and joy. The headmaster of the school
welcomed us warmly and showed us our living rooms—small simple rooms with wooden beds and
old desks, but they were clean and tidy.
We divided our teaching tasks into different subjects. I was responsible for English and art
classes. Most kids there had never learned English before, so I started with simple daily words like
apple, sun and friend. In art class, I taught them to draw mountains, rivers and their lovely farm
animals. A little girl named Xiao Hong impressed me most. She was quiet and shy at first, but she
drew the most beautiful picture of her grandma’s orange orchard. She gave the painting to me as a
gift on my last day.
Besides classes, we helped the villagers do farm work after school every afternoon. We
watered vegetable fields, picked corn and fed chickens with the children. Every evening, all
villagers would invite us to their homes for home-cooked meals. They cooked fresh tofu, wild
vegetables and sweet potato porridge for us, and told us old stories about the mountain village under
the big banyan tree.
On the last day of our volunteer program, all students held a small performance for us. They
sang folk songs, danced and recited poems they wrote themselves. When I said goodbye to Xiao
Hong, she held my hand tightly and cried. She promised me that she would study hard and visit me
in my city when she grew up.
Back home in the city, I often look at Xiao Hong’s painting and think about that unforgettable
summer. This volunteer experience taught me that happiness does not come from expensive toys or
delicious food. Helping others and bringing warmth to people in need is the most valuable treasure
in life. I decide to join the volunteer teaching program again next summer.

Why Enough Sleep Matters for Teenagers
Sleep is necessary for human health, but a recent survey shows that over seventy percent of
middle school students in China do not get enough sleep every night. Most eighth graders go to bed
after 11 p.m. and get up before 6:30 a.m., which means their sleeping time is less than seven hours
every day. Doctors say teenagers aged 13 to 15 need at least nine hours of sleep to keep healthy
both physically and mentally.
There are three main reasons for students’ lack of sleep. First, heavy school homework takes
up most of their spare time. Many students have to finish math exercises, English articles and
Chinese diaries after dinner, and they can’t finish all tasks until late at night. Second, electronic
products influence their rest. Some students play mobile games or watch short videos for hours after
finishing homework. The bright screen light makes their brains stay excited, so they can’t fall
asleep quickly even when they lie in bed. Third, some students have after-school training classes on
weekdays, leaving almost no free time for relaxation.
Short sleeping time brings lots of serious problems to teenagers. To begin with, students will
feel sleepy and tired during daytime classes. They can’t focus on teachers’ lessons, so their study
grades will drop slowly. Secondly, lack of sleep weakens teenagers’ immune system. They will
easily catch colds, have headaches or stomachaches. What’s more, bad sleep habits influence
teenagers’ moods. Students who sleep less are easier to get angry, worried or sad when they meet
small troubles.
第 4页共 12页
Here are three practical suggestions for students to improve their sleep quality. First, make a
daily time plan. Finish homework as early as possible and stop all study tasks before 10 p.m.
Second, stay away from phones and tablets one hour before bedtime. You can read light storybooks
or listen to soft piano music to relax your mind. Third, keep a fixed sleeping time every day, even
on weekends. Don’t stay up late or get up too late during holidays, or your body clock will be
broken.
Health is the foundation of study and growth. Every student should take sleep seriously and
form good rest habits from now on. Only with enough high-quality sleep can we keep energetic and
face all challenges in school life.

Bamboo: Special Treasure of Chinese Culture
第 5页共 12页
Bamboo is everywhere in Chinese traditional culture, and it has been loved by Chinese people
for more than two thousand years. Unlike most plants, bamboo grows fast and can live through cold
winters without withering. Ancient Chinese scholars saw noble spirits in bamboo: it stands straight
upward, is hollow inside and bends but never breaks in strong wind. These features stand for
honesty, modesty and strong willpower.
In ancient China, people used bamboo to make all kinds of daily tools and artworks. Farmers
wove bamboo baskets, mats and chopsticks for daily use. Artists made bamboo flutes that produce
soft and beautiful music. Writers and painters loved bamboo most. They wrote poems and drew
bamboo paintings to express their personal characters. The famous poet Su Dongpo once said, “I
can live without meat, but I cannot live without bamboo.” It shows how deeply ancient literati
admired bamboo.
Nowadays, bamboo still plays an important role in modern Chinese life. Environmental
workers use bamboo to make eco-friendly paper and tableware, which can reduce plastic pollution.
Many craftsmen open bamboo handcraft workshops to teach teenagers traditional weaving skills.
Every spring, many cities hold bamboo culture festivals. Visitors can watch bamboo art shows,
learn to make bamboo toys and taste special bamboo shoot food. These activities help young people
know more about traditional bamboo culture.
Bamboo also carries deep meaning in Chinese festivals and gifts. When visiting friends or
elders, people send small bamboo crafts as gifts to wish them a smooth and strong life. During
Spring Festival, families put bamboo paintings on their walls to bring good luck and peace to the
whole family.
As a symbol of Chinese spirit, bamboo connects ancient traditions with modern life. It reminds
every Chinese person to stay modest, brave and upright no matter what difficulties they meet.
Schools also set up bamboo culture courses to let teenagers inherit this precious cultural treasure
from our ancestors.

