Nowadays, more and more teenagers take part in volunteer work during their holidays. I’m Li Mei, a Grade Eight student. Over the past two years, I have spent most of my summer vacations volunteering at the city animal shelter. I first got the idea after watching a documentary about stray dogs and cats. It broke my heart to see homeless animals wandering on streets, suffering from hunger and bad weather.
At first, I worried that I couldn’t do the work well. The shelter manager told me that I only needed to do simple jobs: cleaning animal houses, feeding small pets and walking dogs. On my first day, a weak little dog with a broken leg hid in the corner and refused to get close to anyone. Last month, our volunteer team raised money to build warm wooden houses for stray cats around the community. Some local shops donated pet food and blankets.
