A woman named Li Cuili from Henan Province drew attention during the year's Two Sessions in Beijing. She is a
village shopkeeper and her little store has an unusual name—— the Glimmer Library. Different from most village shops
which often sell daily supplies, Li has filled a whole wall with books. The small corner of the shop serves as a free reading
space for children. Over the years, she has also organized literacy classes(识字课) for women in the village.
The idea began in 2008. One day, a travelling song-and-dance group performed in the village. During the show, the
performers told a joke about a classic poem. In fact, it proved to be very rude. The children thought it was funny and
laughed loudly. Li did not laugh. Instead, she felt upset. She realized that the best way to clear weeds(杂草) from a waste
land was to plant crops(庄稼) there. After that, she cleared a shelf of her shop and filled it with books.
At first, few people paid attention to this reading corner. So Li began handing out candies to the children who
borrowed books. Soon children were running through the village shouting, “Books are sweet!” In the beginning, some
children just came for the candies. Slowly, they fell in love with reading. One little girl even read about 20 books during a
single summer holiday. Li asked her what she wanted to do when she grew up. The girl thought for a while and said, “I will
open a supermarket with many books so that people can read there.” That moment, Li felt a strong sense of achievement.
The girl's words made everything Li did worth it. Years later, that little girl even entered Zhengzhou University.
Today, XinHua Bookstore starts a “One-Square-Meter-Bookshelf” project based on Li's shop across the country. “This
one square meter of mine can really bring light somewhere else.” Li said.

Have you ever wondered how the waste is cleaned on Mount Qomolangma Many climbers leave lots of litter after
reaching the peak. Local Sherpas(夏尔巴人) used to take on the clean-up work alone.
The work is never easy and always put them in danger. Each Sherpa has to carry nearly 20 kg rubbish downhill by
themselves. They go on a 4 hours’ hike across the icy and risky roads to take waste back to the base camp. Together with
the Nepalese army, Sherpas have cleared up more than 100 tons of waste since 2019.
But now they get new help from two drones(无人机), which can complete the same journey in just six minutes and
take on most tiring cleaning-up work on the highest mountain. Drones are used to carry waste from Mount Qomolangma's
camp 1, which is6065 meters above sea level to the base camp, about 700 meters below. First the drones transport things
like ropes up to the peak. Then Sherpas hook(钩住) a bag full of rubbish on the drone for its return journey. During the
climbing season, the drones have dealt with more than 280 kg of waste. Using drones can not only speed up the process but
also reduce the danger for the Sherpas who carry waste down the mountain.
The waste problem of Qomolangma is worse at higher camps, which are more difficult to deal with. The government
in Nepal has also made strict rules: Each climber must carry back at least 8 kg of waste, or they will risk losing $ 4000 that
every climber must pay before climbing.
26. How does the writer start the passage
A. By asking a question. B. By telling a story.
C. By giving an example. D. By listing numbers.
27. What does the writer use the numbers in Paragraph 2 to show
A. The technology that the Sherpas use. B. The challenges that the Sherpas face.
C. The goal that the Sherpas must achieve. D. The difference that the Sherpas have made.
28. What is the main idea of Paragraph 3
A. Sherpas are still doing the clean-up work.
B. The government has made new rules about waste.
C. The waste problem on Qomolangma is getting worse.
D. Drones are making the clean-up work faster and safer.
29. What can we infer from the last paragraph
A. Climbers need to pay for the clean-up.
B. A climber with 10 kg of waste will lose money.
C. The government in Nepal cares about the environment.
D. The government has done nothing to keep the mountain clean.
30. What is the writer's purpose in writing the passage
A. To tell the story of the Sherpas.
B. To encourage care for the environment.
C. To list the rules for climbing the mountain.
D. To introduce new ways to clean the mountain.

Imagine this. You are lying on the bed and feel the bed starts to shake. The hanging light is shaking, too. Did a truck
just pass by Did something hit the house You may get confused. In fact, that's what an earthquake can feel like.
Earthquakes can bring lots of damage to the earth. They often happen near coasts or mountains. There are three
famous earthquake zones in the world— the Circum-Pacific Belt, the Alpine-Himalayan Belt and the Ocean-Ridge Belt.
Why do earthquakes happen To find out the reason, let's take a closer look at the surface of the earth. It seems like
one piece. But it is really made up of broken pieces called plates(板块 ). Plates are always moving slowly although we
cannot feel it. These underground movements can cause shock waves. They begin underground at a point called focus(震
源). Then shock waves travel through the ground in different directions. Some reach the surface and cause an earthquake.
The point directly above the focus is the epicenter(震中) where the quake is the most powerful. People don't feel the quake
as much if they are far away from it.
People in the past know little about earthquakes. Nowadays there are many scientists studying earthquakes. So it is
easier for us to know where it may happen. But it is still important to learn how to survive an earthquake. Here are some
practical life-saving skills.
●Keep away from windows.
●Cover your head with your arms to get protection.
●Hide under a strong table so that you can avoid falling things.