My Australian Pen Pal: A Bridge Between Two Cultures
Two years ago, my English teacher set up an international pen pal program for our class, and I
matched with a 14-year-old Australian girl named Chloe. At first, I worried that we had too many
cultural differences to communicate well, but after two years of writing emails and making short
video calls, we have become the closest foreign friends.
Chloe lives in a small coastal town in Sydney with her parents and her little brother Leo. Her
father is a marine biologist, and her mother works as a primary school art teacher. In her free time,
Chloe loves surfing, drawing watercolor paintings and reading Chinese history books. Before we
became pen pals, she had learned basic Chinese for one year at her school, so she can write simple
Chinese sentences in every email to me.
We share all daily little things with each other. I told Chloe about our Chinese school rules,
traditional festivals and my favorite ancient poems. I sent her paper cuttings, silk fans and sweet
osmanthus cakes as gifts. Chloe shared Australian school life with me: their school finishes classes
at 3 p.m., and students have lots of outdoor club activities every afternoon. She sent me beautiful
seashells and Australian native animal postcards. Last winter vacation, we made a one-hour video
call together. She showed me the blue sea near her home, and I took her to visit the Spring Festival
temple fair in my city through the screen.
We also discuss cultural differences and learn from each other. Chloe was surprised that
Chinese families always have big reunion dinners during Spring Festival. I felt curious about
Australia’s special holiday called Australia Day. We promise to teach each other our native
第 7页共 12页
languages: I help her improve Chinese writing, and she corrects my English grammar mistakes
patiently every week.
Chloe plans to visit China with her family next summer. She wants to climb the Great Wall,
taste Sichuan hotpot and learn to make paper cutting with me. I also hope to travel to her coastal
town in the future and surf the sea with her. This cross-cultural friendship teaches me that distance
cannot stop true communication. Respecting different cultures and listening to each other can build
warm friendship no matter which country we come from.

Last autumn, our school held a meaningful “Low-carbon Life” speech competition. I decided
to take part in it, though I was terribly afraid of speaking loudly in front of lots of teachers and
students. My English teacher Ms. Wang encouraged me patiently and told me that practice makes

perfect. I spent nearly two weeks 41 my speech carefully every evening after I finished all my
homework.
At first, my speech only had short and simple sentences. I had few real-life examples to
support my ideas clearly. Ms. Wang helped me search for plenty of true low-carbon stories around
our daily life. She advised me to talk about small green daily actions 42 saving electricity, sorting
waste rubbish and choosing public buses instead of driving private cars. She also told me to use
natural body language to make my speech more attractive and moving.
Three days before the competition, I went to the school hall to practice alone after class. When
I stood on the high stage and looked at the quiet empty seats, my heart beat very fast. I suddenly 43
some key sentences and felt very upset. I lost confidence and even wanted to give up the whole
activity. Luckily, Ms. Wang found me and comforted me softly. She said nervousness was common
for every speaker, and I should believe my long-time 44 work these days.
On the competition day, eighteen students from different grades joined the activity. When it
was my turn, I breathed deeply and walked onto the stage slowly. My voice shook a little at the
beginning, but I soon calmed down. I talked about serious environmental pollution problems around
us, shared easy green habits for teenagers, and called on everyone to take 45 useful action to protect
our earth together.
When I finished my speech, all teachers and students clapped warmly for me. Soon the final
result came out and I won the second prize of the whole grade. I felt so proud and ran to thank my
teacher at once. She 46 and told me the prize was not the most important thing. The biggest 47 was
that I overcame my shyness and learned more about environmental protection.
From this special experience, I learned two valuable life lessons. The 48 one is never giving up
when you meet difficulties. Keep trying and you will make great progress little by little. The other
one is that we must try our best to 49 our beautiful home earth. Low-carbon life is not empty
slogans on posters, but small good habits we should 50 every single day.
After the speech competition, I set up a low-carbon club with my close classmates. We go to
the community to teach neighbours rubbish sorting every Sunday morning, and put up beautiful
environmental protection posters on the school walls. More and more students join our club step by
step. We all know small group efforts can become 51 great power and make our living world much
cleaner and warmer. We will keep doing these green activities and never stop these meaningful 52.
We also learn to save paper, turn off lights in time and walk to school on foot. These tiny
changes make our life greener. Everyone can be a green protector, and small kindness for the earth
can bring 53 surprises to our future life. I will keep this special lesson in my heart forever, and be a

The Power of Small Kindness
Small kindness may seem tiny, but it can bring great warmth to people’s hearts.
Last month, I fell down on my way to school and my textbooks spread all over the road. A
strange girl ran to help me pick up all books quickly. She smiled and told me to be careful, then left
before I could say thanks. Her small act made me moved the whole day.
From then on, I decide to pass kindness to others. I hold doors for strangers, help my
classmates with difficult homework and give food to stray animals after school.
I believe every small warm action counts. If everyone spreads a little kindness, our world will
become full of love and warmth.
