Born in a village in Gansu province, Zhu Yanjun had never left his hometown in his early age. Some of his friends dropped out of middle school and worked in the city. Hearing about their exciting lives there, he did not go to high school and instead became a migrant (移民) worker.
For 30 years, Zhu had been a migrant worker in different cities. Although he only had a middle school education, his strong passion for reading never disappeared. The passion was inspired by his Chinese teacher in middle school who has published many articles in magazines.
“I also wanted to publish stories”, he said to himself. So he started to read. No matter where he worked, he went to local bookstores regularly with a notebook in order to write down wonderful paragraphs and memorize them. In this way, he got to know the history, traditions and landscapes of different places. Over the years, he has read thousands of poems and can recite over 1,000 of them. When reading poems from the Tang Dynasty and poems written by Chairman Mao Zedong, he appreciated the beauty of their language. He said, “One can get inspired to have a rich spiritual world and powerful mind from reading.” Whenever he faces any challenge, he thinks of Chairman Mao’s words: “Nothing in the world is difficult for one who sets his mind to it.”
In 2023, he finally appeared in the Chinese Poetry Competition hosted by CCTV and won the second place, impressing the audience deeply with his good performance. The local government decided to hire him as a staff member at the cultural center. Although his income is less than before, this job gives him more time to explore poems. Besides, he has more opportunities to share his study experience with others and inspire more people around to explore the beauty of reading.

According to a study published by the American Psychological Association, playing an instrument (乐器) as a child keeps the mind sharper as we age.
The study, done at the University of Kansas Medical Center, elected 70 healthy adults between the ages 60 and 83, who were divided into groups based on their levels of musical experience. The musicians performed better in several cognitive (认知的) tests than individuals who had never studied an instrument or learned how to read music. The brain functions measured by the tests tend to go worse with age.
“Musical activity throughout life may serve as a challenging cognitive exercise, making your brain fitter and more capable of meeting the challenges of aging,” said lead researcher Brenda Hanna Pladdy. “Since studying an instrument requires years of practice and learning, it may create connections in the brain that could make up for cognitive drop as we get older.”
“Music-making is connected to a number of health benefits for older adults “said Suzanne Hanser, chair of the music treatment department at the Berklee College of Music in Boston. “Research shows that making music can lower blood pressure, slow heart rate, reduce stress, and ease anxiety. There is also increasing evidence that making music enhances the immunological (免疫) response, which enables us to fight disease,” Hanser said. Hanser said that anyone, without considering age or ability, can make music and benefit from it.
“People are not only living longer these days; they want to remain healthy and active for as long as possible,” said Antoinette Follett, editor-in-chief of “Making Music” magazine. “Plus, there is an increasing focus in the medical community on the need to keep the brain as healthy as the body. This focus is as much about making the empty nest and retirement years fun and worthwhile as it is about preventing debilitating dementias (衰弱性痴呆) such as Alzheimer’s disease. Music making is able to do both.”

Since the early to mid-2010s, social media apps have made a permanent home in many people’s phones and spending time on social media has become as much of a daily activity as eating food or drinking water. Since so many people — especially kids, teens, and young adults — are on it for much of their days, there is a major concern over what social media is doing to people with its overwhelming (巨大的) information. Many argue that social media is an unhealthy way to pass the time, and false information from online is causing panic (恐慌) and confusion.
While social media may sometimes be linked to negativity, it is not as bad as many make it out to be. In fact, it has given birth to a whole new way to advocate (倡议；支持) for important movements, and it’s easy to spread one’s message to reach a large audience. For example, the Black Lives Matter movement started with online advocacy and it eventually reached practically everyone around the world during the civil rights movement over the summer in 2020. Activists online can create informational fliers, post resources to further educate people on any given topic, and communicate with like-minded people that want to help as well within a matter of minutes without even having to leave the house.
Honieh Hemati, a social activist, agrees that social media can be extremely helpful. “It can be really educational and inspirational. Sometimes it can open your eyes to a new perspective (视角) you wouldn’t have seen yourself,” she explained.
It is unjust to demonize (使妖魔化) social media, when it seems that most issues around social media are user errors, like anyone complaining there are too many people voicing opinions they don’t agree with, or being addicted to social media. It really is up to the individual — how they think of social media, and how they make use of it. People who have any grasp on reality wouldn’t spend every waking second on the phone, and they are responsible for what they post online.
